Doctor, Doctor Write me a Prescription for the flute

Hope everyone had a very happy and safe  New Year!

Well, it’s time to start marking your calendar for the many upcoming events at Coos Art Museum.  Need something to do on a rainy Saturday afternoon, check out the information below, provided by the Gail Elber, the curator of the “Musical Instruments@Cam” exhibition.

Subject: News release/PSA: Native flute maker will speak Jan. 9 at Coos Art Museum

Hear different types of Native American flutes and learn how they’re made Jan. 9 at Coos Art Museum. Don "Doc" Slyter of Coos Bay, an elder of the Coos, Lower Umpqua and Siuslaw Indian Tribes, has been making and playing Native American flutes for 13 years. His flutes are part of the exhibit “Musical Instruments @ Coos Art Museum,” on display through Feb. 13. At 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 9, at the museum, Doc will explain the construction of several types of flutes from his collection and play them. Guests can chat with Doc and try some of his flutes after the talk. Presentations continue every Saturday through Feb. 13. For a full schedule, plus videos about the 10 instrument makers in the exhibit, visit http://www.coosart.org/musical-instruments-coos-art-museum/. Admission to the museum is $5 general, $2 for students and seniors and free to Coos Art Museum members. The museum is at 235 Anderson Ave., Coos Bay. For more information, call Gail Elber, 541-808-1773.
