Concierge Art

The term "concierge" evolved from the French Comte Des Cierges, The Keeper of the Candles, who tended to visiting nobles in castles of the medieval era. In medieval times, the concierge was an officer of the King who was charged with executing justice, with the help of his bailiffs

What new plan have you worked out to promote your art?

You know I don’t believe in chasing trends so why am I posting about Concierge Art?

Because it isn’t a trend, you don’t have to chase it, and it builds your back stock, while keeping your hand, in and your name out.

Take another look at the definition, “tended the visiting nobles…charged with executing justice.”

Just who are the nobles of the art world being as how this here is ‘Merica and we don’t have nobles outside the entertainment and sports field, (Have you seen Capt and the Avengers and what they are doing at the Olympics? If you owned stock in Megan Rapinoe it has soared since the second game of the World Cup a year ago and is now running with the Bulls at the London Games.), so where exactly are you going to find nobles and what are you going to do with them once you find them?

Well, I think you should take a look at the gallery owners and think about just who would you want representing your art and what you have done to thank them for flacking your work and just what you are willing to do to help them promote their gallery and the works it carries.

Gallery owners have a thankless job, they have to find a space, pay for that space, light, heat and pay taxes on that space, promote the space to artists who have the attention span of a cat and then they have to comply with all of the rules, regulations and codes all of the politicians who do not like art and who don’t think much of artists and who just want to suck the money out of art can pass into law so that they can beat the gallery owner over the head with them.

And just how are the gallery owners supposed to comply with all of these city, county, state, and national rules, commissions, taxes and codes? They do it by selling your art, which they have to hunt down, beg, threaten, plead, cousin and coddle out of you who, tries as hard as possible to avoid, ignore and hide.

Yes, first and foremost gallery owners are merchants. They sell stuff to keep the electricals going and they have to sell a lot of stuff these days and that means they have to have a lot of stuff and if they don’t their kids don’t wear clothes and you just see what happens when you send your kids to school nekkid and wait for Family Services to fall on your pointy head. So let's not be so hard to get and keep those poor kids covered and the gallery lights on.

Remember they are the visiting nobles you are tending and if you don’t tend them see how fast your visit ends.

Are you bringing in the kind of art they want to display and if you aren’t have you worked out a good reason and have a plan for explaining how and why they should stock it and sell it? They have a bunch of artists to manage; the marketing plan has to come from you. If you don’t know how and why to sell your work you can bet no one else will.

Have you thanked the gallery for supporting your work when they take a piece and have you kept the message coming? Funny thing, people who feel like you appreciate them do a lot more for you than if they think you are using them for your own ends, especially if you are cause they are so it should be mutual.

That’s right keep those cards and letters coming in. if a gallery takes your work you should have a card with thanks on it headed their way before the sun sets. If they’ve sold a piece you need to thank them and do it in writing, cause words are cheap but a note goes on and on.

Have you asked if you could do a demonstration, participate in a reception, sign a book, yours if you have one cause signing some other guy's book is likely to get you noticed in a bad way, although having Pat Snyder’s book on the counter right in front of me has me practicing my forgery skills cause he has much better stuff to put in a book than I would so signing his book would be a fast track idea.

Have you asked if the gallery would like some impulse items to go along with your art? You do have small, inexpensive items which can be added to a big purchase for a coupla dollars and make the buyer feel like they are getting something for nothing? No? Then get yee over to Staples or Zazzle and make some.

And if you have a gallery owner who has done right by your for several years and you’ve done nothing to let them know how much you appreciate their efforts don’t be afraid to send flowers, bake a cake or give them some art. They are people and they can be had if only you’ll put out the effort.

Tend to the nobles.

It may sound like a humiliating job but you’d be surprised the dividends it will pay. Take the time to let folks who work for you so that you have the time to create the beautiful paintings, etchings, plaster footprints, Crayola handprints that you do so well. They deserve it and you’ll be the one who benefits.

Monday Plein Air Paintout Information

Hello Everyone,

This Monday, July 30th we will be re-visiting the madrone trees at Amber Harris' house.  We can be there anytime between 12 - 5 p.m.  You can arrive at 12 noon and stay until 5 p.m., or leave sooner.  Come later in the day, whatever fits your schedule.  Bring your lunches, snacks and beverages and painting gear..

