Grayscapes

Shades of Gray

This is a day to curl up with a good book or a movie, some hot beverage and an old blanket and not move until the sun comes out.
But if you do that you’ll miss an opportunity to capture some of the wonders of nature. Sure everyone loves to see the vivid colors the sun brings out, the lush greens, the hot reds and yellows, all of the tints of orange and the subtle browns and blues plants hide when the light is bad. So why would anyone bundle up, cover the easel or camera with plastic and go out when the wind is howling and the rain is raining and it is just not fit for man nor beast.

Cause that’s the only time you can see the play of gray that the failing light cloaks the world in when the rains come.

Yeah, I know, I hate to get my feet wet and since my stay with the Quack last summer my thermostat is busted and the cold seeps right down into my bones and makes me shake and shiver like a wet kitten and I hate it.

I was never cold. I went my whole, misspent life with my internal cooker set on high. I used to get hate mail from the electric company. In Texas it never got cold enough to use a blanket and I had to get rid of all of my sweaters cause the good folks turned their central heat up way too high for me and wool to coexist.

Not any more and I can tell you, without hesitation why those nice, terribly polite English guys in the PBS costume dramas are always dressing for dinner, it was too cold in Wadsworth Mansion or Brighton Abby of the Colchester Grange to run around in shirt sleeves.

In truth those clever folks came up with the ascot for just such a heating emergency. See we lose a bunch of heat from the head and neck and if you plug the hole where your head pokes through the garment, (I know, I’ve never used that word in a sentence before but it just seemed proper when talking about English dressing between the Wars.), you can keep the central core a lot warmer and a warmer core translates into a warmer you and you can do it without sending off nineteen, ninety-five to the Snuggler folks who will send you a blanket made from recycled wash cloths and fitted with arm holes for which you will have to paid the shipping and handling of $29.95 plus tax.

So instead of making Billy the Barker enough money to buy a new Mercedes you could just get an ascot and wrap it around your neck and be toasty warm. Truth be told a muffler or scarf will do nicely, thank you very much and I do happen to have a few more of those since I took a trip to London back in the nineties and over there they wear scarves a bunch cause the wind and the rain are about as common parts of English weather as they are in Oregon.

So bundle up, ascot, muffler, scarf at your discretion but don’t wear a hoodie cause in Florida that’s a sure way to be mistaken for a prowler and you wouldn’t want to have to run through the rain soaked grass and weeds with some wild-eyed civil defense warden waving his flashlight and yelling. That’s sure to wake the neighbors and you know how easily frightened they can be.

Now where were we? Oh yes, the glories of gray.

In addition to rain and wind we have a lot of water around here and there is nothing which takes to gray better than water. Sure blue is the traditional color for water but you’re going to have to use that for sky anyway so why not make the water gray? Those pewter shadows across the sandbars can make for a very thoughtful and somber picture. Remember Gothic has been around for a long time and where would Jane Eyre be without it or Lord Byron for that matter and Mary Shelley practically invented the wind tossed moor, so don’t think there’s no interest in gray and gloom.

I mean think about this, would we still remember and read Sherlock Holmes if he had chased that afoot game across the streets of San Francisco? Certainly not for the game to be afoot you need a moor and a deer stalker and maybe a meerschaum pipe or a calabash and don’t forget the gray and troubled skies.

What about Bulwer-Lytton? Could there be a worst opening line contest if there had been no “dark and stormy night”? And don’t forget the World’s Greatest Novelist, Snoopy. He always starts with “It was a dark and stormy night…”

So there are plenty of reasons to get a few mood paintings/pictures under your belt.

Now you do have to think about this for a bit or you will wind up on KVAL news. Use your camera even if you are a painter. It is so much easier to roll down the window and take a quick shot form inside the nice, warm, dry car than it is to brave the elements and risk pneumonia and a lightning strike.

Later in the safety of your studio you can paint that scene from the print and still be an authentic artists and dray all at the same time.

Watch out for glare. It may seem odd but there is nothing like the glassy gray surface of troubled waters for sending out horrendous glare and flashback. Try this, take the camera out of Auto mode and use the manual settings. Take the F/stop down a notch or two. (Yes, you can, your camera probably has a button
marked +/- so that you can downshift a stop or two without having to actually know what you are doing.

