International Success

Thanks to Susan Lehman’s international intrigues, the South Coast art enclave has gone virtual with representatives in the International Collage Exchange. Susan Lehman, Pat Snyder and Nan Forsberg-Hammons are our own home-grown, world-wide celebrity artists and Serena Rossi from Coast to Post mail art show, recently in Bandon, also made it into the mix.

There are two galleries on the site, the one on your left as you face the screen, is the permanent collection and the one on the right, as you face the screen, is the selling exhibition.

http://virtual.tart.co.nz/exhibit3/ice87.htm

This will take you to the site and let you roam around being awed and stunned by the work or if you are in a hurry or just so intimidated that you want a quick peek and then run for the hills, the work of our own master artists can be found:

http://virtual.tart.co.nz/exhibit3/ice89.htm

First up, Nan Forsberg-Hammons.

http://virtual.tart.co.nz/exhibit3/ice74.htm

This is the work of Susan Lehman, no surprise to find her among this respected group.

http://virtual.tart.co.nz/exhibit3/ice89.htm

And Pat Snyder rounds out the Bay Area honors.

And in case you’ve forgotten or didn’t get to see the Coast to Post event, Serena Rossi’s work is at this link.

http://virtual.tart.co.nz/exhibit1/ice3.htm

It is clear that South Coast artists can hold their own in a world-wide competition and because of the efforts of dedicated individuals, like Susan Lehman they often get the chance.

And if that doesn’t drive you back to the studio to redouble your efforts then you need some serious Geritol rations. South Coast artists are everywhere and with a bit of effort and your own unquestioned talent you can join them.

And yes, a thank you to Susan for bringing the opportunity to our attention wouldn’t be such a bad idea either. Kudos Susan, Pat and Nan, ya done good, again.

Everybody’s Fine

If you missed Everybody’s Fine in the madness of the holiday season, now might be a good time to go back and take a look. What in the heck does a seasonal movie have to do with art and artists?

That’s a really good question and unlike those guys in Washington who dodge and weave at the mere hint of a sentence with a tonal upturn at the end, I have an answer. (What’s a tonal upturn? Haven’t you seen Rio Bravo? Walter Brennan explains it all to John Wayne, “It were a question. You could tell because my voice went up at the end.”)

Everybody’s Fine is a film about a widower and his family. The man’s wife was the glue; she stayed in touch with the kids and kept everybody linked and when she dies the family just falls away as families do. The husband sets out to reconnect with his kids and to rebuild the family.

So what and when does it get to the art part? In the process of trying to rebind the emotional ties and relight the fires of love and kinship the man discovers the healing power of art and the magic the right words can have.

Now I won’t quote the line, ‘cuz you should see if for yourself, but you want to be an artist not a painter, trust me. And remember great, powerful, emotional art can be made from everyday things, it doesn’t have a theme or an agenda, it is often made by scared people desperately trying to make the rent and from that fear and passion and yes desperation, the great art flows.

I couldn’t say that this is a great film, it won’t shake the ground from under the epics of the past nor burn a permanent spot in your memory, but it is a tough, thoughtful film and every artist owes themselves the opportunity to see why art has lasted from the caves of France to the galleries of today.

And no in spite of the healing this family receives from a simple painting, I won’t dedicate my efforts to pictures of…gee I almost gave it away, didn’t I, better quit while I’m ahead. Go see or rent and understand why this isn’t a holiday flick, it all about the art.

Art Information by Ava Richey

Hi Everyone,

We will meet at Old Town Pizza on Monday, March 29th, from 12-3 p.m. It's located next to the 'Welcome to Old Town' sign, at the corner of 2nd and Delaware, in Bandon's Old Town.

If the weather is wonderful and you want to paint outdoors, they have tables outside, or you can go around the corner to the waterfront, etc.

We had a good painting session at Heritage Place last week. The view from the various decks and light on the clouds, etc. were pretty amazing. We are fortunate to live amid such beautiful scenery.

See you at Old Town Pizza. My phone is 347-4643 or cell is 297-6118 if you have questions.
Thanks!

Portfolio Part Too

Still not ready to trust your precious pictures to a computer? Well, you’re in luck, stop by Easy Lane Frame and Select Gallery and talk to Ken and Jane Snoddy about their miniature Giclees.

Yes, you heard miniature Giclee, complete with certificate of authenticity all in one convenient place ready for your small, but so correct portfolio. No more lugging around a case the size of a 1951 Buick. Get Jane and Ken to work up a dozen of these little beauties and you can carry your most unforgettable art wherever you go.

