A Coastal Sensibility

Living on the edge of the continent, witnessing wind and extreme weather, artists reflect in their choices of color palette, shapes, and texture the turbulence and movement that they witness daily.

The participating artists in the UVAA show “A Coastal Sensibility” are: Ava Richey, dorothea tortilla, and Susan Lehman, all from Bandon; Connie Zane, Mike Ousley and Sharon Jensen, from Langlois; Arlene Tinsley from Coquille; Janne LaValle from Lakeside; Pat Snyder from Coos Bay and Clayton Redwood from North Bend. The artists in this group are brought together from Ava Richey’s Monday Plein Air Painters; five of them are in a monthly critique group; four are from a monthly collage group and another five are founding members of the Bandon co-operative gallery Art by the Sea Gallery and Studio.

Often non-objective, abstract, expressionistic or impressionistic, these artists have a common thread that runs throughout their work and that is the beauty and drama of the coast. All are painters, sometimes working in watercolor, oils, acrylics, and pastels; some incorporate collage.