A coupla stops and you’ll get some great shadows and a lot of amazing color. That’s right all of that gunmetal hides a lot of color once you take a long look at it

If you’re afraid to fiddle too much with your settings try this, the selector wheel on the top of the camera probably has a Nat setting or an Auto with a lightning bolt symbol. That’s for natural light and it lets you shoot like a tourist while taking advantage of the great shades the unsettled weather can bring.

Why am I still talking? Don’t read another word or scan another paragraph. Get out there and take your pictures and then brew up some Blue Mountain and put on your fuzzy slippers. There’s a week more of this and with an hour or two and the camera you won’t get have time to get cabin fever.

The Other Side of the Glass

What is your market?

Have you ever taken a minute out of your day to work this out?

I can’t say much about the business of art, I’ve only been at it the last six years and am still getting my feet wet, but I have been writing for fifty-four years and I can tell you the first question any book marketer is going to ask is, “Who is going to buy this?”

Now book selling is a cut-throat business. Everyone is looking for the next Harry Potter. They want to know how well you write, how quickly you write and how many years you have left to write. Come up short on any of those items and you are out of luck.

Fortunately, the business of art isn’t that competitive, yet. There are places, New York and L. A. where there are more selling artists than there are buyers and the frenzied marketing of art can be so overwhelming that the soul of art gets tossed aside.

So who is you ideal market?

You don’t paint to sell. Okay, so what do you do with all of your work? Do you store in the fifteen thousand foot warehouse you attached to your home? I’ve always had the secret suspicion that that would be the best sort of home for an artist, a 1700 square foot house with a fifteen thousand square foot warehouse attached.

The creative guys in the architecture side of art have come up with a wonderful idea; they take the empty cargo containers everyone uses to ship goods and recycle them as housing. Now the advantage as I see it is that sort of thing becomes infinitely expandable. You pluck down the three thousand dollars and get forty feet of space delivered to your site and bang you are ready to start building.

Me I have trouble operating a light switch and a flush toilet on the same day, but there are handy folks out there who can MacGyver a tuna can and some dental floss into a working airplane in less than half a day. Give them an empty container and you can have a passable shelter for the night in a coupla hours.

Now we’re talkin’! Three grand and forty feet and you can add the same space for another three grand. Even in the current depressed real estate climate the cost of housing runs about one hundred and eighty thousand dollars for a modest family home. If my math is good that’s sixty containers on your property or maybe just four or five and the help of a solid handy-man to do the interior and wiring so that the place becomes comfortable for the Long Suffering and the dog.

That’s identifying your target market, filling a need, recycling an existing product and creating a modular space with minimal economic impact. And these guys are architects.

So could you do that same? Not if you haven’t a clue who is the target buyer for your work. You hafta know.

Okay let’s start with the basics, I like people, women especially, nekkid women in particular, but in this part of the world there is not a huge market for that sort of thing. Now I could insist I’m right and everyone else is wrong and just keep cranking out my nekkid ladies, or maybe I could do something else?

That’s what I did. I tried several things when I first got out and started playing with the Big-Time, Professional, Serious Artists. I did some found art, things common to everyday life which look like something else if you squint a little and hold your head just right.

Not so popular…what else could I try?

Yeah, this is Oregon and just chock full of plants and rivers and oceans and ya gotta be blind and stupid not to notice, so I did some of that.

But the truth is the painters have it all over a photographer when it comes to doing a landscape. Okay, skyscape, seascape, boatscape, beachscape or plantscape. They just do and if you want to have a nice shiny red spot on your forehead just keep banging it against that wall.

Then I was playing around with some stuff I had in the computer and it looked kinda interesting and I did a bit of a fiddle here and a tweak there and before you know it I had something that was different and pretty good.

Good enough that I started winning, well placing, sort of far down the honors list, but placing and I said to myself, “Self, I think this fiddle and tweak thingy has potential. You should keep doing it.” And I did.

Along the way, I got some help from a pal or two. New software from the Web and from pals who had moved on to bigger and better things, a lot of time experimenting and showing and finding out what a jury is likely to like and now I have a pretty good idea just who my audience is. They like color and patterns and bold, bright images and interesting looks at common things and they haven’t made me disgustingly wealthy, yet, but I have enjoyed some success.

