The King of Cool

Who is the coolest guy around, the Fonz, Steve McQueen or George Clooney? No it’s the King of Cool, the Sultan of Smooth, the Thrill of Chill, Joe Cool!

Come-on you’re not THAT old, Snoopy, you know the world’s greatest World War One fighter pilot ace? That’s right, Sparky created the emblem of what every pet owner truly feels, my pet is the best. And Snoopy is America’s pet. Garfield may eat lasagna, but Snoopy has a Picasso over his pool table. How can you not love that?

And you know we all feel that way about our kids. Just ask a pet owner about their animals and stand back; a filibustering Congressman doesn’t stand a chance. People love their pets.

Which is good news for all us artists, you might not get a sensible person to shell out hard cold cash for a brilliant landscape of a meticulously accurate scale drawing of a dreadnaught class battle ship, but Fluffy? Fluffy wins everytime.

And fortunately for artists our pets love us back. They sit for hours allowing even the most painstaking craftsman to get it right. They play, scuffle, chase, fall, stumble and, race around the house creating more scenes of artistic merit in a day than a master could dream up in a decade.

So what are you doing about those little, furry art makers living in your very house? Have you tried your hand at making them part of your artistic life?

They’re not very lofty and serious; nothing a dedicated artist would sacrifice their precious time for. Okay, but don’t expect to sell out at the next show. Oh, you don’t work for money. Art is not for the frivolous.

Okay, but you are passing up a wonderful source of ideas and they’re right there in your home, every day, churning out new stunts just for you. And catching their energy and zest isn’t all that easy. You can do a landscape without rushing; you can even take a picture and work on it at home. But for one of those fast moving, clever little guys, them you have to work fast, take a picture or have a great memory. Pet art ain’t for amateurs.

So the next time you are stuck for a theme, an idea, an inspiration, take a look at Fluffy.
