Call to Arms

We live such charmed lives here on the South Coast surrounded by beauty with so many opportunities to share and express our creativity that when something dark and ugly rears its head we are shocked into silence. Don't let this be one of those times. Aleta McGee, long-time honcho of the UVAA has had serious trouble strike her family. Her words tell the story better than I could hope to so read her explanation and then find a way to offer some sort of support and understanding for her and her family.

Aleta has worked trielessly for the artists of the South Coast for many years and now it is time for us to return the favor. For those of us who have benefited from her skill and devotion to duty and for those who have just enjoyed her guiding force at UVAA, dig deep and get moving. There is something you can do if nothing more than a card or email of support.

From the South Coast Trawler to Aleta and all of her family, good fortune, high hopes and secure wishes that all will be as it should. We are with you and wish only the best for your and your daughter..

From Aleta's desk...

Sweet Art Family -

You all know me well, I am not one to be silent! It has taken a few days though to find time and the words as well. As of Tuesday afternoon, my world was rocked with the news that our darling daughter Hayley has Invasive Ductal Carcinoma that has spread to the lymph system. News spreads fast, many of you have already been calling the Arts Center and emailing here with concerns, promises of prayers and kind tender words. Thank you from the heart, and yes, we feel your prayers; continue, they are needed and appreciated. Amidst the shock, we have now settled in with the reality that this is not a dream, we have strapped on our hiking boots and put on our boxing gloves; we are rallying and our little girl is an amazing faith filled fighter. Moment to moment that's all we can do; for the moment this is what we do know: OHSU is our next stop beginning Monday, many thorough tests, and hopefully life saving surgeries by the end of next week.

In order to keep all of you informed as best as possible, I am giving you a link to Hayley's blogspot; she is posting daily as new information comes, and when she is no longer able, I will take over and keep it current. For those of you who want to stay abreast and keep track, go here www.lifesprom.com. She has already been an inspiration to many...

www.lifesprom.blogspot.com

Already, the unbelievable support has been so humbling, heart warming beyond words, and yes, we have so much to pay forward and the journey is just beginning.

I will be taking a short time away from my duties here "painting my world pink" but will be looking forward to being back with everyone as soon as possible to keep working on the great things in store for this art home and to cheer you all on!

In the meantime, keep creating beauty, appreciate what you have, forgive and live for today.

Know without a doubt that your volunteering is what keeps this creative machine rolling, your support to Arts Center staff is ever needed... and yes, I have over this time adored working with everyone of you, my extended family, in every way, a privilege!

Many wonderful things have transpired and been experienced over this time and so many more amazing things are ahead!

Huge hugs and love to you all,

Aleta McGee, UVAA Gallery Manager

Albert Handell (one of the world's foremost pastel artists) is having a Mentoring Program in Brookings next August. It's already half full, so if anyone in interested they'd best put down a deposit before it is posted on his website as the spots will disappear quickly. I just went to the one in Fort Bragg last month. Fantastic! You can paint side-by-side with Albert or do your own thing. Crits every morning with career building information and sometimes a demo.  http://www.alberthandell.com  To register email albert@alberthandell.com  or call his studio office at 505-983-8373.

MONOTYPES FOR A PAINTERLY PRINT – with Corrine Loomis Dietz

Date Sunday – October 14, 2012

Time: 10:00am to 2:00pm

High School and Adult Students

Exuberance and Energy describe this workshop as you learn tips and techniques to create a “one of a kind” image, combining painting, drawing and PRINTMAKING on Plexi plate, simple tools and a gorgeous selection of Golden OPEN acrylics.  Ideal for mono type, this archival paint stays wet for hours offering a fun and relaxed experience with easy water clean up.  Our first investigation involves the “Subtractive” process.  We use a soft rubber brayer to coat a plexi plate with color and proceed to “subtract” paint by drawing, blotting & wiping away.  Each Paint will be hand-rubbed and pulled from the plate to reveal strokes and textures that are unlike anything you can do with a brush.

We will also explore additive techniques, registering the paper, and building many layers of color on the paper to develop more complex visual investigations.  These techniques can easily be repeated in simple work spaces and this process does not require a press!  This is a fun and exciting way to generate works on paper with a richness and diversity unlike any other method.  All paints and mediums are provided by GOLDEN.

Materials List: 2 sheets of Masa, Rives BFK, Stonehenge, Somerset Velvet or other  printmakeing paper.  An old hand towel and several 8 ½ x 11 photocopies of images you would like to work with.,
