Things You Might Have Overlooked

Life is busy.

That's why it is so easy to overlook some of the basics. Take something as simple as color. I mean color is just that colorful. You look, you see that's all there is to it. Oh yeah? Try to duplicate the color of a sunset or the play of light against the broken walls of our South Coast. I've a favorite view or the Bar here in ole Coos Bay. I drive by it, (Okay I did drive by it back before my Gall Bladder broke) and each time I see it it has different colors to offer.

No color magic with PhotoShop, (Which if you are a regular reader you know I don't use. not because it isn't the best Photo Editing software around, it is. But it is also the MOST expensive and a bear to learn and most people artist or photographers just don't need it.). This is just the way it can from the camera.  An ancient Sony Mavica FD95 floppy disk camera I might add. You do not need a the latest megapixel giant to take good pictures.

So how did I do this with an obsolete camera? I looked at the light. Painters do this all of the time, it's their stock and trade and there is no good reason why photographers shouldn't do the same.

And it just so happens I have found an article or two to spread the gospel

Take a look at this article. Yes I know its from a photography magazine, but be open minded and see if you can't learn even from photographers.

And just in case you've never heard of color temperature read this article and find out what all of the fuss and feathers is about.

And your reward for all f this reading? Learning...and a contest. You didn't think I'd make you work really hard without having a carrot up my sleeve? Take a look at this. I know you do seascapes or flowers but there is a time and place for people pictures and this is one of them. Look and see if there's something you can contribute.

ECCENTRIC ARTISTS - SUNDAY OCT 2ND - EVERYONE WELCOME 3

Three Eccentrics

Odd, Whimsical, Beyond the Norm

David Castleberry

Nan Forsberg-Hammons

Shinan Barclay

Present their unique creativity

September and October, 2011

Evergreen Court, Baycrest Village

451 O’Connell St. North Bend, OR 541 756-7658

Reception Sunday, October 2nd, 1-3 pm. Meet the Artists

David Castleberry has been on a thirty-five year adventure, developing his unique, visual language. Through a relentless exploration into finding what’s important to him, he then created imagery that reflects that meaning. “Art is a way to express my values, hopes, dreams, fears—everything that makes me who I am,” he says. “What makes my work eccentric is that I refuse to be limited by what others have done. Rules in art keep one safe not exciting. It is not what you put into the art but what you fight to keep out. It all comes down to not being held captive by any idea but your own.”
Shinan Barclay began thinking outside of the box while teaching in an Arctic Inuit village. But long before that, she’d begun coloring outside of the lines when she was knee high to a grasshopper. The middle child of seven, born to artist parents who met at the Chicago Art Institute, Shinan dabbles in art, even writing reviews for the San Diego Museum of Modern Art. Recently she discovered that the “Artist Archetype” resides within the sphere of her home. “I don’t call myself a painter, yet,” she says, “I just show up and delight in the surprises that appear on my watercolor paper.”

Nan Forsberg-Hammons’ paintings and collages reflect her world-view. Her shows are an eclectic gathering, sharing with the viewer her sense of awe and appreciation of beauty, light and ideas. “As an artist,” Nan says, “I’m not interested in painting a pretty picture. I want to capture the energy behind what we see with our eyes. A song by Leonard Cohen says ‘Everything’s got a crack in it; that’s how the light gets in.’ I keep trying to paint that light.” Juried into National and International shows, Nan’s work garners numerous awards.

“Art is the accomplice of love.”

Susan Lehman at The Coos Bay Public Library

Susan Lehman’s latest abstract collages evoking “Mountains, Forests and Waterways” reflect the nuances of the shadows, the spaces in between, and the fluidity of the movement found in nature. These complex compositions rely upon the duality of presenting work in pairs; most of the paintings are diptychs. Lehman’s love of texture, subtle tones of color and distinctive style celebrate the energy and beauty found in the surrounding area.

Most of the work presented at the Coos Bay Public Library, some being seen for the first time, are part of an on-going series delving into the destructiveness of both man and nature—holding that power in awe—and the ability of the planet to heal itself. Lehman’s mark making and creative process display a quiet dignity and love of the materials—the culmination of ten years of working in collage.

The Coos Bay Public Library is at 525 Anderson. For information about library hours, call the library at 541-269-1101.

The show will be up until September 29th at 5 pm.

Getting Out

I'm still a few weeks from being released to walk among you. The Croaker thinks my compromised immune system might be an easy target for bugs and beasties. But I am happy to report that the wild blood sugar swings I was having when I was released from the hospital have settled and I'm normal most of the time.

No silly just the blood sugar, I'm still nuts and have no immediate plans to change.

But not being allowed to mix and mingle doesn't mean I am a shut-in. I get to go all of the exotic places, like North Bend Medical Center and the new Walgreen, in North Bend Medical Center. And then there's the mall.

What you've been to the mall! I have. I have walked in through Sears and taken lunch there after my doctor's visits the last coupla weeks which is a good thing because it has allowed me to check out S. L. Donaldson's art and the Thirty Parks exhibit.

Okay, so pressing my nose against the glass isn't the proper way to see the art, but its all I can do right now.

And just for the record, the S. L. Donaldson triptych in the window across from Sears is worth the trip. I knew ole s.L. had a keen eye for color and the right palette for making that eye show up on canvas, but this subtle bit of magic in paint has a dreamy under sea feel and even to my weakened eye is a major accomplishment.

Now since I have just an hour window after the doctor finishes poking and prodding me, could the rest of you load up the mall so I can stay current? I'd appreciate it.

