Second Street Gallery News Letter

Second Street Gallery enjoyed our busiest summer in 3 years!

The estimated visitor counts for each of the summer months

exceeded 6000 guests and the trend is continuing for the

month of September. Thank you!

“It’s Time for Art” promotion is in full swing. As of

this writing we have sold 150 of our Chico Bags in 7 weeks,

promoting the use of compact, recyclable bags for shopping

to replace single use plastic bags. These bags have an

artistic rendering of the Coquille River Light House done by

Bill Kelsay, and carry the logo “It’s Time for Art,”

to promote the use of art for home décor and gifting.

Our staff is keeping busy with their individual artwork.

Barry LaVoie has been doing pet portraits and creating

music, Ava Richey continues with her plein air painting

group on Mondays and publishing her art newsletter. Susan

Lehman has been busy teaching collage workshops and has just

returned from an exciting week in Arizona attending an art

camp.

Summer Art School at Second Street Gallery held classes in

felting, collage, oil painting and photography this summer.

Our enrollees enjoyed learning new techniques and applied

them to their own creations to take home. A new addition to

our upcoming spring term classes will be a student show in

the gallery at the end of the term. Keep in touch to find

out about classes this spring.

Our “Meet and Greet the Artist” program showcased 14

artists during the summer months, attracting many visitors

and resulting in increased sales for the artists. The

program will continue between Thanksgiving and Christmas

with local artists demonstrating and creating work suitable

for holiday gift-giving. Among the talented artists lined

up for these sessions are Michael Ousley, Lauren Scott,

Susan Lehman and Ava Richey.

Our Second Annual “Celebrate Photography” exhibition,

workshop and competition begins on October 27th, which is

the deadline for submitting work. Judging will take place on

the 28th with the opening reception that evening.

Photography workshops covering an introduction to Photoshop,

camera handling and controls, lighting and composition will

take place on the 29th and 30th. The exhibition will run

through December 16th, 2011. This year we are dedicating

our celebration to the memory of a long-time friend of the

gallery, Nancy Rotenberg, who passed away last month from

cancer. A sampling of her work, along with her book,

“Photography & the Creative Life,” will be available

during our celebration of photography. For more information,

call the gallery (541 347-4133) or click on the Events tab

on the website.
