Reality Check

AN ABSTRACT REALITY
A showing and studio sale of the paintings, photographs and collages of Gan Martin and his daughter Ferne Martin on August 30th at Black Market Gourmet.  A public reception will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday August 30th.  The show will remain hanging at Black Market Gourmet through the end of October.

Gan Martin (1937-2004) was born and raised in Buhl. Idaho.  He lived and worked in Coos Bay for over 40 years where he was the visual merchandiser for "The Hub" department store, owner and operator of the GEM Sign Company and eventually focused on his art full time.  His education in the arts included study at the Chicago Art Academy, Willamette University and Portland Art Museum School as well as workshops and mentor relationships in the art community.  Martin's understanding of composition and his fascination with detail and expressive color makes his works both vibrant and timeless.

Ferne Martin was born and raised in Coos Bay.  She left the area to attend college in Alaska and remained there, teaching for approximately 15 years.  She now lives in Northern California where she teaches math and science to middle school students.  While many of her photos  are printed directly from their raw images, her greatest enjoyment comes from the manipulation and layering of images to create collage-type images that emphasize contrasts both physically and conceptually.

Please plan to join us on Sunday August 30th for complimentary hors d'eouvre and no-host bar.
