Nose Itching

Hi friends of South Coast Folk Week,

Did you know that company’s coming? Our community is hosting a week-long celebration of dance, music and song on October 4-10 as a project of the Country Dance and Song Society's centennial celebration.
Firefly Family Band and dance leader Bob Dalsemer are coming from North Carolina to help us put on this fabulous series of activities. They have already begun working with the Folk Week steering committee, and soon we will be working with a corps of volunteers – that’s YOU! Folk Week will help raise the visibility of traditional dance, music and song in our community!

A schedule of activities is being developed; partnerships are being formed, and venues are getting booked! In addition to in-school activities for Marshfield and North Bend High School students, we've scheduled activities for students who participate in after school music activities – South Coast Lab Band and ORCO Arts Guild. Firefly and Bob will also be working with students on the SWOCC campus.

For the general public, we have many contra / square dances scheduled throughout the week; a concert featuring Firefly Family Band; 4 workshops for callers; 4 workshops for musicians; a sing along; a workshop for song leaders; a workshop for organizers and training for our board of directors.

Here is a sneak peek at some of the workshop descriptions:

Open band workshop  “Dance Band Basics: Playing for contra dancers”  Your role as dance musician, making simple tunes shine, avoiding common 'train wrecks,' and fostering a sense of fun.  All levels.

Dancers workshop “Mysteries of Contra Dance Revealed” Improve your dance memory; anticipate what’s next; how to assist or be assisted by other dancers.

Song leaders’ workshop “If You Can Talk, You Can Sing: Song Leading for Everyone” Song leading basics, encouraging participation, engaging the folk process, fun songs for all ages.

Callers Workshop: Resources, Contra Dance Music, Dance Notation Systems, Calling Techniques
Musicians’ workshop “Tricks of the Trade: How to Make Your Tunes Dance”  A workshop for contra dance musicians focusing on nifty dynamics, effective medleys, and creating energy in the dance hall.

I can’t wait to go to as many workshops and activities possible!

Many hands makes light work. We need your help! Respond to this email and offer help with one or more of these volunteer assignments:

1.   A home stay to one or more band members
2.   Host our guests (5) for a home-cooked lunch or a dinner one of the days while they are here
3.   Step up to help volunteer at one of the MANY activities listed above
4.   The steering committee made a conscious decision that ALL activities will be admission by donation, keeping activities accessible for families in our community. We’ll soon be soliciting business sponsors to help cover the costs of renting venues, sound technicians, printing posters and programs, etc. Can you help?

A shout out to Marty Giles of Wavecrest Discoveries, our first business sponsor! https://www.facebook.com/wavecrestdiscoveries
A shout out to the Coquille Tribal Community Fund who awarded a generous grant to support South Coast Folk Week!
