Get Real

AN ABSTRACT REALITY
A showing and studio sale of the paintings, photographs and collages of Gan Martin and his daughter Ferne Martin on August 30th at Black Market Gourmet.  A public reception will be held from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Sunday August 30th.  The show will remain hanging at Black Market Gourmet through the end of October.

Gan Martin (1937-2004) was born and raised in Buhl. Idaho.  He lived and worked in Coos Bay for over 40 years where he was the visual merchandiser for "The Hub" department store, owner and operator of the GEM Sign Company and eventually focused on his art full time.  His education in the arts included study at the Chicago Art Academy, Willamette University and Portland Art Museum School as well as workshops and mentor relationships in the art community.  Martin's understanding of composition and his fascination with detail and expressive color makes his works both vibrant and timeless.

Ferne Martin was born and raised in Coos Bay.  She left the area to attend college in Alaska and remained there, teaching for approximately 15 years.  She now lives in Northern California where she teaches math and science to middle school students.  While many of her photos  are printed directly from their raw images, her greatest enjoyment comes from the manipulation and layering of images to create collage-type images that emphasize contrasts both physically and conceptually.

Please plan to join us on Sunday August 30th for complimentary hors d'eouvre and no-host bar.

Made of Clay

Greetings esteemed members of the South Coast clay arts community and community at large,

* What: A Community Raku Firing *** held in conjunction with The Village Gym's Grand Opening

* Who: Hosted by The Clay Room at The Village Gym, Langlois, Oregon.

* When: Sunday August 30, 2015 1:00 PM to 4:00... or later if we still have Pots, Participants, and Propane.

* Where: Hwy 101 to Langlois, turn in at the red brick school. (Langlois is a vital community half way between Bandon by the Sea and Port Orford.)

* Why: Do we need to ask why?

*** Propane fuel for the kilns is provided by the Port Orford Arts Council.
Raku kilns and glazes are provided by The Clay Room and community member donations.

If you participate, bring bisqued pots, favorite raku glazes if you have some, and sturdy clothing, shoes, and safety eye wear. Face shields, aprons, tongs and gloves are provided.

We will do bisque firings at The Clay Room the week before the event. Contact David.

If wishing but unable to make pots in time, or pots at all, we have an abundance to share. So if you put your creative efforts into glazing a pot and participate in the firing, the pot is yours to keep.

*** If you come to spectate and "ooh and ah" over the excitingly immediate firing process and the colors and forms coming from the kilns firing to near 1800 degrees fahrenheit, you also need to wear appropriate clothing and eye protection because the excitement will draw you in close to the action.

Sheltered, rain or shine.

Learn from one of the area’s most imaginative and skilled artists in a two-day, adults-only Experimental Drawing workshop Friday, October 16 and Saturday, October 17, 2015 from 10:30a.m. to 2:30p.m. at Coos Art Museum.  Renowned local artist, printmaker and art educator Pat Snyder will share with workshop participants the kinetics of abstract drawing and painting, with emphasis on the drawing component.

Students will work in an individualized and spacious setting, solving challenges and engaging in activities designed to take them through the process of creating and examining the non-objective approach to art making. Participants will journey away from the traditional descriptive and narrative art processes and through this unique method of learning will augment artwork by cultivating subconscious and nonverbal expressions.

Check out all the new features of the Blackberry Arts Festival (listed below) and help us spread the word.  Bring your family and friends, tell your customers.

Come celebrate downtown with us!

New Features at the Coos Bay Downtown Association's Blackberry Arts Festival This Weekend.

