Captain Charles Moore has launched a determined quest to save the oceans after discovering what he describes as a ‘plastic soup,’ a sweeping mid-oceanic tract spread in the Pacific with scraps of plastic. He will be speaking about it all on Monday May 14th at 7pmPT/10pmET at Washed Ashore's base at Art101 in Bandon, Oregon.

The event will be hosted by Lead Artist and Executive Director Angela Haseltine Pozzi of The Washed Ashore Project, our non-profit organization that uses unique art sculptures made from marine debris to encourage awareness of ocean pollution.

“Captain Moore is a strong supporter of The Washed Ashore Project and this is a tremendous opportunity for anyone who is interested in the health of our oceans to meet an expert on the subject,” stated Pozzi.

“He is a passionate clean oceans advocate who can authoritatively inform us and answer questions about the tragedy that we face and what actions we should take,” she added.

Captain Moore is the founder of the Algalita Marine Research Foundation. His new book “Plastic Ocean” tells about his return to the area where he first saw the ‘plastic soup,’ soon to be redubbed "The Great Pacific Garbage Patch." His organization systematically culls scientific samples and the results are shocking: plastic caught in his nets in the North Pacific gyre outweigh zooplankton, the ocean’s food base, by a factor of six to one. His research prompts a massive global reassessment of plastic’s invasiveness and raises profound questions about the implications of this man-made, floating landfill.

His initial voyage, his subsequent trips back, his research into this startling discovery, his hard-won scientific credibility, and his dogged, game-changing efforts to get the world to pay attention to a looming plastic peril are chronicled in his new book which will be discussed on Monday evening. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Estimated at three million tons of plastic debris in the Northeast Pacific, between Hawaii and the West Coast, the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is roughly two million square miles.

With recent natural disasters such as the Japanese tsunami, the flooding in Mississippi and the plastic waste that has been swept out to sea as a result, it is more important than ever to clean up our plastics on land in order to keep them out of our oceans.

ABOUT WASHED ASHORE

The Washed Ashore community project aims to educate and create awareness about marine debris and plastic pollution through art. Washed Ashore is part of Artula Institute for Arts & Environmental Education whose mission is to provide opportunities to express and teach environmental issues through the arts.

Community members are working together to clean up our beaches and process the debris into art supplies to construct giant sculptures of the marine creatures most affected by plastic pollution. This has resulted in thousands of pounds of debris collected from beaches and an educational touring art exhibit to showcase the sculptures.