Directions:  Take either Highway 42 S to Prosper Jct. Rd. or take Hwy 101 north of Bandon to Prosper Jct. Rd (south of the Coquille River Bridge where Riverside Drive meets Hwy 101)

Take PROSPER JCT RD. until you see the entrance on the north side of the road marked GLENWOOD ESTATES.  Turn into the entrance road then make a right on Sunny Loop.  Watch your speed.  Drive east on Sunny Loop, (keep going straight when you come to N. Sunny Loop) continue until the road curves left, follow it--start looking on the right hand side.

Our theme this summer is "Iconic Trees of the South Coast".  So if you have a favorite tree or two that you think we would like to set up and paint, please let me know.  We will have a show with our trees later on.

Anyone have beautiful madrone, maple trees, or others, on their property, or know of trees that are accessible to painters and parking of cars, please call me.

Our plein air group has been invited to put paintings in the window cases by JoAnn Fabrics in Pony Village Mall during August.  So please be figuring out what you want to show, along with label information, etc.

My phone number 541-297-6118.

Thanks!
Ava

Artists' Accomplishments:
We want to honor the achievements of all you artists, so don't be shy about
sending the highlights of your art lives, or those of your artist friends.

Congratulations to Janne LaValle, Susan Lehman, Clayton Redwood, Pat Snyder and dorothea tortilla for the beautiful show at Black Market Gourmet in Coos Bay.  The opening reception was fabulous, including the music and food, but especially the art.  If you haven't had a chance to see the show, please do.

Congratulations to Steve and Susan Dimmock of Bandon whose year-long show at Oregon Coast Aquarium has been extended for another summer.  If you haven't yet seen the show, or want to see it again, check out the "Passages of the Deep" (where the fish in the tunnel are located.)  They are now the official photographers for the OC Aquarium, taking pictures of their animals, birds and other creatures for their marketing, and are currently working on a photo essay of the organization.

Congratulations to J.M. Steele, Gold Beach, who was juried into the "Icons of the West" show at Dana Gallery in Missoula, Montana, June 1st - Sept. 12th.  Her oil painting "Rough Rider" was juried into the art show, and sold at the opening reception.  Way to go, Jeanne!  To view the show copy this into your browser:  http://www.danagallery.com/artists/_icons%202012_/index.html

Oregon Arts Commission (OAC) has set a deadline of August 15, 2012 for the first of three deadlines for Career Opportunity Grants.  Additional resources from The Ford Family Foundation are available to mid-career visual artists in this cycle.

Guidelines and access to the on-line grant application are
available at
http://oregon.culturegrants.org/navigation/links/page/grants-to-individuals.

Career Opportunity Grants support Oregon artists who have identified critical opportunities to advance their careers through the development of artistic, or business and professional skills.

Artists may apply for funding to show in national or international exhibits, to participate in conferences, workshops or residencies, or to explore other ways to expand their knowledge and business base.  Up to $1500 may be requested.  Emerging and established artists practicing all disciplines are eligible, students and hobbyists are not.

The Ford Family Foundation Opportunity Grants target full-time visual artists in the 30 and over age group.  Awards range from $1500 to $7500.  Artists apply for The Ford Family Foundation funds in the same manner as the Career Opportunity grants; the applications are reviewed in a single combined process.

"We are very pleased to offer this important support to Oregon artists in partnership with The Ford Family Foundation", said OAC Executive Director Chris D'Arcy.  "The Career Opportunity grants have enabled artists to take designs into the commercial marketplace; allowed others to travel to present their work at international fairs and festivals, and provided for the professional recording of new music.  These artists are important part of Oregon's creative economy.

Grant applications are evaluated according to the following three criteria.

Artistic Merit 50% quality of work samples, background and experience as demonstrated by resume, samples and other supporting materials.

Career Impact 45% uniqueness of the opportunity, quality of the proposed event, or a clearly defined need for the artistic or business skill proposed to be developed.

