Contra Dance in Coos Bay March 3, Public Welcome

Enjoy dancing to great live music at the Coos Bay Senior Center on Saturday evening, March 3, from 7-10PM. All ages are welcome to this public event which features music by the Outstanding Open Band, and dance calling lead by Stacy Rose of Coos Bay.  Contra dancing is a light-hearted form of social dancing that is easy to learn and fun for all ages.  The Contra Dance will be held at the Senior Center activity room which is located at 4^th and Ingersoll in Coos Bay.  Singles, couples and families will all enjoy contra dancing, and new dancers are always welcome.

The Folk Society has arranged for The Outstanding Open Band, an all-volunteer group of talented local musicians, to play lively contra tunes and waltzes.  Their skill and energy create the perfect atmosphere to swing your partner and do-se-do your neighbor.  It’s fun.  Wear your dancing shoes, casual clothes, and a big smile.

Stacy Rose, a personable and very popular caller with many years of experience, will teach dancers every step and figure throughout the evening starting with a lesson at 7PM.  Stacy will also be offering a callers’ workshop at the Senior Center from 3-5PM in the afternoon on March 3^rd.  Her workshop is free and open to the public. Calling is an integral part of contra dancing, and everyone can benefit from learning more about how a dance is called.  Please come and be a volunteer dancer to help new callers.  Call Stacy for more information at 541-808-1002.  Drop-ins are welcome.

This event is alcohol and fragrance free.  Refreshments are available.  Doors open at 6:45PM.  Admission: General $7, Seniors over 60 $6, Members $5, Students are always Free, and Supervised Children under 6 are also Free. Salem, Ore. -- More than $5 million in funding will be on the table when Oregon Cultural Trust Manager Aili Schreiner joins with colleagues from the Cultural Trust's Statewide Partners and other funders Feb. 6 through March 8 for "Conversations with Funders and Partners," a 14-stop state tour. Attendees will learn about grant programs available from multiple grantmakers and will have the opportunity to discuss their projects and programming. Other statewide programming resources also will be presented. 

Representatives from the Statewide Partners -- the Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage, Oregon Humanities and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office -- will be joined by counterparts from The Oregon Community Foundation and Portland's Regional Arts and Culture Council for some of the events. 

Organizations encouraged to attend "Conversations with Funders and Partners" include libraries, arts organizations, museums, cultural centers, historical societies, arts alliances, literary groups and heritage organizations. All cultural nonprofit organizations are welcome. 

"There are more than 1,450 cultural nonprofits serving Oregonians," said Schreiner. "We want to make sure they know about the grant funds and significant programming resources that are here to support them." 

Among the grant opportunities discussed will be the Cultural Trust's FY19 Cultural Development Grants; grant guidelines will be posted on the Trust website Monday, Feb. 12, with an April 13 application deadline (see details below). 

"Conversations with Funders and Partners" begin Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Northeast Portland and are scheduled in regional flights. Registration is not required.

Oregon Cultural Trust Cultural Development Grants 

The Cultural Trust's Cultural Development Grants recognize and support significant cultural programs and projects through four grant categories: access; preservation; creativity; and capacity. 

Since 2017 is projected to be a successful fundraising year for the Cultural Trust, a record amount will be available for grants which last year totaled more than $2.94 million. Cultural Development Grants represent one third of the annual funding the Cultural Trust provides to Oregon's cultural nonprofits. Other funding includes grants to the Trust's five statewide partners -- to support their projects and respective grant programs -- and to 45 county and tribal cultural coalitions that fund local initiatives and grants. 

FY2019 Cultural Development Grants are for projects and activities that will occur between Aug. 1, 2018, and July 30, 2019. 

Grant guidelines will be posted by Monday, Feb. 12, for an application deadline of 5 p.m. on Friday, April 13.

Free Traditional Dance Class Offered in North Bend

    Experience the joy of dancing to traditional music from around the world.  The South Coast Folk Society welcomes public participation in its new, free, traditional dance class for beginners and experienced dancers.  This class meets every Monday in North Bend for two hours starting at 7:00PM.  Singles, couples and families can all enjoy this casual social gathering.  Drop-ins are also encouraged to attend.  Every session is a fresh start. 

The North Bend Housing Authority has provided their spacious community activity room for this weekly class.  They are located at 1700 Monroe Street in North Bend, just three blocks west of the library on Connecticut Avenue.

    This class is appropriate for beginners.  All dances are taught.  No previous dance experience is required.  All ages and skill levels can have fun dancing to live music played by talented area musicians. The emphasis will be on traditional dances from America, Europe, and around the world.  These include circles, line dances, set dances, folk, and ballroom dances.  New musicians are invited to join the band.  No partner is needed.  For more information email southcoastfolksociety@gmail.com or call Paul at 541-404-8267.  Join us on February 19.

Sunday, February 11 Second Sunday - Museum Free Day The Second Sunday of every month is free admittance for all, with a fun activity from 1-3pm.  This months' activity is vegetable prints. Second Sunday is co-sponsored by Coquille Animal Hospital and an anonymous business. Sunday will be the last day to view the Agriculture Exhibit.  Our mezzanine will be closed for the remainder of the month to prepare for Patriot Nations. Basket Weaving Class February 24th 10am-4pm Only 7 spots left in this amazing class taught by Stephanie Craig. She does artifact conservation and works with museums recreating baskets. Watercolors, photographs , and ARTRAGE digital images by Bandon artist Victoria Tierney inspired by walks on our local beaches will be on display at the HIGH TIDE CAFE on Cape Arago Hiway in Charleston February 1st through March 31st.  Reception is THIS SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 11th, FROM 3-5 PM.  The artist will also be bringing greeting cards and unframed images just for the occasion.  Guitar music by Mark Tierney.  A cake to celebrate all the February birthdays.  All are welcome. Coos History Museum to Host First Tuesday Talks Lecture Series

Beginning on Tuesday - February 6, 2018

6:00pm – 8:30pm

The Coos History Museum’s 2018 First Tuesday Talks lecture series is set to begin on Tuesday, February 6, and will feature speakers Joshua Hirschstein and Maren Beck, Authors and Textile Experts, SE Asian Textiles. Copies of their publication, Silk Weavers of Hill Tribe Laos, is currently available for purchase in the museum store. The speakers will be available to do a book signing on February 6 and will display SE Asian textiles that will be for sale that evening, with 20% of sale proceeds to benefit the museum.

The lecture will begin at 6:30pm. The museum, galleries, and store will be open for extended hours during the event. Cost for the event is $7.00 for adults. Admission is free for museum members.
