Wings

Subject: April at Bandon Library Art Gallery

April 2016 at the Bandon Library Art Gallery

Coralie Coen, also known as Mrs. Roadrunner, photographs nature in situ as an expression of her deep desire to contribute to an understanding of its creatures and the need to preserve and protect them and their environment. Her home in the wild gives her continued access to their homes, where she makes pictures to reveal the beauty in those hidden places. This show, “Wings,” concentrates on birds and insects, but her body of work includes all of the natural world here in Oregon.
In the cases Marlo Dance Studio has created a display to celebrate their new production, “Once Upon a Time,” an original dance dedicated to the Bandon Public Library. A young girl visits the library after taking class; the librarians give her an enchanted book, which takes her on a journey through the world of literature.
The show runs from April 1st – 30th. There will be a reception on Sunday, April 3rd, from 1.30 – 3.00 in the Sprague Room.

Vote Now

As some of you may know, the Coos Bay rail line is celebrating 100 years this August and the Port of Coos Bay is planning a 3 day event similar to the “Railroad Jubilee” that kicked off rail service to the Willamette Valley in 1916.

100 years ago, a contest was held to “vote for your favorite theme.” Today, we are holding a contest to “vote for your favorite Railroad Centennial Logo.” As a vital part to the Port and this event, we are asking for your contribution and vote!

Attached to this e-mail are four railroad logos labeled as logo one, two, three, and four. Please vote for one of them either by going to the Port’s Facebook pagehttps://www.facebook.com/portofcoosbay or e-mailing Fiona Bai at the Port of Coos Bay with your choice, fbai@portofcoosbay.com.

Your votes will be tallied up with the total Facebook votes in selecting the final Railroad Centennial Logo this Friday, March 18th.

Thank you for your participation. May the best logo win!

IN MORE DETAIL
Join contemporary landscape painter Randall David Tipton in using an experimental approach towards landscape in the Mixed Watermedia Workshop that will take place Sunday, July 10, 2016 from 10 am to 4 pm.

Instructor Randall David Tipton provides mostly demonstrations of various techniques, experimental in nature, using unusual tools and different approaches.  What he offers is new attitudes about the process itself and our motivations as painters.  Participants will use improvisation as a strategy, with less focus on the preconception of the results and more awareness of why we choose the subjects we do.  The big question dealt with in this workshop will be: what animates our imaginations?  Tipton will offer critiques if desired.

Class size is limited to 12 participants with a minimum of 6 participants.  Cost is $105 for CAM members, $130 for non-members.  Registration ends June 27, 2016.  For registration go to www.coosart.org or visit Coos Art Museum at 235 Anderson in Downtown Coos Bay.

f Reedsport has once again adopted the beach accessed by Sparrow Park Road (just North of Gardiner) during SOLV’s Annual Great Oregon Spring Beach Clean-up on Saturday, March 26, 2016—rain or shine.

To add to the excitement of this event the Rotary Club and Ocean Beaches Glassblowing & Gallery (Seal Rock, OR) are donating glass floats.  These floats will be given away by raffle to those who volunteer their time during the clean-up.  Participants will receive one raffle ticket for each bag of trash turned in during the day.  At the end of the clean-up, names will be drawn and each drawn ticket holder will receive a glass float – limit one per person.

Meet us at the parking lot at the junction of Highways 101 & 38 at 9:30 am on Saturday, March 26, 2016.  Carpooling and transportation will be arranged that morning to get everyone to the clean-up site.  You can also join the group any time during the morning by simply coming to the beach site at the end of Sparrow Park Road (please note the road can be very rough and the parking is very limited).

The Rotary Club wishes to thank Bob & Vick Meyer of Ocean Beaches Glassblowing & Gallery for the discounted glass floats.  You can learn more about Ocean Beaches at www.oceanbeachesglass.com.  It also wishes to thank the Sugar Shack Bakery for the donation of donuts for the morning’s event.

Take a look at this year's floats!

Isabelle C̫t̩ studied at McGill University in Montreal, the University of Alberta, and the University of Toronto, then spent 15 years in the UK before returning to her native Canada in 2005. Her research group pioneered meta-analyses of large datasets to reconstruct pathways of ecological change on coral reefs, measure the global effectiveness of marine protected areas (MPAs) in protecting fish and their habitats, and assess the impacts of multiple stressors on natural ecosystems. More recently, she has turned her attention to marine invasive species Рmeasuring their impact, predicting their spread and how best to control them. Although much of her work is on tropical habitats, she is actively involved in MPA research and establishment on the coast of British Columbia. Cascade Crossing's music is influenced by many styles, with touches of baroque, Caribbean, Celtic, Klezmer, traditional, northern, southern, jazz and ragtime. With many original tunes, expect the unexpected, from hard-driving reels to smooth, mysterious jigs. Using their wide range of instrumentation and styles, Cascade Crossing fills the dance hall with an exciting palette of musical colors and textures.  Members of the band are Lori Prime on fiddle, Carl Thor on piano, dulcimer and mando, Sarah Goss on bass, whistle and oboe, and Rich Goss on guitar and percussion.

March at Bandon Library Art Gallery

With her hand-constructed fiber art, and using screen-printing, dyeing, painting, and burning, and design elements such as beads and colorful shredded cloth, Susan DeSalvatore explores themes of grief, grace, mercy, and the phases of life common to all. She incorporates language into some of the pieces, both single words and poems, and uses printed photographs to make a complex canvas on which to express her ideas and reveal layers of meaning. Other pieces are collages made of torn bits of thread and cloth—abstract works that are brilliant celebrations of pure color and texture.
Jane Ujhazi's natural stone necklaces of silver, amber, turquoise, and other semi-precious stones are contemporary, but happily acknowledge the past. A collector of antique and tribal beads from around the world, Jane is inspired by the long tradition of human self-decoration, and evokes many different periods and lands with her designs.
The show runs from March 1st - March 30, 2016.