Budget 5%:  Costs proportional to proposed activity, purpose for which grant funds will be used.

Conflict Resolution

Didja ever have one of those days when you had everything planned out, knew just what you needed to do and had the time to do it, no small trick in itself and then everything went straight to hell?

I seem to be having a lot of those lately.

They say, “Wanna make God laugh, tell him your plans.”

Okay, so my direct connection to the celestial isn’t so hot and I don’t usually share my grocery list with the greater powers so I haven’t heard any deep solemn laughter but I sure have suspected someone was laughing at me.

This past week I had my usual share of plans, write something for the blog, take a look at the upcoming art shows and see if I had anything I could enter, stop by the local galleries and see if they have anything coming up that I need to plug, stop by Goodwill and see what they have, cause you never know what they might get in that you desperately need and then get it all done before Wednesday at nine am so that I could sit back and watch Capt and the Avengers take on France. (Yes you do, Abby Wambach, Captain America and the United States Olympic Women’s Soccer Team, featuring, Alex Morgan the Fox in the Box, Carli Lloyd the Shooter and the Dealer Megan Rapinoe, the playmaker extraordinaire)

I did get to watch Cap and the avengers and yes, thank you they won even if it was a bit of a nail-biter to begin with, but that’s the only thing I planned that I got to do.

See after three years of worrying we finally got a good diagnosis for the recurring sore on our cat’s tail. We’ve had her in several times and no one seemed to know why she kept having this spot on her tail get raw and red. She had the spot and a broken tail when we found her and it never seemed to bother her so we’ve pretty much let it alone, except we have a jealous boy cat that attacked her and we were under the impression that he bit her and that was the source of the injury. But after three years and a dozen trips to the vet the spot was still there and it occurred to us maybe we should get a second opinion. And we did.

Seems if an animal has a serious injury which results in permanent damage to an extremity they will pick and gnaw at it until they bite it off. No one ever told us that. No one until last Thursday, the decision then became moot, the tail had to go.

Now this wouldn’t be much of a problem except this is our tiniest, eensiest, baby kitty who is a purr-burger and a love and wants nothing but a dry place to sleep and some descent food and a person to love and even though we love all of the cat kids she is the loveriliest of them all and we couldn’t allow her to go on risking infection and death just cause we were too chicken to have the tail removed. So into the hospital she went on Monday morning, not-so-bright-and-early.

I have mentioned that I am a night crawler and my heart doesn’t start beating until after the sun has crossed the yard arm, and that the only way I have ever seem a sun rise is if I was coming home and that I think sunlight is vastly overrated and what can you expect from a day that begins with getting up in the morning?

The nice vet does not understand this and schedules his surgeries for first thing in the morning, early morning, dawn patrol, you can’t send a kid like that up in a crate like this first thing in the morning morning.

I drew the short straw and had to haul it out at five-thirty so that I could pump in enough tea that my brain would work well enough to drive without being a danger to myself and others.

The cat kid went in and the worry began. Now I’ve had lost of animals and have with grave misgivings allowed them to go to the vet for advanced care but with the Baby it was brutal and the Long Sufferin felt the same way. We waited with a worm on our tongues for the results.

They came and all was well but she had to stay over night so by the time she was able to come home Tuesday afternoon safe to say the Long Sufferin and I were baskets cases.

She was cute, with her Brazilian butt and a collar, sky blue, Velcro closing, trumpet shaped, anti-stitch tampering type. And it was sooooooooo good to have her home.

While I was waiting for the news, a second time-altering event happened, my sister called to say she was coming to visit. Yes, I have a sister and she can visit, but her husband, Jim the Good doesn’t like animals roaming around his head while he is trying to sleep and that means we have to get their itinerary so that we can lock down a reservation at the local friendly neighborhood motel and place to stay wild-life free.