So do you know who you are painting for? Are you still tossing darts in the dark? Hard way to get ahead. Maybe you should take a break, get a fresh cuppa and sit down by the window and stare at the rain for a while. I find watching the rain chase across the glass peaceful and if I look long enough I frequently see what I have been missing. Might work for you too.

Framed!

It’s the plot of half of the flashing light dramas on television, the hero wrongly accused of some horrible crime has 49 minutes to find the guilty party, right the wrong, clear his name and work out a happy ending, unless it’s a bridged episode…tune in again next week.

He could, okay, okay, she could too, but you have to admit it’s awkward to say he/she could…so I’ll stick with the pronoun I grew up with and leave political correctness for younger bloggers. He could have saved himself forty-five of those minutes looking around for a guilty party by just visiting any museum or art venue. The guilt is there hung around the art like an albatross, frames, frames of the wrong size, wrong style, wrong finish and they got there through the willful disregard of the artist.

Del Smith Arch Docent and Imperial Omnipotent Stomper of the Coos Art Museum says all mats should be white or off white and the frames should be metal and black. Probably an impossibly austere view for color-crazed artists, but within reason this is a great place to start.

Remember the object here is to display your art, not put in a plug for the frame/molding maker. Now there are any number of ways you can go about focusing on this principal, discipline, good taste, recommendation or inspiration, but focus you must.

Why? Isn’t there enough to do to get your art out of your head and onto canvas, much less in a show or placed in a gallery or venue where people can come see it? There is plenty and I hear your pain, but art is hard work, if you wanted easy maybe you should have been independently wealthy.

Okay, first thing, you do know that the heavy, ornate gilt frames you see around the works of master artists in collections, museums and palaces got there years if not hundreds of years ago when oddly enough they didn’t have anything else to frame with or they were busy trying to impress the socks off the peasants or they were worried that the other Hapsburgs on the block would look down on them for having a simple frame. Keeping up with the Bourbons is a bitch, but if you are seventeenth century royalty what are you going to do?

Think about it, the masters of a more modern era, the Impressionists and later schools didn’t always frame their works at all. I’m not sure what the correct frame for a Picasso or a Pollack is and I’m pretty sure after staring at a Pollock for half a day at the Dallas Museum of Fine Art no frame would help a bit. It just doesn’t need it.

Some of the other artists of the modern ages, Mucha and Lautrec spent a large part of their careers painting posters and frankly if I had to use prints instead of originals I’d use Mucha and Lautrec, but as poster artists their works don’t have the body to fight off a heavy, gilt frame. They need the subtlety of a narrow metal frame to attract the eye, but stay out of the way.

So where do you fall on the art time line? Are you an old master from the sixteenth century or a modern master from the galleries and cafes of Paris?

I can’t answer that question. You are the one who will be doing the framing of your art work. Think about it before you saddle that delicate water color with a frame which would be more at home on the Titanic. You do remember what happened to the Titanic?

And there really is no excuse for putting the wrong frame on your art. Right here on the coast of Oregon we have two wonderful professional frame shops and that’s if you don’t travel to far Bandon or remote Coquille.

The nice folks at Easy Lane Frames and Select Gallery or The Art Connection can help you when it comes to selecting a frame. They do a wonderful job so long as you remember any time you use a commercial shop they will want to sell you something. Now I think buying local is not only the wise thing to do but it is the right thing to do, (See I managed to get a Politically Correct view in), and you should wherever possible, just don’t think you are getting a completely unbiased opinion.

You can do yourself a big favor by doing a little research on the Web before you take the ride to the frame shop.

and

both offer an online tool which will let you visualize the art in a frame and then through the magic of the Internet, you can change it in an instant. Not a bad way to take a look and see what sort of frame you might want for the next show.

If you have been out doing your proper networking chores you’ll have a Nuisance of Artists, actually that’s what you call a bunch of cats, but it seemed right for artists, all opinionated and philosophical, to ask questions about technical stuff like the right way to frame a picture.

If you haven’t been networking maybe you should start? There’s the BAAA and The Oregon Coast Photographer’s Assn and they are chock full of artists who will happily tell you what you should be doing.

