Folk Society to Host a Contra Dance February 3, Public Welcome
On Saturday evening, February 3, the South Coast Folk Society will host a Contra Dance in Coos Bay. All are welcome to this public event which features live music by the seven South Coast musicians in the Daytimers Band, and great calling by Roy Ward of Eugene. The Contra Dance will be held at the Coos Bay Senior Center, located at 4th and Ingersoll, starting at 7PM in the evening. Contra dancing is a light-hearted form of social dancing that is easy to learn and fun for all ages. Singles, couples and families will enjoy contra dancing, and new dancers are always welcome.
The Folk Society has arranged for The Daytimers, a popular local band, to play dance music for three hours, from 7-10PM. The Daytimers play a lively mix of Celtic, old timey, and modern contra tunes. Seven local musicians combined their talents to form this vibrant band. These musicians are Don Berg on guitar, Jennifer Sordyl, Hege Bakken and Alayne Olmsted on fiddles, Karen Olsen on concertina, Davy Sweetman on penny whistle and bodhran, and Dave Williams on mandolin.
A very personable guest caller from Eugene, Roy Ward, will guide dancers throughout the evening. He will teach all the steps and patterns that you need to know. Over the past 10 years, Roy has enjoyed contra dances throughout the Pacific Northwest. He has trained with some of the best callers in the region, and is planning an evening full of exciting new dances appropriate for all skill levels. He will give a lesson at 7PM, and first-timers who show up for this lesson will receive a ticket for free admission to their next dance. Wear your dancing shoes, casual clothes, and a big smile.
This event is alcohol and fragrance free. Refreshments are available. Doors open at 6:45PM. Admission: General $7, Seniors over 60 $6, Members $5, Students are always Free, and Supervised Children under 6 are also Free. Harvest Time
Call to Artists April
2018
“Bountiful Harvest”
Art is food for the soul. Let’s
make art about FOOD: planning, planting, growing and harvesting food, food
preparation, food on a table, people cooking or eating food.
Let’s celebrate it! Please bring non-perishable food donations
along with your art on drop-off day and/or to the
reception.
Art Drop-Off Day: Wed. April 4th at 2 pm
(We’re giving you lots of forewarning on this
theme for those of you who like to have the time to create something
new.)
Attached is the Call to Artist paperwork and entry form. Let
me know if you cannot open it and need it opened in an email.
Also—if you have not seen the current show it is a lovely
memorial grouping of Arlene Tinsley’s art work and some wonderful
interpretations of “On the Road”.

Celebrate
You are invited to help celebrate our friend Arlene and her art this Sunday,
January 7th from 1-3 at SCHHC reception for the "On the Road" show,
showcasing local artists and their interpretations of the theme. Mark
Tierney is playing guitar during the event.
Bandon's hospital is located at the east end of 11th.
Arlene Tinsley, who passed away November 22, 2017, was involved in many art
projects along the south coast including both plein air groups, and was one
of Art by the Sea Gallery's founding members. Arlene had a distinct art
style in her paintings and in the recycled bag purses and origami creations
she made. She had a strong sense of justice and was a supporter of global
animal (and people) rights. She loved anything zebra, as well as elephants
and giraffes and was always up for a road trip. : )
