Flicker Little Firefly

BAY AREA — Learn how to swing your partner, pick a tune for dancers or lead a group in a sing-along during South Coast Folk Week Oct. 4-10.
It’s a week of contra dances, concerts, singing and workshops for people of all ages who want to have fun with traditional American song, music and dance.
The South Coast Folk Society is presenting South Coast Folk Week with help from its affiliated national organization, the Country Dance and Song Society. The Country Dance and Song Society chose the South Coast Folk Society as one of six communities in North America to throw a week-long festival to celebrate the national organization’s 100th anniversary.
The Country Dance and Song Society is sending Bob Dalsemer, a dance caller, and Firefly, a string band, from North Carolina, to the South Coast for Folk Week. By day, Bob and the band will visit local schools and introduce high school and college students to contra dance, a traditional American dance form similar to square dancing. Evening activities for the whole community include three contra dances, concerts, and a sing-along. Bob and Firefly will also teach workshops about how to lead groups in singing, how to play music for dancers, how to be a better contra dancer and how to get started as a contra dance caller.
Absolutely no experience is needed to attend the contra dances or sing-alongs; if you can walk, you can contra dance. The caller walks you through every dance; just wear comfortable clothes and clean shoes. All events are admission by donation.
A schedule of some of the Folk Week events is below. To learn more about workshops for song leaders, dancers and musicians, visit www.southcoastfolkweek.com.

Crystal Gazing

Crystal Landucci

Jewelry designer Crystal Landucci will be the featured artist for the "Meet & Greet" at Second Street Gallery in Bandon Saturday, September 26 from noon to 4pm. Landucci will set up a mini-jewelry workshop in the gallery and will be working on a number of pieces.

Landucci's pieces incorporate hand-forged sterling silver, brass, and bronze wire and sheet metal as well as semi-precious stones and found objects such as nuts and bolts, coins, charms, teeth, game tokens, and assorted flotsam and jetsam.   "I like jewelry that is entertaining and meaningful to the wearer - and, of course, it has to be beautiful too!"

Crystal is mostly self-taught  but has also taken classes from Kristin Mitsu Shiga at Oregon College of Arts and Crafts in Portland and Veneta Stender and Anne Sobbota at Sage Gallery in Bandon.  She was "hugely inspired” by attending a show of Alexander Calder's work in New York  City that included many of his jewelry and circus themed pieces a few years back.  Her work can be seen exclusively at Second Street Gallery in Bandon.

Bell, Book and High School

Hi all
We know a wonderful young lady, Brittney, who is the new part time librarian at the Harding building (part of Marshfield High School) and she is in need of SPECIFIC types of books - her request is as follows:
Brittney says: I’m looking specifically for young adult books. Think Eragon, Twilight, Hunger Games, etc. I will also go for children’s chapter books, like The Series of Unfortunate Events, the Percy Jackson series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, etc.
Our target audience is high school age (14-18). Obviously within that group there will be spectrum of reading levels, which is why we need a variety of books.
What I am NOT looking for are paperback romance novels or detective novels. Those are what usually what is  donated, and unfortunately not all of those are appropriate for a classroom library. If it is a popular book and in good condition, I’ll take a look at it.
I also wouldn’t mind taking books written in Spanish, so if you have any of those send them my way, because we currently have 0.
Talking to the kids, they tend to like fantasy, sci-fi, and real life issue books. Our English teacher told me they loved the book The Glass Castle, because a lot of them could relate.
Ron and I are willing to be the drop off point for these books so if you have something that fits the bill please let me know and we'll make arrangements.
Thanks!!

Folk Week Workshops

Part of South Coast Folk Week is the fabulous workshops taught by Firefly and Bob Dalsemer. There are workshops for musicians, workshops for dancers, workshops for aspiring dance callers and a workshop for song leaders. You can see them all at www.southcoastfolkweek.com.

It's not essential, but the organizers and instructors would appreciate it if you'd RSVP for the workshops you want to attend, just so we have an idea of how many people are coming. We've set up registration on Eventbrite.com to make that easier. Just go to Eventbrite.com and search for South Coast Folk Week. All you have to give them is your email address. There's no charge, although we'll be passing the hat at the door.

If you can't bear to use Eventbrite, email Gail Elber, gailelber@gmail.com, and tell her what workshops you're coming to.

Hope to see you there!

P.S. Don't forget: the first contra dance of the regular season is Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. at Greenacres Grange.

P.P.S. And the first international folk dance is Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at Greenacres Grange.

P.P.S. Have you renewed your membership? You can do it online at http://wordpress.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=727bcda7b9a3cb6201829cfc7&id=db889d686a&e=47261c8db2. Or come it an event and do it there.
