Join the South Coast Folk Society for an enjoyable evening of contra dancing at the Greenacres Grange Hall on Saturday evening, January 10. This public event features three hours of great live music, instruction, and a guest caller from Myrtle Point. Karen Olsen will teach the basics of contra dance at 7PM. Karen has years of experience and loves to call exciting dances that are easy to learn and fun for all ages and abilities. Singles, couples and families can all attend this monthly gathering. New dancers are welcome to experience this new, light-hearted form of social dancing. The dances are so easy to learn that all levels of experience will enjoy dancing together.
Music for our January 10th dance will be provided by The South Coast Open Contra Band. These talented musicians volunteer their time and talent to practice and then play for our local gatherings, and their music is wonderful. They play an exciting blend of very danceable music. Prepare to tap you feet to their beat as you do-si-do and swing your partner.

Week Folk
Hello friends of South Coast Folk Society!
We
are just days away from January 1, the beginning of Country Dance and
Song Society's (CDSS) centennial celebration! As our umbrella
organization turns 100 in 2015, we are excited to be part of that
celebration. During South Coast Folk Week, Oct 4-10, 2015, Coos County
will be a stop on the CDSS centennial tour.
As
we plan and prepare for the arrival of legendary dance caller Bob
Dalsemer and the talented members of the band Firefly, the steering
committee wants to keep you informed about Folk Week activities, and
encourage your participation. If you aren't familiar with this project,
read the attached overview or visit the SCFS website http://southcoastfolksociety.wordpress.com/cdss-tour/ or Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/southcoastfolkweek.
We need SO much help with this ambitious project! Can we count on you?
1. HOUSING We are looking for home stays for our visitors. Do you have an extra bedroom(s) and the gift of hospitality?
2.
FOOD We'll feed the staff three meals/day for a week. We'll have some
community potlucks. Many of you are avid gardeners. As you plan this
year's garden, consider growing a row for Folk Week! Consider hosting
our group of musicians for one dinner while they're in town providing
this service to our community. Are you a catcher of fish? Fish BBQ at
your place one night for the staff? Do you own a restaurant and want to
be a business sponsor by donating a meal for a staff?
We've
thought of several ways you can help with food - maybe you can think of
others. Lynn Danner is our hospitality coordinator - to volunteer help
with housing or food, contact Lynn davidlynndanner at gmail dot com.
3.
GET THE WORD OUT We have a group of speakers ready to attend a meeting
of your club or organization to talk about South Coast Folk Week. Need a
speaker? Contact Stacy rosecontra@gmail.com
4.
MONEY We're accepting donations! The steering committee decided that in
an effort to keep activities affordable for families and youth, Folk
Week activities will be admission by donation. Still, we'll have
expenses for venue rentals, sound equipment, sound technician, printing,
etc.,etc. If all of our folk friends saved their loose change for the
next 6 months, that would accumulate into a significant donation! Or
just write us a check.
5.
VOLUNTEER Will you be around the week of October 4? Can we call on you
to help, whether it's sweeping a floor before the dance, helping to pack
sack lunches for the staff one day, posting flyers around town? Reply
to this email and let the steering committee know we can count on you.
Flood us with your support! Overwhelm us with community support for this
project!
The
next phone conference with our staff will be in January, so I'm hoping
our next update will include a schedule of activities for Folk Week. The
steering committee for South Coast Folk Week wishes you a very happy
new year, with as much dance, music and song as you can hold!
Cheers!
Stacy Rose, for South Coast Folk Week

He knows if You've been Bad or Good
Hope you get more than lumps of coal in your stockings. No, you cannot have a Playboy Bunny in her stockings. Just think of what the Long Sufferin would say.
So gather round the ole yule log and sip a cup of eggnog and eat the fatted cod fish and have a very wonderful holiday
Happy Holiday from the South Coast Trawler
You know that eggnog was originally an egg custard drink mixed with ale? So have a Bud and a Nog and get wild and crazy.

IN MORE DETAIL
Coos
Art Museum welcomes award-winning artist Sharon Wise for an intensive
3-day “Realism in Watercolor” Workshop Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday,
March 9, 10 and 11, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A master at
capturing light, Sharon will share how to convey reflected and refracted
colors and highlights as seen mirrored by a silver pot, through a
crystal vase or as it travels through flower petals. By pushing the
limits of the dry brush technique in transparent watercolor the many
layers of paint through color and shadows are revealed, producing the
effect of an oil painting on canvas. Workshop participants will
cultivate the same unparalleled skills in creating their own
representational paintings.
Sharon
Wise is a 2014 CAM Biennial Honorable Mention recipient for her
exquisitely detailed watercolor painting Eagles Nest and the First Place
Winner of the 2012 CAM Biennial People’s Choice Award, for which she
received a solo exhibition at Coos Art Museum.
Fee
for the 3-day, adults only workshop is $175 for CAM members, $190 for
non-members. Participants should be familiar with painting using
watercolor and be of intermediate to advanced skill level. Class size is
restricted to 6 participants minimum, 12 maximum. Registration ends
February 28, 2015. For online registration visit www.coosart.org or contact the Art Education Dept. at (541) 267-3901 or sldonaldson@coosart.org.

Get a Life
This is absolutely, definitely, certainly the last chance for you to see It's a Wonderful Life at the Dolphin theater in beautiful, downtown Empire.
Now you know you are sick to death of the Jimmy Stewart version and to tell the whole truth did you every, really buy Jimmy as George? No of course not, the Marlo Thomas version, It Happened One Christmas is so much better and besides it has Orson Wells as Potter and that's enough said.
But now you have a chance to see a live theater version right here in the beautiful Bay area and it would be a terrible shame to miss it and you wouldn't want people to say that YOU don't support local theater and you can take the Long Sufferin and get some extra points which will come in handy when she finds out what you bought yourself for Christmas and you can get away from the kids with all that sugar energy making even the dog hide and then when you get home no one will yell and scream when you turn on the football game which comes on after the 2:00 showing and you'll look like a big hero and not just the thing on the sofa.
So crack open the wallet, it's good for the moths to get a breath of fresh air every now and then and shell out the twenty bucks which you were just going to spend on beer and take the Long Sufferin and see a really great show and start the New Year as a good guy and not the dork you were all last year and wouldn't that be nice for a change, so go see It's a Wonderful Life and remember no beasts, no breasts, angel-foo, bell-foo, merriment-foo, Trawler-Bob says check it out!
Saturday, December 20, 2014
It was a dark and stormy night
Why sit around waiting for the power to go out when you can join the Dolphin Players for their production of It's a Wonderful Life. You know you're going to watch it anyway so why not enjoy the excitement of live theater?
Theater is life
Film is art
television is furniture!
Besides if you come tonight you get to see The Ole Trawler himself taking the tickets and helping around the theater.
Now what could be better, great theater and seeing The Ole Trawler working, a sight seldom seen this century!
And you can do all of this and eat popcorn and drive in the rain and for only $10.00! You'd blow that on two lattes. Even less if you are a certified old fart or a small child. Children are $5 dollars and the senile rate is $8 so don't miss a chance to get something for letting your arteries harden!
And if you claim to be a small child you'd better be accompanied by a responsible parent. Try to find one of those on short notice.
