Monday Plein Air Paintout Information
Hello Everyone,

This Monday, July 2nd, 3 - 6 p.m. the paintout will be at Pioneer Cemetery in Bandon. Beautiful old cypress trees live there with a view of the river and ocean, and interesting old headstones.

We have talked for the last couple of years about painting later in the day, when the light is more interesting, and the summer wind has slowed a bit, hopefully. We will try this new time for the month of July, to see if it works out.

Directions: From Old Town Bandon take Caroline Street (next to the water treatment plant with the whales painted on the tanks) up the hill to the stop sign at Harlem Street. Turn left, go up a block--it's on the left.

Our theme this summer is "Iconic Trees of the South Coast". So if you have a favorite tree or two that you think we would like to set up and paint, please let me know. We will have a show with our trees later on.

Anyone have beautiful madrone, maple trees, or others, on their property, or know of trees that are accessible to painters and parking of cars, please call me.

***If any of you are interested in joining us to paint plein air in Roseburg in September (See Call to Artists at the end of the newsletter for more information) please let me know right away, so we can make hotel reservations, and so you can get your application in.

My phone number 541-297-6118.

Thanks!
Ava

ps: Friday, June 29th is the pick up date at Souther Coos Hospital in Bandon from the Weather Report Show. Please go in and pick up your paintings. Thanks. :)

pps: Please don't forget to come to the opening reception of the Grand Salon Art Show at HarborTown Center in Old Town Bandon this Friday night. 7 p.m. - 11 p.m. Good food, live music and lots of art.

ppps: If any of you have art you want to sell at the Port Orford Art Council "Kiss it Goodbye" Sale, where 50% of the proceeds go to you the artist, and the other is split between supportin the POAC kids' art program and the PO Library....art can be dropped off at Art by the Sea in Old Town Bandon by Monday, July 2nd. Susan Lehman will deliver it to Port Orford on Tues. morning. Or contact Joyce at 541-253-6198.

Art does not have to be frame

pppps: Are there any clay artists out there who are interested in the creation of abstract, fine art using clay as a medium? We have a subscriber who would like to talk with those interested in making 'not necessarily functional' pieces. Please email me and I will put you in touch. Thanks. Ava

Artists' Accomplishments:

We want to honor the achievements of all you artists, so don't be shy about sending the highlights of your art lives, or those of your artist friends.

----------------------------------
Announcement:

You have probably heard by now that North Bend artist Curt Hitch passed away recently. I had the honor of knowing Curt and painting with him. He taught me about painting technique, especially in pastel. But the thing I learned most from Curt is that the best way to learn is just to get in there and experiment with every medium, and every subject, and most of all to enjoy doing it. Making art and fishing were more than pastimes to him...they were what life is all about. Curt was always passionate about art, and because of that, he inspired us to be excited by our creative ventures. I'm so glad I own lots of his art to keep me smiling.

Oregon Arts Commission (OAC) has set a deadline of August 15, 2012 for the first of three deadlines for Career Opportunity Grants. Additional resources from The Ford Family Foundation are available to mid-career visual artists in this cycle.

Career Opportunity Grants support Oregon artists who have identified critical opportunities to advance their careers through the development of artistic, or business and professional skills.

Artists may apply for funding to show in national or international exhibits, to participate in conferences, workshops or residencies, or to explore other ways to expand their knowledge and business base. Up to $1500 may be requested. Emerging and established artists practicing all disciplines are eligible, students and hobbyists are not.

The Ford Family Foundation Opportunity Grants target full-time visual artists in the 30 and over age group. Awards range from $1500 to $7500. Artists apply for The Ford Family Foundation funds in the same manner as the Career Opportunity grants; the applications are reviewed in a single combined process.

"We are very pleased to offer this important support to Oregon artists in partnership with The Ford Family Foundation", said OAC Executive Director Chris D'Arcy. "The Career Opportunity grants have enabled artists to take designs into the commercial marketplace; allowed others to travel to present their work at international fairs and festivals, and provided for the professional recording of new music. These artists are important part of Oregon's creative economy.

Grant applications are evaluated according to the following three criteria.

Artistic Merit 50% quality of work samples, background and experience as demonstrated by resume, samples and other supporting materials.

Career Impact 45% uniqueness of the opportunity, quality of the proposed event, or a clearly defined need for the artistic or business skill proposed to be developed.

Budget 5%: Costs proportional to proposed activity, purpose for which grant funds will be used.