Even if you are just recording your work for your private collection these perfect, tiny jewels will sparkle and make you rich in deed.

So what are you waiting for? Now’s there’s no excuse for letting your work go without a record of what you have labored so hard to produce. Saddle up podnuh, you’re burnin’ daylight.

The Portfolio Disc

I’ve always thought if they want to have a “real” Survivor show take a dozen and a half artists, load them down with a portfolio case and a list of art directors and turn them lose in Manhattan on a hot summer day. Anyone who makes all the calls and lives to makes it back to the Holland tunnel wins. They have to still have their portfolio case to qualify.

Painters aren’t you lucky, you’ve probably never had to do this, but for photographers it’s a way of life, if you want to make it in the commercial world. You need a case big enough to haul a dozen, painfully selected, board-mounted, 16 x 20 glossies. It has to be tough enough to survive rides on the subway, bike mounted thieves and changes in the weather. And when the day is done, unlike the fantasy Survivor, you get to do it all again.

Thank goodness for the computer. With a Windows system, a blank disc and a bit of time you can create a pocket-sized portfolio, which will carry a hundred not so painfully selected photos. And the cost is so cheap when you find someone interested in your work you can smile and say, “Keep it; you might want to sleep on it and take another look in the morning.” You can do that because your name, address and phone number are on the disc, all that and your website, blog, your dog’s name, two dozen cute little emoticons and a note from your mother. Slip that in a paper disc holder and you’ve got a marketing manager in your pocket. You can burn a dozen just like it and hit every place in the area in the same afternoon and no giant, heavy, expensive portfolio case to haul.

But wait, there’s more, what if you are a sculpture or a potter or a wood worker or yes, even a painter. Yes, painters can carry their work in their pockets just like the shiftless photographers do.

But you don’t photograph your work. Why not? There is no greater sin than for an artist to allow their work to leave without having a record. What do you do when someone says, “What can you show me?” Well, there are the pieces I have on display in Roseburg or the three that went to the museum in Portland or the sculpture I have in the juried show in L.A., but no I’ve got nothing here. Or what if you are one of the lucky ones and you sell your work as fast as you create it? Think that doesn’t happen? Check with Kimberly Wurster or Jardin Kazar, but then they’re too busy creating new art and may not answer the telephone. What do you have to show for all of your hard work?

You have a portfolio disc if you’ve been reading this. Now don’t start whining and say that you don’t know anything about computers and you don’t have a digital camera, half of the cell phones in the country have cameras and a bad picture is better than an empty hand. If you are running XP or later Windows systems making a disc is easy. Just load a clean disc in the drive, go to the folder with your pictures click on the ones you want, (If you are doing more than one you’ll have to hold down the control key while you keep clicking), look over at the menu on the left and click on the Copy To CD command. On my machine it’s the last one in the window. And Bob’s your uncle it’s done. How easy was that?

And now that you’ve done it, don’t leave home without it.
Let me ask you something, what is not art? ~Author Unknown

“Those who can’t do, teach.”

Yeah, who says? Not anyone who has been to the Southern Coos Hospital to see the show “Teachers”, from the moment you enter the building until you reach the student self-portraits, you are immersed in very fine art.

(Subjectivity disclaimer), all art impressions are inherently subjective. No matter how determined, educated, skilled or impartial the reviewer tries to be the effect of art is purely in the eye and mind of the viewer, (You thought I was going to say beholder, didn’t you?) So if you want an unbiased review of the “Teachers” show you should probably find another source. If not just go and see the show and form your own opinions. And you’d better hurry, the show went up in January and is scheduled to come down at the end of this month, so run, don’t walk to the Southern Coos Hospital while you still have a chance.

Don’t wait to look, start when you walk through the doors. Jane Snoddy and Pat Snyder have works in the entryway and they are worth stopping for, slowing down for, taking a long, hard look for and it will be well worth it. It makes getting inside so you can see the body of the show even more important.

Once inside you will see many of the usual suspects, Jane Snoddy, Pat Snyder, Susan Lehman and Angela Haseltine Pozzi, and a handful of delightful surprises. Now I’m not saying that Jane Snoddy’s Adobe Magic, Survivors by Angela Haseltine Pozzi, Torn by Susan Lehman or Etching Table by Pat Snyder are chopped liver, the very opposite, gifted, talented and creative artists working at the top of their craft, producing works that make the mind churn and the eye freeze and it isn’t the first rodeo for any of them. Unfortunately excellence is the minimum we expect from these guys. They are just that good.