Then there was Easy Lane Frames and Select Gallery, we had promised to go by and take in the Salute to the Military show and of course didn’t and then didn’t have time to show up and say, “Oopsy,” and we felt bad that the new show Sand and Sea had gone up and we still hadn’t made it by so we did and boy was it worth it cause the art is fantastic and if you haven’t you should and while you are there ask Jane about the book she has, which you should buy for your own library and for any military relatives on your list cause you know that making a list and checking it twice isn’t all that far away and if you wait you will run out of time like I did this week and then all of your friends and family will be annoyed and you will get nothing but the re-gifted stuff that they’ve been hiding in the closet since last December so don’t wait get a copy of the book and avoid all of that regifted stuff that you will hide in your closet until you have a chance to give it back to the same people who gave it to your this time.

So you see, if you let it life will squeeze out all of the time you have to spend on your art and that would be a crime, so make your plans and be ready when life throws you a curve and have a backup in place and be ready to shift and dodge and weave and even duck and maybe you’ll have a more productive week than I managed.

And don’t forget to watch Captain America and the Avengers on Saturday morning, 9AM Pacific Time on NBC and NBC Sports, live from London. Go Team USA!

Take Five

Have you been to see the Take Five show at the Black Market Gourmet? Why not and did you miss the artist's reception last weekend? Shame on you.

Of course you do know that the Take Five title comes from the legendary jazz piece by Dave Brubeck, "Take Five" but in this case it referrers to the five talented artists represented in the show, Janne LaValle, Clayton Redwood, Susan Lehman, Pat Snyder and dorothea tortilla.

So if you didn't go you can still have a look and then go cause the show is still up and Jardin will fix you something wonderful if you call ahead and beg pitifully and plead and whine and grovel and that will make it even more wonderful so you have no excuse and what are you waiting for?

Left Coast Jazz provided the music with Jardin sitting in...

The artists were there...

Charles was there...

The Ousleys were there...

There was music...

And spirit...

And serious art consideration...

Now aren't you sorry you missed out?

Feelin' Groovy

Every year 'round this time OCMA, that's the Oregon Coast Music Association hosts the Oregon Coast Music Festival, handy that having the hosting organization share the same name with the event so that it doesn't get too confusing for those of us who aren't part of the planning, just part of the funning and not able to be bothered with all f the details so that we get to enjoy without the heavy lifting and one of the things that they hiost is a free concert at Shore Acres where you can without paying a cent for the music just the fee for park usage get to hear some pretty exceptional sounds in the beautiful summer at a park that would be heaven if it weren't all ready part of the Park Service and thus a governmental agency and not to be confused with a celestial paradise.

There was music and dancing and bubbles in the air.

Some took it easy...

Some beat it out...

There were introductions...

Wild rhythms...

Native dances...

Mood music...

And pretty bubbles in the air...

Could you ask for anything more?

Bryan Cabin

Big cities aren’t all bad; you just have to find the small towns hiding inside the sprawl.

Oh I know what you are going to say, they’re impersonal, they’re rude, they’re noisy, they’re scary and all of that is true but they are also wonderful, charming delightful places.

It is a good thing we don’t live in television. Aside from the distasteful reality shows and the soap operas and the mindless children’s shows, (Is it any wonder that kids are rushing to grow up? If you had to deal with a steady diet of Sponge Bob or Dr Seuss you’d be in a hurry too. How do they stand it? It makes my teeth itch just walking past a set with that on.), and the WWF, television is a dangerous place to live.

In the real world there are only ten or twelve serial killers operating in the whole of the United States and while you wouldn’t want to live next door to one, you aren’t likely to run into one at Wally World. But on TV they are behind every door, each hedge, under every rock, leaf and twig and they all speak and act like Hannibal Lecter, (Thank you Tony Hopkins) but they aren’t the worst thing you have to face, for heaven’s sake don’t get shot on television!

In the life getting shot falls somewhere between getting struck by lightning and going to dinner with Bruce the great white shark from Jaws. And if you do, there is an eighty percent chance you’ll walk away not only from the hospital but from the crime scene too. You’d be amazed at how much insult the human body can manage and still have enough left over to get away from a hospital.

But on television if you get shot and aren’t one of the lead actors, you are just dead.

No wonder cities scare the tar out of us.

