Winter is coming

For Immediate Release

“From the devil we sprang, and to the devil we shall go.” - Richard the Lionheart

SO IT GOES COFFEEHOUSE PRESENTS THE LION IN WINTER

The mightiest/tiniest theatrical stage in the land presents James Goldmans medieval marvel.

“A classic tale of deep family dysfunction and Machiavelli-level intrigue . . . witty and wrenching, full of dagger-sharp quips and veiled motives.”

The Boston Globe

Insecure siblings fighting for their parents’ attention; bickering spouses who can’t stand to be together or apart; adultery, experimentation; even the struggle to balance work and family: These are themes as much at home in our time as they were in the twelfth century. In James Goldman’s classic play THE LION IN WINTER, domestic turmoil rises to an art form.

Keenly self-aware and motivated as much by spite as by any sense of duty, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine maneuver against each other to position their favorite son in line for succession. THE LION IN WINTER is a quintessential drama of family strife and competing ambitions, a work that gives visceral, modern-day relevance to the intrigues of medievsl England.

Combining keen historical and psychological insight with delicious, mordant wit, the stage play has become a touchstone of the theatre, and Goldman’s screenplay for the 1968 film adaptation won him an Academy Award. Told in “marvelously articulate language, with humor that bristles and burns” (Los Angeles Times), THE LION IN WINTER is the rare play that bursts into life from the page, and is now given a bold staging in the intimate coffeehouse setting at So It Goes Coffeehouse.

THE LION IN WINTER features Brenda Sund, John Beane, Jessica Dee, Brad Keith, Ansel Tauber, and Jason Iverson. Directed by John Beane and Daneal Doerr, stage maned by Ryan Borella.

Performances are varied dates from January 19-29. Tickets are $20 and can be purchased online at www.soitgoescoffee.com or in person downtown at 190 Central Avenue, Coos Bay, Oregon.

“The Lion in Winter” is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of Samuel French, Inc. www.concordtheatricals.com

THE LION IN WINTER features Brenda Sund, John Beane, Jessica Dee, Taylor Marchant, Brad Keith, Ansel Tauber, and Jason Iverson. Directed by John Beane and Daneal Doerr, stage managed by Ryan Borella.

Iconic

The month of November we have enjoyed the work of Mr. Kim Kimerling, as have many of our guests at functions.  We now invite you to the reception on Sunday December 4th, 2-4 p.m. at Black Market Gourmet to engage and visit with the artist and view this outstanding collection of work.

A bit about the artist:
Kim works in painting, pottery, printmaking, collage and recently in up-cycle books. His work is called Iconic Symbolism, based on a multitude of cultures.  Teaching art at the University of Nigeria, in Belize and the Navajo Reservation gave him ample opportunity to observe the dress, culture and customs of these very different populations.

He paints in acrylic and watercolor, combined into mixed-media collage.  Most recently he has worked in printmaking, finding collagraph to fit well with mixed-media collage.  Delight in creating up-cycle books has brought a natural transition to bookmaking.

If we assume Man has common heritage and common destiny, that we are truly members of one human race, then this may be the promise that makes Kim Kimerling at home with any culture, country and age.  A person once said of Kim that he went out to change the world and the world changed him and his art.

Kim's work has been exhibited in over 100 one-person shows throughout the United States, Canada, Nigeria, Mexico and Belize.  He is an award winner in all the media he works in.

Please join us for complimentary noshies, beverages and no-host bar at Black Market Gourmet on Sunday December 4th from 2-4 p.m.  If you are unable to make the reception, we ask that you contact Black Market Gourmet directly to view the show please.

Lions for Winter Nights

So It Goes Coffeehouse announces auditions for supporting roles for The Lion In Winter by James Goldman. Auditions take place Monday November 21st at 6:30 PM at the coffeehouse, 190 Central Avenue, Coos Bay. Seeking four male and one female, can be between 18 and 30s (presenting). All positions are paid.

