Is Realism Relevant? Conner Contemporary Art enthusiastically says ‘YES’ with three concurrent solo exhibitions featuring new works by Erik Thor Sandberg, Nathaniel Rogers and Katie Miller. Six centuries after Flemish oil painting branded the early modern age, each of these DC area artists maximizes his or her command of the realist technique to express the human condition in contemporary life. Engagement with current issues imbues these painters’ works with the relevance of their own time, while their informed references to artistic precedents casts present situations within a historical perspective. With its world class Old Master museum collections, Washington is a natural home for realism. Representational painting began to make a resurgence here in the 1970s, in the wake of the prominent Washington Color abstractionists. Today, Sandberg, Rogers and Miller are at the leading edge of contemporary realism in DC.

> ERIK THOR SANDBERG unleashes allegories of our increasingly complex relationship with nature through narratives of power and passivity that unfold across panoramic vistas in Reparatory Gestures, his fourth solo exhibition with the gallery. Sandberg, who has repeatedly demonstrated mastery of the human figure and landscape as a subjects, emphasizes the viewer’s body in the experience of the topographies depicted in the four large concave paintings that anchor this new series. The artist designed curved panels to envelope us in captivating expressions of man’s manipulations of the environment. Sandberg impressed artificiality on each wilderness landscape with depictions of intrusive human activity, or vestiges of it, such as a port-a-potty, picnic fixings, and guardrails. Whether his characters are engaged in libidinous acts, or immobilized by uncertainty, the contexts in which we find them question the ultimate consequences of their choices. As the picture planes bend, so do the meanings that play out across them. The concave arch of each panel pushes and pulls the ideas represented on it, diverting them from a predetermined linear progression into elusive possibilities for our thoughts to follow. Sandberg reminds us that our personal and collective journeys may lack sure direction or fixed outcomes. Yet, he also suggests, with flawlessly rendered details, including glistening drops of nectar and multi-colored birds’ eggs, that nature’s powers of imaging and reparation are ceaselessly at work, leaving us with hope that these forces can restore the balance that man repeatedly compromises.

> NATHANIEL ROGERS presents vivid analogies of human phenomena surrounding the concept of crisis - how we create it, deal with it, or ignore it - in When Disaster Strikes, his second solo exhibition with the gallery. Rogers’ superior draftsman’s skill is perfectly matched to his sharp wit in this series of intimate panel paintings that reveal coping strategies, or lack thereof, in the automated, indulgent contemporary world. The artist postulates extreme life situations that manifest at intersections and dissonances between behavior and virtual reality. In scenes of real and imagined disasters, including floods, fires and unseen threats, Rogers suggests a breakdown in reality. This theme is expressed most noticeably in the anxiety contained in his narratives, and more subtly in the dissolution of the representational fabric of his pictures. We find a section of the interior depicted in Facing Annihilation unexpectedly sanded down to reveal the bare wood of its support; and a slice of the landscape background in Nailed, appears to peel off, an illusion that underscores the artifice of the picture. As Rogers characterizes contemporary states of mind, he also tests his medium’s ability to convey the immediacy of our experiences.

> The Fancy of Babes is KATIE MILLER’s first solo exhibition with the gallery. Relentlessly pushing the realist technique toward hyper-realism, Miller creates artistic characterizations of the consumer-driven hype that fuels the commercial sexualization of children. The artist orders her toddler subjects according to hieratic compositions seen in Renaissance masterpieces by Hans Holbein the Younger and Albrecht Dürer, among others, employing geometric principles from that period to instill her figures with the authority of holy, royal or mythological beings. The anachronistic formats interact with Miller’s exacting rendering of the children’s features and flesh, giving them an otherworldly quality. The youngsters that confront us in these paintings appear disarmingly knowing and self-possessed. This effect is amplified by their attributes, belly button rings and “bling-bling-binky” pacifiers, inspired by Bratz Babyz dolls, and other widely marketed children’s products. Even the kids’ pets - a purse dog, a Cremello horse and a hairless cat - appear to have been bred to exaggerated points of curvaceousness. In her three largest panels, Miller poses the toddlers’ full-length figures in extremely graceful positions that seem to defy anatomy and gravity. Their precarious beauty figures the challenges of balancing childhood with forced adulthood in today’s consumer culture.

