SPECIAL EVENTS THIS WEEK
Thursday, Aug. 20: Folk music, singing and
dance at Ocean Ridge -- An afternoon of live folk music, international
folk dance, and group singing at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20 at Ocean Ridge
Assisted Living, 1855 Ocean Blvd SE., Coos Bay. Admission is free, and
all ages are welcome. The event is part of Ocean Ridge’s Lifelong
Learning series. We've got musicians, but we need some enthusiastic
singers for the sing-along, and some eager dancers (no experience
necessary) to help other people learn some easy dances.
Thursday,
Aug. 20: Hot guitar-fiddle duo at Liberty Pub -- Guitarist Larry Unger
and fiddler Audrey Knuth will play at 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at
Liberty Pub, 2047 Sherman Ave., North Bend. Unger is a member of the
contra dance band Notorious (www.notoriousfolk.com) and is the composer
of many well-known contra dance tunes and waltzes. Knuth is a member of
the band The Free Raisins and is a frequent fiddle camp instructor.
There will be a $5 cover charge.
Friday, Aug. 21: Free contra
dance in Reedsport -- Hot New England contra musicians Larry Unger and
Audrey Knuth will play a free contra dance at the Reedsport Community
Center, 451 Winchester Ave., at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21. Callers Stacy
Rose and Karen Olsen will teach contras and simple old-time squares.
Unger, a guitarist, is the composer of numerous contra tunes and
waltzes, and Knuth is a sought-after contra fiddler and fiddle
instructor. All dances will be taught, and no partner or experience is
needed. All ages are welcome. Wear soft-soled shoes and comfortable
clothing, and come promptly at 7 p.m. for a beginner lesson. Admission
is free, thanks to a grant from the Douglas County Cultural Coalition,
but donations will be accepted in support of the South Coast Folk
Society’s South Coast Folk Week event, coming up in October.

HELP! BLACKBERRY FESTIVAL
We're
having a booth at Blackberry Festival this weekend, and we could use
some volunteers to hand out flyers and spread the good word about our
activities and Folk Week. If you're interested, email southcoastfolksociety@gmail.com.
HELP! OTHER THINGS
1.
Folk Week committee needs someone to make phone calls to reach out to
contact people in various organizations around town and invite them to
Folk Week. Script provided. Email Gail Elber, gailelber@gmail.com.
2.
SCFS has a booth at Farmer's Market every Wednesday 10-1. We need
people to hand out flyers, play tunes, help set up/take down the booth.
Email Jennifer Sordyl, violinjenn@gmail.com.
3.
All Folk Week events are admission by donation. Anyone have an empty
coffee can(s) with lid that can be decorated to accept donations? Maybe
you have a more artistic solution? Email Stacy Rose, rosecontra@gmail.com.
WHOM WILL YOU BRING?
Did
you know that if you bring a friend (who has never been to a contra
dance) to any Folk Week dance, both you and the friend will get a free
admission to a subsequent dance? Good deal.