So it isn’t a mission impossible to get your frame right, it takes time, effort and some help, but the rewards are worth every bit of it. Now get busy, the spring shows are just around the corner and you have to be ready!

Take the money and run…

That was the title of an old Woody Allen film and it had a lasting effect on the psyche of business in this country, they take your money and run.

Don’t believe me; have you ever tried to get service for a product or service you paid for?

Computer support has become the joke of the service industry. If you can find a working number for support, you’ll find the support center located in some other country. Now I have no objection to giving folks from another country a job, but I do wish they’d be able to speak understandable English.

Trying to help someone who is not a computer nerd with a problem over the phone is a challenge worthy of Hercules, and that’s if both of you speak the same language.

Then there’s the lurking hook of whether you have paid for that service and if you haven’t you are out of luck and if you have you’ll have to prove it because the bookkeeping skills of the computer support industry leave much to be desired.

I can’t say I’m a big fan of the automobile industry, they make cars which use too much gas, selected on the basis of what an eighteen year old thinks is neat and filled with unnecessary stuff so that the curb weight is just a pound or two less than the Titanic, and you know what became of the Titanic.

But they have gotten the message, they have been scrutinized, sanitized and penalized by the government to the point that they jump on a flaw and get it out there before the junior senator from Nebraska can call a press conference. They do recalls right and they work at making sure the customer gets some of what they paid eighty thousand dollars for so that in three years that sucker, customer will come back and buy another car from them at only one hundred and twenty thousand.

If a computer ran like a car we’d all still be using our Windows 98 systems. Microgreedy brings out a new Operating System every two years filled with nothing new or interesting and they charge a coupla hundred dollars for it and they tell you they’ll drop the old system and you can just upgrade or go whistle.

Wow! Some customer satisfaction model.

But wait there are the airlines. They seem to think that if they hold you hostage, after forcing you to pass through the time consuming and pointless air port screening at the hands of untrained minimum wage personnel, keeping you on the plane for sixteen hours without food, restroom facilities or access to your medication they have done a bang-up job.

They gasp and shake their heads when a customer complains and then they reluctantly offer you travel vouchers for trips on their air lines under the same intolerable conditions like that is fair compensation.

Ever have to call the local cable company? Better be for a channel line-up brochure, cause if it’s anything else you are in for a marathon treat. They’ll spend hours on the phone asking you the same questions in several different ways, then they’ll schedule a service appointment which they have no intention of keeping and then they’ll huff and puff and tell you it will be at least six weeks if you have the nerve to cancel it because of something silly like a death or illness.

And we not only put up with this treatment we support it by returning time after time to the same places which have abused us to buy more of their services so we can get some of that good ole indifference.

Why do you care? You are an artist, you don’t have time for television, can’t afford a car, don’t travel cause the TSA strip-searched you when you tried to board with an easel and box of brushes, couldn’t care less about cable and if you have any spare time left after getting the house cleaned and the kids fed and bedded and watered and schooled and the spouse managed and the bills paid, you spend it working on your art.

Good, cause that's what I want to talk to you about. How are you dealing with your own customer service?

Do you gloat and dance the happy dance with glee at a new commission and then go off and ignore the client’s wishes and do something you had in mind anyway?

Do you work on subjects which have no interest for the typical buyer cause you have better taste and more refined sensibilities than they do?

Do you follow all of the rules when you submit to a show and get the entry in on time and in the proper format?

If not then rejoice you are doing business the natural way, take the money and run.

But as an artist shouldn’t you give just as much consideration to the interest of the client as you do to the care with which you make your own art? Shouldn’t you work with that client to provide the best, closest, most satisfactory product you can produce? You should.

Remember the Golden Rule, no not that one although that is a good Golden Rule and it wouldn’t hurt you a bit to do unto others as you would they do unto you, but the one I mean is the old business saw, “Happy clients tell everyone they know; unhappy clients tell everyone.”

How do you want to want to show up on Twitter?

Three Little Words

The most dangerous phrase in the English language, it strikes terror in the hearts of brave men, delight in the eyes of women and sends children running form the room.
Never has more suffering, grief and pain been brought about by any other collection of words.

Why, why do we put ourselves through it? We could just admit that we don’t want to do it and walk away, but no, generation after generation has knowingly walked into the trap and sent their kids off to do the same.