Conner Contemporary Art is also pleased to announce “Plunder,” a special *gogo projects installation created by Lauren Adams for our courtyard. Adams’ work was inspired by Elizabethan colonial era textiles, such as pirate flags and clothing depicted in portraits of Queen Elizabeth I and the explorer Sir Walter Raleigh. Adams appropriates decorative patterning from the time of sea based exploration to suggest a critique of capitalism’s colonial past. Pairing pirate flags with courtly dress, the artist asserts that pirate culture arose not only from rogue sailors who plundered other ships for transatlantic trade goods, but also from the colonizers who 'plundered' North American native wealth.

There will be an opening night reception, Saturday, September 10th from 6 to 8pm.

Artists in attendance.

Your Duty

So what's the first thing you do when you turn your computer on after being away for a coupla days?

I hope it's update your antivirus.

Antivirus programs are so good today that unless you fail to update them they'll keep your machine bug free and humming along like a Singer. But they can't do that if you don't do your part.

Now you may remember I have been away from my own machine for two weeks. (The Boss let me use her's the last few days cause I was too pitiful to walk back into the other room.) Today I cranked it up and sure enough it was sixteen days out of date. No longer, I downloaded the new definitions and installed them and now my old steam-powered machine is as well protected as any of the sleek laptops running around the SWOCC campus.

No, I still can't sit at the keyboard very long, just don't have the stamina yet, but if I could the machine would be ready.

So remember, when you leave your computer for a day or two, update on arrival. It's the easiest way to avoid a trip to the shop and keep Old Faithful ready for when you need him!

Speeding Bus

Open letter to all South Coast Trawler readers:

If you haven’t noticed the posting to the Trawler has been very erratic for the last two weeks. That’s because I had a sudden and unexpected attack of gall stones. Not to be too dramatic, but this was the “speeding bus.” I never saw it coming and it hit pretty hard.

Writing a blog is blind business; you make up a new post each day and wait to see if anyone is going to read it. From time to time people send in postings they want to see go up so you know that they are watching, but beyond that it is hard to tell if you are reaching anyone.

Try missing a few days and the response will shock you, it did me. Distinguished artists, prominent galleries, teaching studios, folks who ought to be far too busy to bother have flooded the Trawler inbox with words of support and encouragement.

And in the end, I am back at the keyboard pecking out one more post (Okay not just one more, but the sound was better if you say one.)

And this post is a great, big, happy face to all of the artists and merchants who sent in their kind words and best wishes. Thank you one and all, I cannot express how much this meant to me and my long-suffering, lady wife, who has had the worry and chores to deal with while I lay like a beached jelly-fish.

The South Coast has the most cohesive, supportive arts community in Oregon. It means a lot to be a part of that community.

Susan Lehman's "Telling A Story With Collage"

There are a few places left in Susan Lehman's collage class on Friday, August 19th from 10-4 pm at Second Street Gallery.

If you have always been interested in collage, this is a great class for learning the basics; if you are experienced in collage, Susan has some great tips for composition and techniques you can add to your repertoire. Her classes are always different so if you have taken this class before, you can be sure there are new ideas that will be explored!

Susan will be sharing image transfer techniques that just might be what you need to make your family photos part of a narrative collage!

Acrylic paints and mediums will be used for layering with exotic paper and glazes; you will be working on at least three small collages throughout the day. We will break for lunch to let some things dry. You are welcome to try out some of the local restaurants or you can bring your lunch. There will be coffee and hot water for tea.

Everything is provided in the class fee of $55; come dressed for mess and a fun day full of art play! Susan has handouts of her instructions and suggestions for material resources.

Susan Lehman has been teaching professionally since the 70's and collage particularly for the past ten years. It is her medium of choice and she is constantly developing new approaches.

You can contact Second Street Gallery to pre-register at 541-347-4133 or if you have questions about the class, you can email Susan at studioblue@mycomspan.com

“Art As Improvisation”

Sage Place announces a special workshop, “Art As

Improvisation,” taught by California artist, Sas Colby,

on September 30 & October 1st in Bandon, OR. Sas Colby is a

master teacher with forty years of experience exhibiting

and teaching art.

“Art As Improvisation,” a fast paced workshop, will lead

participants through a variety of exercises designed to

jumpstart the creative process. Colby believes it’s

necessary to get the mind out of the way to allow the

artist’s true potential to flourish, so for the first 3

hours her students are immersed in a dizzying world of

materials and directions that lay the groundwork for

exciting art making. On the second day of the workshop

participants will be guided in creating individual works

based on the techniques and concepts presented the day

before. These could take the form of artists books, or

drawings or paintings.

While the techniques taught include drawing, painting, and

sculptural concepts, the emphasis is on getting to the

essence of the art making impulse. Colby also teaches

participants how to talk about their art intelligently,

introducing critical criteria to elevate and encourage

dialog.