The real treasure of the show is art work from guys we don’t know so well or at least don’t know as artists. There’s the subtle and richly toned Moving Mag, Log 1 and 2 from Anne Sobbota, who does teach thank you ever so much and does do, big surprise, and in her spare time, those wasted hours between midnight and dawn she runs a little place called Sage Gallery. Photography isn’t art or so I’m told, but take a look at Josie Reid’s Bamboo Series and Yucca Series and see if you can still agree, looks like art to me, but I did mention, I’m subjective. And just so you don’t think I’m partial to the ladies, John Bealey’s Woman, hidden in the hallway by the convenience facilities, will make you feel like you’re standing on a Paris street around the turn of the last century, (no, not the one that just happened, the last last century.)

I could go on, but that might tempt you to read instead of going, for no word can express what art does, it is the food that feeds the mind, pleasures the eye and sooths the soul, so put down that remote and hurry, there are only days left. Look at all of it, from the gift shop to the canteen, there’s treasure everywhere, like Rose and Impression and the student self-portraits and well just go, see for yourself.

We Noticed

Anyone notice how many times when something important happens in the art enclave of the South Coast Victoria Tierney’s name is attached to it? No? You do remember the Oregon Prison Art show at the Coos Art Museum, which was so successful it spilled over to the Black Market Gourmet. That was Victoria’s doing. And now less than a month after the Oregon Prison Art show closes Victoria steers the 44th Annual Transparent Water Color Traveling Exhibit to the Sage Gallery.

Of course Anne Sobbota, art historian, gallery owner, exhibit manager and all around professional genius, does quiet well on her own and when the two forces of nature Anne and Victoria get together how could anyone resist?

And who benefits from this sort of activism, everyone who lives and works in the South Coast art enclave. Artists resist joining. It’s just not in their nature. Creating anything is a solitary business. It takes all of the energy, drive and sweat an artist can manage just to get the idea from the spark in the mind into the wood or clay or on the canvas.

And what is left after all that sweat and strain? If you are one of the artists who make a big difference in our environment, plenty, somehow they mange to dredge up the will to go out and scare up the resources, find the right people to harangue, harass and pester to get the show sent to their locale, they make things happen for all of us and do we notice?

Usually no.

So before you move on to the next project, work of art or show submission, take a minute to say thank you to the dedicated artists who find the time and make use of their talents to enrich the art experience for all of us. Thank you Ms Tierney, we noticed.

44th ANNUAL TRANSPARENT WATERCOLOR TRAVELING EXHIBIT

SAGE Gallery is very pleased to have been invited to host the 44th Annual Transparent Watercolor Traveling Exhibit! We are so grateful to Victoria Tierney who arranged, with the Watercolor Society of Oregon, to make SAGE the final destination for these fantastic works!

The 21 works on exhibit were selected from over 350 in a juried event, 80 pieces were then displayed in McMinnville and a final 21 were selected to travel to various venues in Oregon. This exhibit will be on display during the entire month of March. We are delighted to have been selected as a site for this incredible showing!

Hi Everyone,

Thanks to Sarita for providing a wonderful painting day last Monday. Beautiful day and place, and the resulting paintings were impressive.

Heritage Place (Assisted Living), has invited us to come back and paint up on the 3rd floor overlooking the Bandon South Jetty, river and ocean. There is a community room with tables to paint at, and an outside deck. Also a couple of alcoves, and another small outside area on the east side of the building. Or if the weather allows, and you could paint down on the grounds, or at the jetty then join us in the building at 2:30 for critique.

You can paint at the tables, or set up easels inside or out, but bring a floor covering to put under your easel if painting inside please. Please bring your lunch and beverage.

Parking is in the back (south side) and east side of the building. It is easiest to enter in the back of the building and take the stairs or elevator one flight up to the 3rd floor. If you enter on the east side, take the elevator up to the 3rd floor, then the hallway to the center of the building, room on the right with all the windows.

Hope to see you there. My phone is 347-4643 or 297-6118.

The Poetry of Collage Sunday, March 28, 2010 1-5

Use collage to express a favorite poem, song lyric, or a few sentences of prose!

Inspired by the collages of Romare Bearden and the poetry of Langston Hughes,

Susan will guide you through the process of creating a four-page collaged booklet that expresses visually the words you have either written or collected. The psychology of color and emotion, darkness and light, will be explored, along with the visual implications of transfers and transparencies. Illustrations do not have to be literal; mood and feeling can add to the collaboration.

This afternoon workshop is open to both beginning and experienced artists and writers who wish to delve into the correlation between the visual language of poetry and the visual expression of collage. A favorite short poem can be brought with you, or you can use the “Poem Can” in class to create one. Haiku poem structure will be explained

and books of poetry will be on hand. Acrylic gels and glazes will be used; so dress for mess!