**The roles of Henry and Eleanor have been cast.

  • John  – He is the youngest son of Henry and Eleanor (late teens/20s). He is sulky and sullen, with a boyish outlook on his position; many in the play describe him as a spoiled brat. He is described in the play as pimply and smelling of compost. He is Henry's favourite, but also the weakest. He vacillates throughout the play, not out of cleverness, but out of fear and weakness. He is easily tricked and manipulated by Geoffrey.

  • Geoffrey – He is a son of Henry and Eleanor, and a man of energy and action. He has the strongest intellect of the family; he is also a cold, amoral schemer. His view of himself is of one who yearned greatly for the love of his parents while receiving none. Yet the play leaves open to question whether any of Henry's three sons should be thought to have been truly loved by either Henry or Eleanor, and not merely used by King and Queen as pawns in their ceaseless scheming against one another.

  • Richard – The eldest surviving son of Henry and Eleanor, their second son Henry having recently died. Richard is handsome, graceful and impressive and has been a famous soldier since his middle teens. War is his profession and he is good at it. He is easily the strongest and toughest of the three sons/princes. Richard and Philip II have been sexually involved prior to the action of the play. However, Philip declares that he participated in the affair purely for political purposes, whereas Richard indicates he had genuine affection for Philip.

  • Alais Capet  – She is in love with Henry. Everyone underestimates her intellect and power. She is initially portrayed as innocent, but by the end of the play has begun to acquire a ruthless streak of her own, insisting that Henry imprison his three sons for the rest of their lives in the dungeon.

  • Philip II, King of France  – He has been King of France for three years. He is not initially as accomplished as Henry in manipulating people, but seems to acquire greater skills at this during the play. He is impressive and handsome without being pretty.

Audition information is online at soitgoescoffee.com/events

The production runs the final two weekends in January.

We are also seeking a single tech operator for the show.

The End Is Near

Local Favorites Puppeteers for Fears to Return to Coos Bay to Perform “The Cabaret at the End of the World” at the Egyptian on Wed, Oct. 19th, presented by So It Goes Coffeehouse!

Comedy troupe Puppeteers for Fears will return to Coos Bay to perform a new original show, The Cabaret at the End of the World, at The Egyptian Theatre on Wed., Oct. 19Adv. tickets are $15, and available on www.soitgoescoffee.com.

The show will be a Vaudeville-style collection of original songs, dance numbers, and skits performed with hand-and-rod (Muppet style) puppets and a live band—as well as with PFF’s special brand of over-the-top horror and science fiction comedy.

“This show is exactly what the name implies,” says company director and playwright, Josh Gross. “The puppets are trying to hold off the end of the world by fighting despair with jokes and songs—which is a feeling a lot of us can relate to after the last several years.”

Pieces to be performed include ghosts narrating graverobbing in song, lullabies for a noisy werewolf, rap battles between web-connected smart appliances, family drama amongst aliens, the puppet comedy roast of William Shakespeare, and more. To fully embrace the variety show format, the play will even include original live commercial jingles.

“It will be a fast and funny show,” says Gross. “There is a special energy to this piece.”

Because of inability to perform during the Covid-19 pandemic, this will be Puppeteers for Fears’ first show since summer 2019.

“When Covid happened in 2020, and things started shutting down, it was immediately clear we would be one of the last things to come back,” says the company’s Artistic Director Josh Gross. “Between traveling around and the game of Twister behind the puppet house, there was no way to do it safely until everything stabilized.”

Now that PFF is back in action, it is eager to not waste time. For its debut, The Cabaret at the End of the World, will be performed at a seven-date tour around the state of Oregon, and the company hopes to stage a broader regional tour in spring.

“Everyone is ready,” says Gross. “We all need to laugh.”

Complete dates and times for the current tour are below.

The Cabaret at the End of the World will run 90-120 minutes, and include R-rated content. It was directed by longtime PFF performers, Alyssa Matthews and Katy Curtis, and stars Forest Gilpin, Jake Raiter, Hunter Prutch, and Alyssa Matthews, with music performed live by The Elephant—who will also open the show with a set of their original material.

Tickets available at www.soitgoescoffee.com

More information about the company is available at PuppeteersForFears.com, and in the short documentary, Something Different, viewable here → https://youtu.be/rVkB-uAdS1k