Why must we be plagued with this cross?
Why is Read the Directions so hard for men to come to grips with? Now women in all fairness, do it too, but they do it by handing the new vacuum off to the spouse and walking away. Later when there is weeping and a pile of parts strewn about the living room floor she can come back and say, “Anyone else would have had it working by now and if you had to be so inept you could at least clean up after yourself.”

And with that harsh judgment men slink off to the cave to drown their sorrows in some nasty beverage or two while plotting murder.

It doesn’t really matter what the instructions are for, not reading them is the traditional method. I’m not sure if this is passed on from father to son in a secret bonding ceremony conducted at the dark of the moon with drums and chanting and the sacrifice of live stock and grain, probably where all those barbeques came from.

Whatever the cause it is pervasive.

Half of the trouble people have with filing their taxes is because they don’t read the instructions. True, they are written in Governmenteese, the most difficult and peculiar language known to man. Part of this is by intent so that our elected officials can pass things into law which have no business being there without the fear of their constituents finding out and banding together like those villagers in the old Frankenstein movies and hunting them down with burning torches and pitchforks. Part is just plain puffery. They think that if they say something which takes half an hour to read and twenty minutes more to decipher people will think it was written by someone with special skills which is of course nonsense cause any fool can be elected to Congress if he is willing to ignore common sense and community values.

But then it goes to a government agency to be edited and printed and the IRS has to add its own stamp and by the time it gets to you you have to know the basis which may or may not have been effected by your employers ESPP which buys lots of shares in fractional units and splits them among all of the participants giving the individual incremental stock dividends. Now aren’t you thrilled?

Ever try to program a TIVO? You need a Masters in Computer Science, and that’s before you read the manual, which will come in two booklets, the end user set up guide and the owner’s manual, which if you don’t put it away the minuet you get the machine set up it will be long gone by the time the power goes out and you have to know how to re-set the clock.

Want one of those i’s the Apple folks are so hot on? Getting music on an iPod is like getting the next shuttle launched except you don’t have to worry about the double secret launch codes.

Everything has instructions and most of them were originally written in Japanese. So my friends by the time you get your hands on it it has been translated no less than twice, from Japanese into English, unless the company is a big-time international company in which case you will have to sort through the French, Spanish, German and Latvian translations before you get to the English neatly folded so that when you try to go from page to page you wind up getting one page of English and the next in Portuguese.

Still you absolutely have to do it. The best training you can have is to work for the police or a tax preparation firm for a season or two. The only way to survive is to read the instructions. If you don’t you’ll wind up being on the IRS’s naughty list or getting a nice policeman in deep trouble and you wouldn’t want that.

So, Read the Directions.

You’re an artist, you had to at one time listen to someone who knew more about art than you do, they told you all of the secret moves and hidden techniques to make your work come alive. I’ll bet half of you are taking classes right now and you are following directions if you are in a class or the instructor would have thrown you out by now, so why aren’t you doing it when you aren’t in class?

Creating art is just one part of an artist’s life, presenting, selling, promoting and networking are some of the other parts and you simply have to know how to make all of them work together. If you are at home trying to make that new easel stand up and you’ve tossed the directions on the table where the head of the house has just come in from the yard and set his frosty beer on them, they’ll be hard to read. Maybe it’s a high tech goodie like an air brush you want to use to get more color or definition into your work. Did you rip it from the packing and toss the directions?

Tremble not, most of the time you can find that owner’s manual online. You’ll probably have to pay for it, but then getting something to work right has to be worth a few bucks.

Or you could just do it right the first time. Open the box, take out the directions and read them cover to cover, even the insulting safety section which tells you not to put a running lawn mower into your mouth. And then, file them carefully away so that when you need them they’ll be where you can find them.

The Summer Show: (July, August, September): “GAMES PEOPLE PLAY”

Southern Coos Hospital and Health Center, Bandon

It was Crystal Landucci’s impressive collection of games of Chinese checkers that inspired this one. We’re looking for board games of all sorts that can be mounted on the walls; your own inventions would be great too……you’ve got a little while to work on this one so start inlaying those chess boards or drilling those cribbage sets….(fashioning those dominos?)…….This should be a really fun exhibit for the summer and we hope it will combine collectibles and the fruits of your imagination.
