Graphique Noir celebrates a hugely popular aesthetic found in a plethora of today's media. This somewhat "dark" art-form encompasses a surprising complexity of genres including that of the Graphic Novel, PC/Video Gaming, Manga, Steampunk, Post Apocalyptic, Gothic, Anime, and countless derivatives and combinations of all of the above.

Often, many consider this art "fringe or outsider"... yet through popular osmosis it has become an influential phenomenon, infusing popular culture through Film, Television, Fashion, Product Design, Advertising, and Music. While Science Fiction is commonly in the forefront of this imagery, the undercurrents of society are often explored through fascinating, sometimes squeamishly eccentric, aberrant and deliciously delirious avenues.

Graphique Noir as an exhibition will embrace and explore works of art in virtually any imaginable media including paintings, digitally generated imagery, textiles, sculptural works, animation, video/films, performance, music, dance, and the list goes on and on! We would also love to see your works in progress as well, even if they're not completely realized: sketches, unfinished illustrations, etc!

About the Jurors:

Marshall Vandruff

Marshall Vandruff has worked as an artist and educator in southern California for over thirty years. His clients include MAD Magazine, Warner Brothers, Hanna-Barbera, Dark Horse Comics, Nickelodeon, Insomniac Games, LeapFrog Animation, Rockstar, Blizzard Entertainment, AutoDesk, The Gnomon Workshop, ImagineFX, and over forty advertising agencies. Since 1984, He has taught over 200 Drawing and Visual Storytelling courses at universities and corporations, and his students include many leading artists in the fields of animation, illustration, comic books, film and games. Marshall has been featured twice in Who's Who Among America's Teachers.

Kazu Kibuishi

Kazu Kibuishi is a graphic novel artist, author, and the editor of the popular Flight Anthologies, as well as the author and creator of the the web comic Copper, and the graphic novels Amulet, and Daisy Kutter: The Last Train, a winner of the YALSA Best Books for Young Adults Award.

George Pratt

George Pratt is a veteran graphic novelist and illustrator, who for the past thirty years has produced landmark works for Marvel Comics, Heavy Metal, DC, Bantam Books, Warner Books, Mojo Press, Random House, and many other publishers. George's first graphic novel, Enemy Ace, was nominated for both the Eisner Award and the Harvey Award, has been translated into nine languages, and at one point was on the required reading list at West Point. Enemy Ace won the France Info Award for Best Foreign Language Graphic Novel, and the British Speakeasy Award for Best Foreign Language Graphic Novel. Pratt's Batman: Harvest Breed was nominated for two Eisner Awards, and his The Wolverine: Netsuke won the 2003 Eisner Award for Best Painter/Multimedia Artist. He currently teaches for The Illustration Academy and at Ringling College of Art and Design.
