English Country Dancing in Coos Bay March 30, Public Welcome

The South Coast Folk Society welcomes public participation at their English Country Dance Ball at the Coos Bay Senior Center Dance Hall on Saturday, March 30, from 7:00 to 10:0PM.  This special event will feature live music by the Outstanding Open Band, and dance lessons and calling by Bob Fraley of Eugene.  Singles, couples and families can all enjoy English Country Dancing, and new dancers are always welcome.  It’s a lovely, graceful form of casual social dancing appropriate for all ages.  Experience is not required.  All dances are taught.

The ever-popular Outstanding Open Band consists of talented local musicians from throughout the South Coast.  They play a variety of instruments including accordion, flute, fiddle, recorder, piano, concertina, guitar, penny whistle, and percussion.  The Outstanding Open Band is dedicated to playing great dance music, and playing it well.  Bob Fraley, the caller for the evening, is a highly experienced and very personable instructor and caller.  His English Country Dance repertoire is most enjoyable and ideal for all skill levels.

This event is alcohol and fragrance free.  It will take place at the Coos Bay Senior Center located at 886 S. 4th, corner of 4th and Ingersoll in Coos Bay.  Refreshments will be served.  Doors open at 6:45PM.  General admission: $7; Seniors over 60: $6; Members: $5; Students: free.  For more information call 541-404-8267, or go to their web site at www.southcoastfolksociety.com.

World Music Concert and Dance Coming to Langlois March 31

The World Music Concert and Dance is coming to Langlois on Sunday, March 31, from 5-8PM.  Great music and festive social dancing are on tap at this exciting event.  The South Coast Folk Society is pleased to announce that the Kef Brass Dance Band from Eugene will be making a special appearance at the Langlois Cheese factory, 94179 Allen Boice Drive 

Kef is a premier dance band that has received praise at venues throughout the Pacific Northwest for the quality of their music and the authenticity of their sound. This event is a Balkan/International dance festival, open to the public, with a free dance workshop in the afternoon to learn basic Balkan village dances from 3:00-4:30, and a dance party in the evening with Kef playing music from 5-8, all at the Langlois Cheese Factory.

The nine musicians in the Kef Brass Band have honed their talent over the past twelve years playing for audiences from Seattle to San Francisco.  The band features trumpets, baritones, flugelhorn, euphonium, sousaphone, percussion, accordion, and vocals.  Their music is infused with energy and grace.  Its distinctive sound is delightful.  Kef plays a wonderful variety of dance music from Eastern Europe and around the world.  From Balkan village folk melodies to lively dance grooves, all their music is a joy to hear and a pleasure to dance to. 

Local dance instructors Paul Poresky and Kef band member Sharon Rogers will lead the free afternoon workshop to enhance everyone’s enjoyment of the evening dance party. Thanks to the support of the local business sponsors listed below, the cost for the evening dance party is just $12.00.  Students are free.  Both events are alcohol and fragrance free.  Potluck refreshments are welcome.  Doors open at 2:30. For more information call 541-404-8267.

Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center Quarterly Art Show
Call to Artists April 2019 Dogs, Cats and Other Pets—With Their People or Without”
The Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center will host a show of artwork depicting dogs, cats and other pets—with or without their people. All breeds and styles of dogs and cats, or any other types of pets, with or without their human owners are subjects for the artist's consideration. Artists may enter 1-3 pieces using painting, collage, mixed media, drawing, photography or assemblage in all artistic styles: representational, abstract, or futuristic. All works must be able to be hung on the wall.
Please remember that art on the hospital walls is meant to entertain and de-stress the patients, families, staff and general visitors. It is not a venue for nudity, violence, morbidity, or a political soapbox. Thank you for your continued positive approach to art in these shows.
