Calling Becky Nankivell

Folk Society Contra Dance November 3, New Dancers Welcome

On Saturday evening, November 3, the South Coast Folk Society will host a public Contra Dance in Coos Bay.  All are welcome to this special event which features live music by the popular Daytimers Band, and great calling by Becky Nankivell of Central Point. The Contra Dance will be held at the Coos Bay Senior Center Dance Hall, located at 4th and Ingersoll, from 7-10PM. Contra dancing is a light-hearted form of social dancing that is easy to learn and fun for all ages.  Singles, couples and families can all enjoy this exciting new form of dance.  New dancers are always welcome.  No experience or partner necessary.  Wear comfortable clothing as contra dancing is quite aerobic and great exercise.

The Folk Society is pleased to welcome back The Daytimers, an exciting local band, to play dance music for three hours, from 7-10PM.  The Daytimers play a lively mix of Celtic, old timey, and modern contra tunes.  Seven local musicians combined their talents to form this vibrant band.  These musicians are Don Berg on guitar, Jennifer Sordyl, Hege Bakken and Alayne Olmsted on fiddles, Karen Olsen on concertina, Davy Sweetman on penny whistle and bodhran, and Dave Williams on mandolin.  Come swing your partner to their wonderful tunes.

The Folk Society has arranged for a skilled guest caller from Central Point, Becky Nankivell, to guide dancers throughout the evening.  She will teach all the steps and patterns you need to know.  Becky Nankivell is a longtime lover of traditional music and dance, and has been a singer, player, dancer, caller, teacher, and organizer.  She has been calling contra dances on the west coast since 1991.  Becky will make beginners feel right at home while keeping it fun for the veteran dancers. There will be a lesson at 7PM, and first-timers who show up for this lesson will receive a ticket for free admission to their next dance.  Wear your dancing shoes, casual clothes, and a big smile.

This event is alcohol and fragrance free.  Refreshments are available.  Doors open at 6:45PM.  Admission: General=$7; Seniors 60+=$6; Members=$5; Students are always free, and Supervised Children under 6 are also free. For more information call 541-404-8267 or visit www.southcoastfolksociety.com.

This is an international dance festival, open to the public, with a dance workshop in the afternoon taught by Stacy Rose from 3-5:30, and a dance party in the evening with Kef playing music from 7-10.

The five musicians in the Kef Dance Band have honed their talent over the past twelve years playing for audiences from Seattle to San Francisco.  The band features Cody Simmons on trumpet, Nisha Calkins-Godfrey on cello, Alex Lowe on trumpet, Sharon Rogers on accordion, tambura, and vocals, and Ken Sokolov on percussion.  Their music is infused with energy and grace.  Its distinctive sound is delightful.  Kef plays a wonderful variety of dance music from around the world.  From Balkan village folk melodies to lively Israeli horas, all their music is a joy to hear and a pleasure to dance to.

Stacy Rose is a skilled professional dance instructor who has been lovingly teaching dances from around the world for over ten years. Her workshop on Saturday afternoon at the Harding Learning Center will introduce dancers to the beauty of Balkan village dances.  It runs from 3PM to 5:30PM and is open to the public.  No prior experience is necessary.  Stacy will teach all the steps and patterns required to enhance everyone’s enjoyment of the evening dance party.

Everybody Dies

So It Goes Coffeehouse presents an original stage adaptation of horror cult camp sensation MURDER PARTY by the Lab of Madness.
EVERYBODY DIES
It's Halloween night in Brooklyn. Chris, a lonesome and unremarkable fellow, finds a mysterious invitation on the street and follows it to what he thinks will be a fun costume party. It turns out to be a lethal trap set by a gang of deranged hipster artists who plan to lure someone to their remote warehouse base and ritually murder them as part of an extreme artistic event to impress their wealthy and sinister guru/patron. As the booze-and-drug-fueled night wears on, rivalries within the group flare and chainsaws rage...
MURDER PARTY is for audience members 18 years of age and over and features Amanda McNulty, Michael Pedder, Joe Allen, Dylon Bessey, Taylor Marchant, Maxwell Freeman, Marissa Marchant, and Nothus Rex as Chris the Brown Knight. Directed by John Beane and Daneal Doerr.
Performances are October 19-31, Fri/Sat/Sun at 8pm with two special performances at 7pm & 11pm on Halloween. Tickets are $15 and are available at the shop or online at soitgoescoffee.com. Performances take place at So It Goes Coffeehouse, 190 Central Ave, Coos Bay, Oregon.
MURDER PARTY won the 2007 Slamdance festival and was the first film from Jeremy Saulnier and Macon Blair (Green Room, Blue Ruin). So It Goes Coffeehouse previously presented PULP SHAKESPEARE and DASH RIPROCK AND THE TENTACLES OF DOOM.
