Not the Naughty List

You really thought you'd get through the holiday season without the Ole Trawler winging on and on about somethings you ought to think about?
Well, you were wrong.

Four days until Christmas and there are still presents you need to buy and why should you be any different from all of the rest of the country. After all there are those wasted hours between midnight and dawn when there are no football games on and you can shop in your jammies or in the nude or in the windows of your apartment if a little seasonal spirit overcomes you.

But if frightening the neighbors isn't on your naughty list then think about this.
Red River Paper

These guys have all sorts of things any artist could covet or want or lust after. There are papers for printing. Now I know you are a painter and never use a camera and couldn't care less what sort of printing papers are out there but if that is the case you are missing out on a major revenue stream. Cause what happens when you sell that latest masterpiece? Then you have nothing to show for all of your hard work. But if you took a good picture, no not one of those Neo-Polaroids from your Iphoney, but a real picture from a decent camera, then you could print it out and have a record of your work so when that big-time commission comes looking you have something to show.

Or what have you done about Christmas cards this year? Bought a bunch of Currier and Ives fakes from Rite-Aid and sent them to all of the people on your list whether you know them or not. But if you have files of your work, you could create your own cards and by buying the pre-cut card stock from Red River papers you could make your own Christmas cards and send not only genuine thoughtful seasonal sentiments and but your work, giving yourself a tasty plug while making you feel self-righteous and all done at the same time.

Or what about those prints you made of your brilliant work and now you have them lying about catching dust and creating toys for the cat when they should be carefully archived so they will be ready when Mr. Big-time comes along?

You could have ordered clear display bags. That way you don't even have to take the print out to show it and if you put down that frosty glass of IPA at Seven Devils and it happens to be on the print the bag will keep it safe and you can finish your beer without guilt.

So that's just a coupla reasons why you should look at Red River papers and I won't even mention the fact that they are one of the few places where you can buy ready to print 11 x 14 sheets cause that would just be over kill.
And now you say you don't trust online stores and there are nothing but SPAM and viruses out there so you never shop on the computer well what about our own Art Connection?

You just have to pick up the car keys and drive down to the Art Connection and there you will find all sorts of things the deserving artist needs. And you will be shopping locally which should make you feel really important and community centered.

Every artist needs a new sketch pad for the start of the year or what about some clay for that sculpture you always wanted to do but keep putting off and yes you can do a nude without being a complete perv cause you are an artist and not a guy in an overcoat with a pocket full of candy.

Start small and see if the spirit takes hold of you. You can always come back and buy more. I can promise you they will sell you as much as you need so make a lot of mistakes cause that is the only real way to learn how to do the job and you can always pass off the flops as artistic innovations.

Not into 3D art? Well there's charcoal or pastel or colored pencil. My father was a master at shading with pencils and did renderings so life-like you'd spend half a day trying to get the birds to take seeds or watering plants only to realize they were drawings and now they were all wet, but fortunately I never bring out his originals cause they are one of a kind and not replaceable but I have them on disc so when I scrap one of them I can always print off another copy and still have the original safely put away.

So why not start the Holiday Season right and get a gift for the deserving artist on your Christmas list that they will actually like and use and enjoy and respect your good taste and revere your intelligence and speak your name in hushed tone reserved for folks with images carved in stone?

A Thread of an Idea

Come Sunday. Sunday, Sunday visit the beautiful Pacific Park Gallery at 1957 Thompson Rd. craftily located just off Woodland Drive and around the corner past Kinney Drive on the way to the Bay Area Hospital which you should never need, but God Forbid you should know the way just in case but if you get there you have gone too far so look for the Pacific Park signs and the clever little sign which says Gallery Open which should give you a clue in case you don't have one.

There will be snacks and wine and art and artists and good conversation with adult people who speak in English and not Text-speak and you can refresh yourself with nary a football game in sight and that will be a change from the twenty-four straight hours of football on one hundred channels with the Thing on the couch using five remotes all at the same time and why isn't he so handy when it comes to doing the chores and taking out the trash? Never mind.

So make your plans, set the remote by the couch, put the pizza rolls in the microwave and stock the fidge with beer and chances are the Thing on the Couch will never even know you are gone.

Sunday 2-4 Pacific Park Gallery 1957 Thompson Rd for real adults only!

All There in Black and White

Weave your way to the Pacific Park Gallery's opening Sunday November 10, 2019 from 2-4PM To see the amazing fiber works and the incredible artists on display this season.

I find it hard to write complete sentences bur these artists do their best work with thread and a loom or needles. Come a feel completely inadequate and at the same time awed. So much better than wasting another Sunday fetching snacks and drinks for the Thing on the Couch, You know the Thing won't even miss you until after the Stupid Bowl in the Spring.

Another Opening, Another Show

Are you still sitting on the couch, (And what did you do with The Thing On the Couch) staring at the super wide plasma watching the beautiful baby Bears maul the grizzled old Green Bay Slackers? Well pick up your bed, er couch and walk to the amazing art displayed at the Pacific Park Gallery, this very weekend and learn something, absorb culture and fire up those weary gray cells.

