Folk Society to Host Contra Dance Saturday February 6

There will be a big public Contra Dance in Coos Bay on Saturday, February 6.  Join the South Coast Folk Society for an evening of great live music and dance.  It’s all happening at the Harding Learning Center located at 755 S. 7th in Coos Bay starting at 7PM.  This special event features dance instruction and calling by a premier local caller, Stacy Rose from Coos Bay, and music by the ever-popular Celtic Swings.  Contra dancing is a light-hearted form of social dancing that is easy to learn, energizing, and lots of fun for the whole family.  Singles are welcome, as are dancers of all ages and skill levels.

The fun begins at 7PM with a brief lesson by one of our favorite callers, Stacy Rose of Coos Bay.  Stacy will then teach and call a variety of interesting dances all evening until 10PM.  She is known throughout Oregon for her warm personality and clear, concise calling style that sweeps in first-time dancers quickly and gives center stage to the music.  First timers who arrive for the 7PM lesson will receive a ticket for free admission to their second dance.

The music for this month’s contra dance will be provided by the Celtic Swings.  The Celtic Swings were formed during the 2014 Coos Bay Celtic Festival. Hailing from Coos Bay are Jennifer Sordyl on fiddle, and Don Berg on guitar. This band incorporates seasoned celtic, old timey, swing fiddle and fancy guitar playing tunes in their repertoire. You can expect danceable sets from smooth jigs, to swing music, to rockin’ reels.

The Folk Society hosts Contra Dances every first Saturday at the Harding Learning Center, and every third Saturday at the Greenacres Grange.   Both venues offer a full evening of social dancing to great live music.  These events are alcohol and fragrance free.  Doors open at 6:45PM.  Admission: General $7, Students w/ID and Seniors over 60 $6, Members $5, and Supervised Children under 6 are free.
