Calling All Artists

Call to Artists!
“No one sleeps in this room without the dream of a common language.”
The current show at the OBP Community Art Gallery officially ends on 31st December, and the new show will start in the middle of January (probably the weekend of the 21st), and will be up for 6 months. I hope you will all have new (or old) work to contribute to the new show.
To find inspiration for this next one I looked through my book shelves, and what jumped out at me was Adrienne Rich's “The Dream of a Common Language,” and I wondered, Is there such a thing? Can there be such a thing? We all function within a private, personal, unique mythology that intersects, interacts, confronts, and contradicts the shared mythologies of our time and place, as well as the unique mythologies of other individuals, and those of the past. Can we connect and communicate? What common ideas and symbols can we use to do that? What codes are buried in those symbols, and how do we decrypt them? Diego Rivera said that art is a universal language; in a room full of paintings and visual art, is there a better chance of mutual understanding, than if we all, say, wrote poetry? Does adding language to a visual piece make its meaning clearer, or more obscure?
It's an interesting thing to think about, and I invite you all to contemplate and to make work upon these themes and questions, and to use language as part of your piece, if you like. Representative, figurative, or abstract is all acceptable. All media is welcome: paint, collage, mosaic, photography, prints (as primary medium) and as always, we have spots for wall-mounted or standing sculpture. Work will be due on Friday, January 13th, at OBP Gallery in North Bend, but I will want to see what you've got as it gets done, via email at OBPGallery@gmail.com. A reception date will be announced when we're closer to the time.
We hung about 75 pieces in this last show, in both the main room and the conference room, of all sizes and shapes. The high walls (20') in the main room mean that we can take, and in fact need, large-scale works, so if you are so inclined, go big! It might be a good idea to let me know if you're measuring your prospective canvas in feet rather than inches so I can get a sense of how many to expect, but if you've seen the space, you know how perfect it is for large canvases, and that we can't really have too many.
Please pass this on to other artists, and have fun! Feel free to email or call me if you have questions. If you haven't seen the current show, you're really missing out. It's just gorgeous, and very interesting.
See you all soon!
Tracy

Work Sale

Art Sale for Wes Whitman work

From: Leslie Thallon [mailto:lesthallon@gmail.com

I want to let you know about an upcoming sale of Wes's work, both prints and originals. It will be held at Coquille Valley Art Center on Nov. 19th and 20th from 10:00 - 2:00. I have some flyers, postcards, and advertising available on the internet.
Would you be willing to share this event with your contacts? There will be many prints for sale at a very affordable price. There are also some original watercolors that have never been seen before, as he painted until his last days.
Cheers,
Leslie

Local artists will be in attendance, informally and conversationally offering their insight into their artistic practice and the benefits of exhibiting at the Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center’s Art Shows.
Why Art for Health?
The Art for Health fundraiser will ensure that the SCHHC Quarterly Art Shows will continue. The shows have become a signature event for artists to show their work. Bandon and the southern Oregon coast are home to many artists practicing in a variety of media. The area boasts sculptors, collagists, oil painters, pastel artists, bronze artists, assemblage artists, plein air groups, woodworkers, and photographers.
In order to showcase the vibrant artistic culture thriving in the region, local artist and longtime Bandon resident Victoria Tierney worked with the Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center administration to begin the Quarterly Art Shows at SCHHC. The shows began in 2001. Ms. Tierney retired from curating the shows in 2015, handing the curatorial duties to local artists Ava Richey and Susan Lehman. Ms. Richey and Lehman have curated the quarterly shows since 2015 and have worked diligently to continue Tierney’s work of building community around art at the Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center.
The Quarterly Art Shows at SCHHC benefit artists, patients, SCHHC staff, and the Bandon community. For artists, the shows offer up the walls of the Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center, the largest gallery in the region. Patients and family members enjoy the therapeutic effects of the artistry surrounding them as they recover. Staff also enjoy the presence of art in the halls as they go about their work. Finally, the community of Bandon and the southern Oregon coast is invited to come to the hospital at any time during the course of each show to view the art, activating the halls of the hospital.
The event is hosted by the Southern Coos Health Foundation and the Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center.
For more information about this event, please contact Scott McEachern, 541.329.1040 or smceachern@southerncoos.org

IN MORE DETAIL
Join Certified Zentangle® Teacher Rosie Hill at Coos Art Museum on Saturday, November 5, 2016 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm for “Zentangle in Full Bloom in full color” Traditionally, Zentangle is drawn in black and white. When color is added, it becomes “Zentangle Inspired Art” or ZIA. And who can resist adding color to the blooming, blossoming tangles that were taught in our September class? “Resist” is a key word: we will create our tangles with a resist technique, adding color over the patterns that remain white. Zentangle experience is recommended, but not required.

All materials are included in class fee. Zentangle books and other supplementary materials will be available for purchase.

Teens and adults of all skill levels are welcome. Class size is limited to 20 participants. Class Fee: $30 CAM members / $35 non-members. Registration ends November 5, 2016. For registration go to www.coosart.org or visit Coos Art Museum at 235 Anderson in Downtown Coos Bay.