Take the Time to Fuel Up

Life is busy. Really? Tell me something I don't know.

Okay, I'll do that little thing right now, or maybe I'll do one better and give you some choices. Take a look at this item from The Skinny Artist. It will make you think and if nothing else will make you smile. High School was a time of misery for a lot of us and we did seem to know everything about everything. Now that you know better maybe this will remind you of what you missed.

http://skinnyartist.com/15-things-i-wish-i-would-have-known-back-when-i-knew-it-all/

Everyone has a website or a Twitter account or a facebook page. Ever wonder if it was doing you a bit of good? Just having a tool doesn't mean it will work for you. Owning a Nikon doesn't make you a photographer, it makes you a Nikon owner. Do you want to be a wedsite owner or do you want all of the work and sweat and tears (If you haven't shed bitter tears over building a wed site, you haven't known the meaning of the Blues.) you poured into building your site to do something? Take a look at this item from Shutterbug and see if  you are doing it right.

http://www.shutterbug.com/content/websites-best-practices-marketing-presentation-and-clients

Take a look around the bay area, there's a music event on every corner. And why aren't you there? Yes, painters can find as varied and challenging subjects as photographers can and maybe you have that unique vision like Leroy Neiman and can turn your images into the sort of thing that catches the eye of the Big Bunny himself, Hugh Hefner! Not interested in Hef's opinion? Sad, he has a national magazine bought by the young and shamefully wealthy and they unlike their pickup truck loving, jean wearing brothers buy art. I thought that might catch your attention. Have a look at this article and see if it doesn't give you and idea or two about what to do with your spare time.

The picture represents the feelings and point of view of the intelligence behind the camera.

Brooks Atkinson

The virtue of the camera is not the power it has to transform the photographer into an artist, but the impulse it gives him to keep on looking.

Time and Tide

The best laid plans of mice and men... Yeah, I had big plans. Big plans, like entering the Celebrate the Arts show in Florence and the Digital Image show at the Southern Coos Hospital. Too bad my guts blew up and put me out of service for a month.

That's the kind of thing that happens when you get a little bit older. The time you thought you had just slips away and there you are wrapped in tubes with doctors clucking over you and art burning a hole in your pocket.

So I didn't get to enter and the truth be told probably wouldn't have been allowed to enter this Neon Dream. The hospital has a no nude policy and rightly so, they are free to set any policy they like. But I like this and so I'm entering it here cause I don't want to wait for the next show which might come when I'm flat on my back, again.

This started out as pencil sketch, got run though some software and the result is just peachy, or so I think. Maybe you like and maybe you don't, she's still high on my list.

Ava Richey's Art News

Hi Everyone,

This coming Monday, September 19, 2011, 12 - 3 p.m., we will be painting plein air at Coquille River Lighthouse, Bullards Beach, Bandon.

We will start out at the parking lot by the Lighthouse. If it's too windy to paint around the lighthouse, we can take the trail to the river beach east of the lighthouse where we usually paint. It's a little more protected there.

Bring your lunch and beverage, if you like.

My phone is 541-347-4643 or cell is 541-297-6118.

“Creative Castoffs”

Bring us your “Creative Castoffs” Now!

The Arts Center will be hosting its second annual sale of “anything artful” on Saturday, October 22nd from 10am until 3pm. That means it is once again time to clean out your art studio or your art space! We want your unwanted "artful items" so we can help put them into the hands of those who will use them!

If all of you remember last year, the Creative Castoffs Sale was an amazing day of affordable purchases of items like frames, easels, art glass, art books, magazines, paints, brushes, palate knives, watercolor paper, tripods, sound equipment, scrapbooking goods, photography tools, woodshop tools, floral design items, canvases, finished artwork, studio props, ceramic and clay items, glass working tools, pastel kits and soooo many items for creative use and enjoyment that we just cannot begin to list them all.

Beginning now, The Arts Center will take useful items only that pertain in some way to art-making, art-learning, art-fixing, etc. Yes, we are happy to give you a letter of donation too for your taxes; just ask! Is it too heavy or too big for you to haul? We can assist you, or at least we can try!

Umpqua Valley Arts Center hours are Tuesday through Friday 10am to 4pm.

If you have questions or if you are wondering whether or not it is “artful” please call the Arts Center Operations Assistant, Areole Trattner at 541-672-2532 and she can help you! (If she is not available you can ask for Aleta).

The World Covers 30 Parks by 30 Artists

If you missed the opening reception, and I did, but you wanted to be there and would have if you could, then the next best thing, aside from getting off the couch and going right now, is the article in The World.

http://theworldlink.com/entertainment/article_2b02ee82-da45-11e0-9de4-001cc4c03286.html

And it just so happens I have the link courtesy of Susan Lehman and pat Snyder, so, I have placed it strategically in the middle of this post so if you have a yen to take a look it is easy to find.

No substitute for seeing it in the vivid living color flesh, but for a Monday, a glance at the link will do.

Even the Halt and the Lame

You don't have to be as dedicated as Kellebird, braving the freezing marsh at half past dawn nor as imaginative as S. L. Donaldson with her fantastic color choices, you can just by venturing out into the wild and exotic places around your own home find great subjects just waiting for their chance to be immortalized.

I found these Naked Ladies posing in my own yard and what art fancier could pass up a chance to do raw and unretouched pictures of such wanton beauty?
That's what can happen even for the halt and the lame so long as you look and are willing to see. go find something and make your mark today. then if tomorrow never comes you'll have something for the archaeologists to marvel over fifteen thousand years from now!