And the drugs and the gangs and the violence, oh my! There are drugs and there are gangs although there weren’t nearly as many in nearly as many places before the Feds started giving out Gang Suppression grants. If you want an extra patrolman or two and you ask the Feds for some cash they will injure themselves laughing, but to fight gangs, you can get a starter grant of fifty thousand dollars and more if there are actually kids living in your town. Yeah that’s right some of the grants went to places with no kids but that all got sorted out in six or seven years which isn’t all that long in government years.

The drugs and the violence do exist, but they frequently go together, no buy drugs no risk of violence.

So why are we so frightened of the big Bad City?

Well, we aren’t, not everywhere. Did you know that the residents of the largest city on the continental shelf, New York City don’t even use the New York part, they call their home The City, yes, my diligent little Grammarians the The gets capitalized cause it is a proper noun used in this context. It is the first name of City.

And even though The City has as many of the sins and sores of any modern metropolis, the residents love their city and they walk about, wisely but unafraid, for the most part.

How in the world do they do that, I heard you ask?

They can do it because they live in little towns scattered all around The City.

Back when the earth had just started to cool and things were crawling out of the ooze, John Neely Bryan built a cabin along the banks of the Trinity River where I hear there was water and fish something the Trinity hasn’t had in the last millennia and settled down. Why he did no one can say, but he did and from that humble beginning Dallas grew.

Dallas is unique it has no reason to exist, there are no ports, no railheads, no natural resources, no vast forests, no industry and even after ole John got some neighbors there wasn’t any of that stuff.

But Dallas got built and it swallowed up everything in its path. There used to be a dozen cities surrounding Dallas. Now they are all part of the city and even though they have lost their independence, they have never surrendered their character.

You want an Irish Pub? There’s a place. Want a dark, dirty, smoke-filled jazz club there’s a place. Want a poetry jam, here’s a place. There’s a place because the small towns within the giant city have kept there own nature.

Why do you care? Dallas is 1800 miles away and it is hot, dry and full of Republicans and those are just the worst parts.

You care because part of being an artist is finding a place where you can recharge your batteries.

Sure, there are folks who can do that with meditation. I hear shoes and chocolate can do it if you are of the distaff persuasion. Never understood the unhealthy relationship women have with foot gear. Some people get their tank topped up with a trip out into Nature, but every last one no matter where they plug in their charger needs that place. If you live in paradise and coming from Texas I can tell you this is pretty damn close, then you’ve got it made. If you don’t don’t despair, go find your small town and see if there aren’t some of those wonderful, like minded people there looking for just the things you have to offer.

You’ll be surprised how much magic can found if you stop trembling and hiding afraid of the dark and come out into the world and find a family, a town where you are one of the Big Fish. Maybe that’s what I missed about ole John; it wasn’t the place so much as the chance that pals would show up that made him stay.

You Must Marimba This

You do know that decades like naughty children do not end where they should according to the calendar, talking heads or the national media. They do not neatly come to a close with the end of the required rack or years. They have their own ways of telling time and they do it whether you agree or not.

The decade we call the Sixties did not smoothly begin in nineteen-sixty and end with the dawn of nineteen-seventy, like its brothers before it it began on the half decade, just past the midnight hour December 31 of nineteen-fifty-five in time for nineteen-fifty-six and ended just before the midnight hour December the 31th nineteen and sixty-five. So the decade we know as the Sixties was not the drug-crazed, flower-powered, hippie, free-love, Frisbee in the park, body paint, war protesting madness the media loves to recall but the buttoned-down, blazer wearing, plain vanilla, Lennon sisters, Pat Boone, Lettermen, Ozzie and Harriet world just before.

Don’t believe me, try this, When did the Nineties get so gay? They didn’t start out that way, and no they did not have to come out of the closet, gay was a different thing then. I’ll tell you when, nineteen-twenty-six. In fact the Nineties weren’t all that gay if you start with the top of the decade cause there was a severe economic depression sparked by the Panic of 1893.

And if you check it worked like that for most of the other decades too. The First World War broke out after the middle of the decade so the nineteen hundreds have to end in 1915 instead of 1910 like the history books want you to believe. That way the War Years get to cover the time from 1916 to 1925 and the Twenties get to roar from 1926 to 1935 and the Big One, The Real War, The Valiant Years are from 1936 to 1945 and so on.