The Ole Trawler himself will be on hand to welcome you and share with you his own incredible works of photographic brilliance. Just take the short walk up the stairs, cause there are photos in the stair well as well and then on the second floor you can see all of the faces which make up, Character: Them What has. A photographic essay of the wonders we walk by every day but are too absorbed in our own little dramas to see.

Then if that isn't enough here's the insightful, imaginative work of F. Gary Ostrom, gentleman artist and all about swell guy who you should take time to meet and discuss art with cause he has much to say of merit and you know that your time will be better spent than it would be watching another early season football game where the players haven't even worked of all of the lard they packed on in the off season unless they are place kickers in which case they are scared spitless cause they saw the YouTube of Carli Loyd nailing a fifty-five yard field goal through the practice goal posts which are only nine feet wide instead of the regulation eighteen feet on the first try and why haven't my beautiful baby Bears signed that girl up cause you all remember last year it was one missed filed goal that knocked Da Bears out of the play-offs.

An then, and then , and then along came Janne! I can't actually say if she is Slow walking Janne, Slow talking Janne, along came bright, bold, brilliant Janne! Ya see she is the boss of the gallery it would probably be best just to say nice things about the Honcho, but that's so easy cause when you see her art you too will be saying nice things and when you go back to the Home 20 and see the Thing on the Couch who hasn't moved and might need to have his pulse checked just to make sure he hasn't died with the remote in his hand and said he rhetorically is that the modern equivalent of dying with your boost on, but I digress so when you see the Thing on the Couch you can tell him all about the amazing, wonderful and enlightening art on display at the Pacific Park Gallery and remind him that if he had put on pants and brushed his teeth he too could have seen the art, enjoyed the intellectual environment and snagged some killer snacks all while listening to the Little Match Girls play the top 40 of 1756.

Now are you still interested in that silly football game, which isn't actually played with feet cause then it would be soccer and the United States National Women's Second consecutive World Cup winning Super Stars would be playing and everyone would be staying at home to watch America's team cause they are the real stars of any game, but since they don't play again until October you have no excuse not to be at Pacific Park Gallery, this very Sunday, September the 8th from 2-4 for the reception and to meet the incredible artists on display with no annoying Liberty Mutual Limu commercials to distract from the art.

Grrl Power

Please join us for an inspiring show featuring the work of four talented women.  It will be 2-4 p.m. on Sunday September 8th.  The show we remain at Black Market Gourmet through the end of October.  If you are unable

Samaras/Samsara

Last month for me to be 76....have spent this year contemplating the spirit of revolution as well as the wisdom of the I Ching/ the Book of Changes.  Asking about this exhibit I got:#52/ KEN/ The Mountain/ Keeping Still (Meditation)——turning into #30/ LI- Fire, the Clinging( clarity, illumination, devotion, synergy).  Will bring my books and pennies on the 16th for anyone who would like to consult the ancient oracle, which was part of the process of creating this series of winged maple seed paintings (“SAMARAS/ SAMSARA”)

Observe Observations

As Homes said to Watson, "You see, but you don't observe."

Don't be like Watson, it's elementary Come and let people with real talent do the heavy lifting for you. (And some not so talented but one clearly gifted conman)

Come and meet the artists and see why they found these images so compelling.

Then you'll have something interesting to talk about at all of the end of summer parties!

You can't always count on running into Charles, sometimes you will have to start a conversation yourself and wouldn't you rather have a really smart, interesting and cultural thing to talk about instead of the glorious United States Women's National Soccer Team's fantastic World Cup victory or Brexit or AOC's latest Twitter comment? See you can be the brilliant raconteur at every occasion for just half a day at Pacific Park Gallery's  Observations show!

And you can even see what the Ole Trawler does when he is not wasting time on the Internet.

Earthly Delights (Your mother can know about!)

Come early for Macaw feather earings and support a poor suffering bird with sinus trouble so he can spread his wings and swear like a sailor. It's both cultural and educational. Where else would school children hear such language? Do you want them to pick it up in the school yard?

Unpaid Undeterred

Helping our Coast Guard Neighbors

Many have been concerned about how to best help those in our community who provide needed services to us on a daily basis and who are negatively impacted by the government shutdown.  We found out today that assistance can be provided to those who are in the Coast Guard and are in need through the Chief Petty Officers Association.  It’s a non-profit located at the North Bend sector and they are allowed to take donations and distribute them to the Coast Guard members that need them the most. If you would like to mail a check or money order or a gift card, please address your envelope to Chief Petty Officer Association, North Bend Sector, 2000 Connecticut Avenue, North Bend, Oregon 97459.

The Chief Petty Officers Association here in North Bend can take donations for any sector that you would like so please specify whether you are wishing it to go to the North Bend sector, or the Coos Bay Small Boat sector.  Mr. Sweetman has already contacted all the different sectors and composed a list of the Coast Guard members most needing help.
