Folksy Update

South Coast Folk Society

Jun 7 at 11:19 PM
No contra dancing and no international folk dancing till September, but how about sing-along, a guitar accompaniment workshop, folk dance lessons and a music and dance campout?
TOMORROW (or, probably, TODAY): SECOND SUNDAY SING-ALONG
Sunday, June 8, 4-6 p.m., at the North Bend Library. We've got the Rise Up SInging songbooks. Singers, guitarists and pianists welcome! Teach us a new song.
JUNE 9 or JUNE 16: LEARN TO PLAY GUITAR WITH OTHER MUSICIANS
Question: What happens when we have multiple rhythm players at a session?
Answer: The melody gets buried by conflicting rhythms and overpowering volume.
Calling all guitar, bouzouki, and other rhythm players! A special June workshop is being offered and YOU are invited to learn how to play WITH other guitar players! The workshop will cover learning to play in a group setting, listening to others in a group, making adjustments in your playing to accommodate other players, specific techniques enabling less to become more for accompaniment, and a practice session with melody players.
 Guitar Accompanist Workshop
Monday June 9th 7pm - 9pm and Monday June 16th 7pm - 9pm (offered twice - take your pick or come to both!)
Don & Jennifer's house in Coos Bay
RSVP / call for directions 541.808.3507 or email trailsendpublications@charter.net
This special workshop is being offered with the intention of making sessions more enjoyable for players and listeners. However, this skill-building opportunity will have far-reaching implications in all settings of your musical growth. Hope you can make it! Feel free to pass the invitation along.

AUGUST 1-3: OPEN BAND SUMMER CAMPOUT & DANCE
Hola Amigos!
We're slowly but surely getting our act together on the OPEN BAND SUMMER CAMPOUT & DANCE.
Fri-Sun Aug 1,2, & 3.
To be held here:
http://smithriverrvparkandmarina.blogspot.com/
8451 Lower Smith River Rd Reedsport OR 97467
DANCE, to be held at 7pm on Saturday night 8/2, will be a mile down the road here:
Smith River Grange Hall #585 - 9850 Lower Smith River Rd Reedsport OR 97467
We have the facebook page up for the event: RSVP there, if you will please. Also, post questions & suggestions and volunteer for whatever fun you want to cook up...
The purpose of this campout is to socialize, play tunes & have a dance. This is YOUR campout so you get to create it the way you'd like. Please participate in the planning by utilizing the comments on facebook or emailing me. I am picturing the "KISS" method, everyone is responsible for their own campsite, meals & transportation. It IS a small campground, so we will have to double up on some of the spaces. First come, first served on the best spots so pencil in that weekend and plan on being there early!
http://smithriverrvparkandmarina.blogspot.com/ will give us a group rate of $20/ night RV's/boats & $10/night tents.

Smith River RV Park & Marina has been around for decades. Located right on the Smith River just 10 miles north of Reedsport, offering RV spaces, a marina for boating & lots of beauty. For direct questions about camping contact Jessica (541) 707-0841 at the RV Park.
We will offer workshops & host a dance at the Smith River Grange Hall on Saturday night at the nearby Smith River Grange Hall #585 - 9850 Lower Smith River Rd Reedsport OR 97467
Do you have an idea for a workshop or circle or some mischief of some kind? Offer it up!
We can paddle around in our kayaks during the day... play tunes by the campfire at night.
We will provide a cd and pdfs (before the campout) of some new open band tunes to work up in time for the fall SCFS Open Band Dance.
Warmly,
Jennifer Sordyl
Vice President/Contra Dance Coordinator