Yeah I know too much information, but you had to hear it to make much sense of what I am going to tell you next. Those wild and crazy, hippie, dance naked in the park, long-haired, Rock’n’Roll years were the Sixties and the quiet, Ike-loving years before them were the Fifties, so in the late Fifties before the Beatles came to Ed Sullivan and Mick strutted and even Keith Richards was still alive, (There is no evidence that Keith Richards is still alive. After all he has put his body through if even half of the rumors are true he is long dead and his body just hasn’t gotten the memo yet), music still had melody.

In 1965 the best selling album was the soundtrack to Mary Poppins. In fact even after the turn of the decade according to me, the best selling album was…drum roll, please…Whipped Cream and Other Delights, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass.

That’s right not a heavy metal guy in sight and that was the middle of the decade according to the media and the calendar.

But we know better don’t we? We have been reading and know that actually it isn’t a surprise that Rock hadn’t conquered all because the Sixties had just started.

And in this strange twilight before the Rock Gods there were all sorts of interesting and different artists working the music trade. John Phillips had the Mommas and the Poppas just breaking into the charts, the Beach Boys were still urging us to pick a California Girl and Spanky and Our Gang were doing wonderful melodies which rock producers and record companies had no idea what the hell to do with and the there was the alternative to Herb Alpert, Julius Wechter and the Baja Marimba Band.

The music was close enough to the Tijuana Brass you may not remember it and if you never saw them in concert you wouldn’t know why they should be remembered. They were just a bunch of studio musicians made up like Mexican banditos who played slightly tinkley mariachi music set to a jazz rhythm. They had three or four legitimate hits, Ghost Riders in the Sky, The Cry of the Wild Goose and Comin’ in the Back Door, and they raised the ire of Mexican-American groups for insensitivity because of their album covers but mostly they were ignored.

But if you ever saw them in concert or bought their albums you never forgot. Live they were electric, intricate comedy bits interspersed with their music so well performed and integrated that you never got distracted but the laughs were there aplenty.

I saw them at UT Arlington when I should have been working the swing shift at the plant and yes, Hayes, if you are still alive I did call in sick and wasn’t. It was a magical evening and I have enjoyed the memory for the last forty-five years.

Their album covers were works of art, see there is art buried in this post, and the biggest inside joke was trying to discover who was performing the lewd act where on the cover. I know but it was big doings in nineteen sixty-seven.

And unlike a bunch of albums I bought back in those days I have all of my Baja Marimba Band albums transferred to CD and loaded on my non-ipod and I listen often

So take a look at a cover or two and see if you see that unsavory act and if you do just how offended you are. I wasn’t, still am not and the part about the Banditos doesn’t bother me even though I am directly descended from Francisco de Miranda so live with it and get a sense of humor.

And one more thing, if you didn’t go to Shore Acres this noon and hear the White Rhino Marimba band you missed out, but there is still time. They are playing at Rogers Zoo, 2037 Sherman Avenue, North Bend, 541-756-2550, call for reservations and hurry they play tonight and even though they are serious musicians and play Afro-inspired marimba you will hate it if you miss out so shut off the computer and go, there’s no time to waste.

Monday Plein Air Paintout Information

Hello Everyone,

This Monday, July 23rd, we will be painting from 3 - 6 p.m.  We will meet on the road that runs parallel to Beach Loop, on the east side of Coquille Point (Kronenberg County Park), between 11th & 9th Streets.  It is the short street that runs in front of the Bandon Beach Motel on the west end of 11th Street.  The stand of short shore pine trees will be the subject.

Thanks!
Ava

p.s.  If you plan to paint at the UVAA Plein Air Event in Roseburg in September--the Deadline is August 7th so get your registration in now so you don't miss out!!

Artists' Accomplishments:
We want to honor the achievements of all you artists, so don't be shy about
sending the highlights of your art lives, or those of your artist friends.

Her blogspot address is:  http://jeannesteele.blogspot.com/

Congratulations to Mack Holman of Tsunami Gallery in Gardiner.  He will be creating a life-size sculpture of a woman walking on the beach clutching a book to be placed on the grounds of Siuslaw Public Library in Florence.