Any questions please contact dorothea tortilla at DorotheaTortilla@msn.com $45/all materials provided sign-up deadline March 20 class size limited to 8

Turn east (right) and cross the big bridge to Coos-Sumner Road. Turn left on Ross Inlet Rd.
When you see Olive Barber Rd to the left, go onto it.
Stay on Olive Barber Rd til you see Coho Lane, turn onto it. Sarita's house is the first house on left on Coho Lane.

Gallery Space Part Too

Don’t forget Josie’s On Broadway has gallery space for artists and is waiting at this very minute for your call. You remember all those bored looking operators they show on the endless PBS pledge breaks? Well they aren’t waiting and since its Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, Josie isn’t either, but tomorrow you could call or write or send a carrier pigeon To Josie’s On Broadway, or just drop in and bring your portfolio so that you too can have art on display. It’s a great deal, ninety days, no cost, the art can be for sale and all you have to do is be there or be square.

And if you happen to be confined to a bed and can’t come by there’s a convenient link on this very, self-same page which will take you to Josie’s site and her email contact information.

Gallery Space

Just heard Oregon Bay Properties located on the ground floor of the historic Hotel North Bend has 18-foot-high, gallery-quality walls that beg for art or a quilt to dampen the acoustics or add some color.

The owners are offering the walls as free gallery space for artists.

Call 541-808-2010 or drop by the offices at 1992 Sherman Ave, North Bend.

Hidden Treasures

In every community there lurks a hidden treasure and we in the South Coast artist’s enclave have one in the Easy Lane Frame and Select Gallery.

We all, or at least most of us, know Ken and Jane Snoddy are tireless supporters of the arts. Their gallery hosts many shows each year, they provide custom framing at reasonable prices and they have a multitude of gift ideas from original art to note card reproductions. (Just because the South Coast doesn’t get much snow who says New England has a monopoly on the greeting card business.) And if this wasn’t enough, Ken can also handle your fine art printing needs.

When a photographer creates an image they have worked for hours, sometimes months to find the right combination of elements. Painters have a much easier time of it, they can take elements collected in their memories, from many locations in all sorts of weather and combine them in a single painting, but a photographer has to actually track down the right location, wait in the freezing cold for just the right light to create that breathless picture. Photographers do this for every picture they create and then they run off to the Walmart and send their film or file off to some high school part-timer to run through a machine and squeeze out a muddy print. No, you say, not me, I have my prints done on archival paper at a professional print maker’s press where they take the time and energy to get it just right.

Either way you are still trusting your precious work to a stranger, who may or may not have any idea of what you had to do to get it in the first place. Why not trust it to someone who is a photographer? Ken Snoody is a professional photographer who creates fine art prints from his own work, who better to turn your raw material into a print for presentation to a jury? And he has all the tools to do what the big labs do and he’s in the neighborhood.

Did you ever take a picture on a rainy day, (Oregon dummy), and when it comes out of the camera it’s all soft and squidgy and pastelly? Sounds like a perfect candidate for printing on canvas. But that’s cheating making a photograph look like a painting. Yeah right, and photo-realist painters have been making paintings look like photographs long before Daguerre figured out how to capture an image on a plate. Its your work, putting it on canvas or silk or handmade paper are just some of the tricks of the trade, claiming it’s a painting when you print on canvas is a fraud, remember you’re an artist not a smiling conman on a cable network television show.

So when that one special picture comes along or a show which needs new and never shown prints remember Easy Lane Frames and Select Gallery and let a man who knows what you have done to get that shot keep his hands on the controls. You’ll feel better about it and the results will justify your feelings
Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. ~Scott Adams

Fresh Start

Let's start things off with a mild opportunity... Dutch Brothers is sponsoring a contest to design their next gift card. The reward? A month of free coffee or other enticements. Yeah, I know it won't pay the rent or get you a credit line in Pacific Artist magazine, but free coffee for a month? That could run them into bankruptcy. Apparently they don't know that artists are not morning people. Then there's the other incentive, do you really want some slacker from the street to win the award? Sure there are lots of talented people out there and most of them don't think of themselves as artists, but just anyone, winning a design award? Com'on, pickup your brushes, pens, watercolors, pastels, crayons and do a design. The worst thing that can happen is that you'll get a bit of mental exercise. And the best, well there's your work on every gift card sold by Dutch Brothers, hmmmmmm, that could be a better opportunity than spray painting your name on the empty buildings and over passes!