Sage Place director, Anne Sobbota, says this is a rare

opportunity for local artists to work with Sas, whose

workshops usually take place in exotic locales such as

Mallorca, Spain; France; and Taos, New Mexico. Her

workshops are highly valued as breakthrough experiences by

their participants. For more information on the art of Sas

Colby, go to http://www.sascolby.com

Update, News and Stuff

I have nothing against painters, sculptors, potters or weavers, I just happen to be a photographer and being one I subscribe to the usual glossy, add-filled magazines, no Virginia I don't just look at the glossy, semi-nekkid girls I read the articles. And in this month's Shutterbug I found several which apply to photographer, painter, sculptor and carver alike. Fortunately you don't have to subscribe to the magazine because they have a wonderful website where for absolutely nothing at all you can read the good stuff and take away the parts which apply to your discipline and ignore the parts which do not.

And for starters, I found this item about Copyrights complete with model release.

http://www.shutterbug.com/

The full article can be read at this link if you want more than a passing glance at the Copyright thingy.

http://www.shutterbug.com/content/copyrights-privacy-rights-update-vital-issue

Now if you burn with an unrequited yearning for more information on Copyrights, take this link to the ASMP, American Society of Media Photographers where you will find a bullet-proof model release and a simplified model release and you will be armed with enough legal firepower to survive the French Revolution!

http://asmp.org/tutorials/simplified-model-release.html

The full-flavored model release is at this link...

http://asmp.org/tutorials/adults-model-release.html

And while you are there take a look at the articles on working with light in portraiture.

http://www.shutterbug.com/category/portraiture

You may not use all, you may not use any. but it never hurts to have a refresher on where the heck the light is coming from and what are you going to do about it and what color is the stuff anyway. Take a look and see if you've forgotten any of this since the dim, long forgotten days in art school when you had to study light to shade that damned ball so that it look round.

Good resources are hard to come by and I have read a bunch of slick magazine articles over the years. This one has the goods and you won't be hurt by reading any of them, Who knows, you might get so much out of it you bookmark the site. You might even wind up subscribing to the magazine, but don't say I didn't warn ya.

“Art As Improvisation,”

Sage Place announces a special workshop, “Art As Improvisation,” taught by California artist, Sas Colby, on September 30 & October 1st (from 10-4 each day) in Bandon, OR. Sas Colby is a master teacher with forty years of experience exhibiting and teaching art.
“Art As Improvisation,” a fast paced workshop, will lead participants through a variety of exercises designed to jumpstart the creative process. Colby believes it’s necessary to get the mind out of the way to allow the artist’s true potential to flourish, so for the first 3 hours her students are immersed in a dizzying world of materials and directions that lay the groundwork for exciting art making. On the second day of the workshop participants will be guided in creating individual works based on the techniques and concepts presented the day before. These could take the form of artists books, or drawings or paintings.

While the techniques taught include drawing, painting, and sculptural concepts, the emphasis is on getting to the essence of the art making impulse. Colby also teaches participants how to talk about their art intelligently, introducing critical criteria to elevate and encourage dialog.

Sage Place director, Anne Sobbota, says this is a rare opportunity for local artists to work with Sas, whose workshops usually take place in exotic locales such as Mallorca, Spain; France; and Taos, New Mexico. Her workshops are highly valued as breakthrough experiences by their participants. For more information on the art of Sas Colby, go to www.sascolby.comFor information on the workshop, “Art As Improvisation,” contact Sage Place at: (541)329-0303 or sageplace525@gmail.com.

It cost $190 for the two day workshop plus a $10 materials fee; the deadline for registration is August 20th. A $50 deposit will hold your spot! An informal lunch will be provided.

IT’S TIME FOR ART

Second Street Gallery continues its August art program

“It’s Time for Art” by focusing on the arts through

demonstrations, exhibits and workshops.

The “Meet & Greet the Artist” program continues

featuring Jan Payne, local stained glass artist this weekend

on Saturday and Sunday. Jan has had her work displayed at

the gallery this year and will demonstrate her techniques

while answering questions about the glass she uses and how

she designs her artwork.

Mike Ousley has a show of his most recent work which

continues for the entire month. Mike takes the creative

process to new highs by breaking out of established patterns

to present art in a new light. His bold use of color is

truly eye-catching. This is demonstrated by one of his

favorite quotes from Degas, “Art is really a battle”.