(Coos Bay) - The Coos Bay Downtown Association welcomes visitors this weekend to the Annual Blackberry Arts Festival in downtown Coos Bay.  The festival features juried arts and crafts hand-made by local and regional vendors. It also features delicious blackberry treats by food vendors.  A staple at the festival each year is the PEO Blackberry Pies.  Festival-goers are encouraged to get their piece of the pie early for the best selection.  Whole pies will also be sold. Other food vendors will feature the blackberry as well. This year, several Coos Bay eateries will feature blackberry-inspired dishes. Look for the "berry cool" Blackberry Arts Festival logo in participating business' windows.
  • 7 Devils Brewery, 247 S. 2nd, CB - Blackberry beer, soda and dessert
  • Benetti's Italian Restaurant, 260 S. Broadway, CB - Salmon blackberry salad and blackberry dessert
  • Cakes with Jazz, 164 Market St., CB - Blackberry cupcakes (Saturday only)
  • City Subs, 149 N. 4th, CB - Blackberry ice cream
  • Coney Station, 295 S. Broadway, CB - Blackberry pie
  • Outdoor In 305 S. 4th, CB - Blackberry ice cream
  • Sugar Shack Bakery (Vern & Angie's), 63023 Highway 101, CB   - Blackberry donuts and breads
The Blackberry Arts Festival celebrates its 33rd year and features the "Blackberry Jam Stage" sponsored by K-DOCK Sound and Music.  Music by Done Deal, Charlie Freak and Bobby Lindstrom's annual reunion of Elkhorn Express will be featured this year.  The Bay Area Teen Idol semi-finals will feature the best of the season at 2pm.  Bay Area Teen Idol is the premiere vocal competition for Coos County and western Douglas County teens.

Also new this year is the increased participation of the Coos Art Museum (CAM).  The museum features free admission this weekend and special hours from 10am to 4pm on Saturday and 1pm to 4pm on Sunday.  CAM will also offer free Zentangle mini lessons on the half hour from 11am to 2:30pm on Saturday with materials and goodie bags provided for the first 12 in each session.  The non-profit museum welcomes donations and is located at 235 Anderson Avenue, Coos Bay.

There will also be a community "drumming circle," your chance to make some noise with other drummers.  This family-friendly event happens from noon until 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22 on Second Street between 2 Swans Bakery and Checkerberry's Flowers & Gifts. This is a community-wide event.  Even if you don't own a drum, participate by bringing a bucket, a box or anything on which you can drum.

The festival began as a way to feature local artists and crafters.  You can find art, photography, woodworks, soaps, candles, jewelry and more from Pacific Northwest artists and crafters.  The festival celebrates the annual harvest of the Blackberry.  It takes place at the peak of the Blackberry season on the Oregon Coast. The festival is open from 9am - 6pm on Saturday, August 22nd and 10am to 4pm on Sunday, August 23rd. For more information, visit www.coosbaydowntown.org or like the Coos Bay Downtown Association's Facebook page.

Right Side Out

inside/outside
a show of prison art by those recently released and those still behind bars in the Oregon Prison System
month of SEPTEMBER/ BANDON PUBLIC LIBRARY
OPENING RECEPTION:thursday, September 3rd, 5-8pm
Sprague Room/ music and refreshments

Dear Friends, I hope you can join us for the opening of this exhibit of mostly new works and some older ones by Oregon Prison artists, many whose work you have seen before at the hospital, the library, Sage Gallery, Black Market Gourmet, and the Coos Art Museum.  As many of you know, this has been a project dear to my heart.  Some of the new work is by artists we have never shown before; some is by artists working in new mediums and tackling new subject matter.  The image above is one of a series of hand-drawn cards sent by my son to family members which will be shown as part of the exhibit; hand-made cards are a special category of prison art, since there are very few gifts prisoners can send to their loved ones.  Many artists create cards not only for their family members, but for the families of other inmates as well.  The exhibit will be in both the display cases and in the corridor at the Bandon Library in September. Hope to see you on the 3rd.

HELP! BLACKBERRY FESTIVAL
We're having a booth at Blackberry Festival this weekend, and we could use some volunteers to hand out flyers and spread the good word about our activities and Folk Week. If you're interested, email southcoastfolksociety@gmail.com.

HELP! OTHER THINGS
1. Folk Week committee needs someone to make phone calls to reach out to contact people in various organizations around town and invite them to Folk Week. Script provided. Email Gail Elber, gailelber@gmail.com.
2. SCFS has a booth at Farmer's Market every Wednesday 10-1. We need people to hand out flyers, play tunes, help set up/take down the booth. Email Jennifer Sordyl, violinjenn@gmail.com.
3. All Folk Week events are admission by donation. Anyone have an empty coffee can(s) with lid that can be decorated to accept donations? Maybe you have a more artistic solution? Email Stacy Rose, rosecontra@gmail.com.

WHOM WILL YOU BRING?
Did you know that if you bring a friend (who has never been to a contra dance) to any Folk Week dance, both you and the friend will get a free admission to a subsequent dance? Good deal.