Workshops in digital photography, color pencil drawing,

weaving, felting, watercolor, oil painting and collage are

also running during the month of August. They feature Oregon

artists Richard Rahmlow, Gay Holland, Yvonne Ousley &

Barbara Ferguson, Sandra McDonald, Jane Hardgrove, J M

Steele and Susan Lehman.

The gallery is located at 210 Second Street in old town

Bandon and is open daily from 10 AM until 5PM. For

additional information and schedules you can call the

gallery at 541-347-4133 or visit their website at

"Mysteries and Magic" artists' reception

Local Watercolor Artist Donna Wright will be making a splash at SAGE Gallery, in Bandon, this month.  Donna's innovative and experimental technique of "pouring on the color" is the highlight of the August exhibit, "Mysteries and Magic in Watercolor:  Featuring the work of Donna Wright and Her Students."

Perfecting this unique and creative approach to watercolor painting has been the focus of Donna's 40 year career as an artist and teacher.  With many awards, collected works, and publications to her name, Donna Wright will soon add featured "Alternative Process artist in North Light Books', Splash #13", to her list of accomplishments.

Vibrant, inspiring, and intriguing, these one-of-a kind works by Donna and her students consist of "pouring" watercolor pigments onto the paper, then manipulating the colors to create a background.  Once the "pour" is complete, the imagination of the artist is called upon to visualize and bring to life the innate subject matter that magically appears in the works.  After 20 years of teaching at the college level, in both California and at SOCC, North Bend, Donna has inspired hundreds of artists to view the world of watercolor painting with fresh eyes.  Students exhibiting work alongside Donna are:   Toni Ann Brend, Linda Robertson, Jean Boynton, Patricia Soltys, Denise Hunter, Erika Fare, Vanessa Jorgensen, Joy Bradford, Jean Kyle,  and Bonnie Hutton.

The Public is invited to SAGE Gallery for a demonstration of Donna Wright's unique process beginning at 12 pm on Saturday, August 13th; following the demo is an artists' reception from 2-5pm, to which the public is also invited. In addition to the "Mysteries and Magic" exhibit, SAGE is also delighted to feature photographic works by Bandon artists, Susan and Steve Dimock, and the continued presentation of Etch Art, by Oregon City artist Jeannie Hemming.  All work is on exhibit at SAGE Gallery, 390 First St. SW, Bandon, through Sept. 4th.  Gallery hours for this exhbit are:  Thursdays, 2-6 pm, Fridays, 4-8pm, Saturdays, 2-6 pm, and Sundays, 12-4 pm.  Additional works by Donna Wright may also be viewed at Sage Place on 11th St in Bandon.  Call (541) 329-0303 for information.

p.s. Umpqua Valley Arts Assn. has posted pictures of the winning paintings from the First Annual Plein Air Painting Competition held in July, along with some pictures and other items at the following link: http://uvarts.com/uvaa-current-events/umpqua-plein-air/

I recommend all those interested in plein air painting to attend the event next year. It was fun, and great to see all those paintings produced in one day, hanging altogether.

Celebrate Arts! 2011

Competition Goes Digital This Year

Register Now for September Digital Workshops

The Friends of the Florence Events Center are proud to present our annual juried art show, “Celebrate Arts! 2011.” We are excited to bring a juried art show to the community once a year for the many benefits it provides the gallery, the artists and the gallery audience.

Celebrate Arts! will celebrate FEC’s 15th year in 2011 by having all art work submitted to the competition in digital form. For complete show information and instructions for submitting your art, click here: http://www.eventcenter.org/celebrate-arts/

To help artists prepare for the digital submission process, workshops will be held at FEC on September 11 and 12. Workshop registration runs through August 26. Space is limited so please register early. Click here to download the online registration form. Registration forms are also available at the Florence Events Center, Digital Dunes Photography, and the Siuslaw Library. Cost is $25.

The workshop session is two hours long. Scheduled times are 9 - 11 a.m., 11 a.m. - 1 p.m., 2 - 4 p.m., and 4 - 6 p.m. on both days.

The workshops will provide details of how to take and upload digital images. Local photographers Curt Peters, Rob Welles, and Stephanie Ames will photograph art, burn it to a CD and teach workshop participants how to upload it.

Work to be photographed must be for entry in Celebrate Arts! 2011 and is limited to four pieces. All work should be unframed.

In addition to photographing art work for the 2011 show, there will be a workshop on how to photograph artwork for future shows and exhibits. This workshop will focus on how to use a “point and shoot” camera to get the best possible results. Attendees must bring their camera and user’s manual.

For more information about the workshops and this year's Celebrate Arts competition, call 541.997.1994. www.eventcenter.org/celebrate.htmlReply to:
