Hello Everyone,
We will be painting at the Port Orford Public Library on Monday, August 2nd, from 12-3 p.m.
Lani will be modeling for life drawing. The cost is $65 to be divided among those who attend. Thanks to Georganne White for organizing this great opportunity to hone our skills, and to Lani for modeling.
We enjoyed painting at Art 101 last Monday. The ocean creatures that Angela and volunteers are constructing are amazing. Please take time to check them out. She can really use some more volunteers if you, or anyone you know can help them finish up these creatures for the upcoming 'really big show'.
Thanks.
Ava

Not FINE ART
No Irish, No Photographers need apply, okay so I paraphrased a turn of the century sign, but the unfortunate message is painfully familiar. I just encountered another juried show where photographs are not welcome.
Yes, indeed any organizer may set the rules to allow any media they want, but why is it so common for juries to bar photographs.
This latest bar came in a snidely worded message stating, “Photographs are rightly ‘decorative arts’, not FINE ART at all…” Okay, then a photograph wouldn’t have a chance of being juried in, so why ban it in the first place?
The discovery of the “lost” negatives of Ansel Adams has set the New York art world aflame. These plates were thought to have been lost in a studio fire in the thirties. Now after years of being counted among the missing they’ve surfaced and the horns and bells are ring in the news. These glass negatives have been valued at two hundred million and yes, there are those who say they are forgeries, but the thrill remains, Ansel Adams lost photographs have been found!
So there is some photography which qualifies as FINE ART.
Nope I’m not Ansel Adams. In fact I’m more in line with Pompeo Posar, Francesco Scuvallo or Peter Gowland and it has been hard to adjust to finding the beauty in nature and the vast expanses of the Pacific Northwest, where people in pictures makes them hard to place and awards go to sailing ships and birds.
And no, I have the most extreme admiration for the naturalist photographs of the brilliant Kelle Herrick, the tiny, fragile, but exquisitely carved birds of Ron Wright and the maritime works of Dutch Mosart; it’s just not my thing.
Art is supposed to expand the mind, challenge the spirit and touch the heart and there are no rules about how to do that. Yes, in the hands of a gifted painter like Kim Wurster, wildlife becomes so jewel-like it rivals the masterpieces of Faberge, and when Stephanie Donaldson paints a buffalo, there is just a bit of Alton Kelly lurking and why not? But why can’t a photograph do the same?

View From Another Room
For those who have been following the Trawler, a small select few, I thought another voice might be a welcome change. This link takes you to one of the best sites on the net, The Skinny Artist. You would be doing yourself a favor if you spent some time there and had a look at all of the features offered by this tremendous site, but for those with ADD, take a look at this one little article. You'll find it painfully insightful and maybe even eye-opening. Then subscribe so that I don't have to take space away from my own meaningless ramblings and post all the juicy links here.

Prolific and talented South Coast artist S. L. Donaldson is no longer a well kept secret. It seems that from now on we will have to share her with the rest of the Net. Skinny Artist has selected her as one of the 21 Artists to Watch 2010. What you ask is Skinny Artist and why should I care? So nice of you to ask, Skinny Artist is, strangely enough, a blog, (What another one, yes, Virginia we're everywhere) and a good one. Now you should already be a subscriber to South Coast Trawler so it isn't going to siphon off the Trawler's audience and you can never have too much art info, so sign up. There's a nifty item on RSS Feeds for the non-geeky, a spotlight on our own S. L Donaldson and well perhaps I should let the guys on the job explain, http://skinnyartist.com/what-is-skinny-artist/
So when you step away from the canvas, wheel, loom, clay, bead rack or some other unsavory interest like feeding or watering the person in the artist, take a look at Skinny Artist. There may just be something there for you and you don't want to be the last person on the block to get the story of S. L. Donaldson and her rise to fame fortune and an appearance on Letterman! No silly not yet, but Letterman is sure to come if the world beats a path to her door. So go, what are you waiting for? I gave you the link all you have to do is click it.

Easy Lane Frames and Select Gallery News
Our featured show for July will be the work of new gallery artist, Jean Kyle. Jean was an elementary teacher in Coos Bay until retiring a few years ago. She has taken up her watercolors with a passion. Jean took first place in the watercolor division of the BAAA juried show this year with her “Tale of Two Cities” painting of the North Bend Hotel and Broiler. Jean has taken classes from Barbara Mahon, Jane Snoddy, Donna Wright and Fred Vasser. She has a vibrant pallet and is a master at negative painting. Come and view some of her latest work and welcome her to the gallery. Many of her new pieces have originated with a pour which she then brings into focus. Her work is exciting and full of life. This show will open for ArtWalk on July 8th and be featured until August 10th.

17th Annual Maritime Juried Exhibit
Last night The Coos Art Musuem opened the 17th Annual Maritime Art Exhibit with a Plein Air paint out, dinner and silent auction and one helluva good time. Maybe it was the simple, but beautiful music provided by Candace Krietlow and her magical harp. (I knew she was coming and had heard her at the Finely Wrought opening, so I brought my lunch money, from home and bought a CD. ya git to have a plan.) Maybe it was the wonderful food served by The Coachhouse. (Went there for lunch Tuesday so I knew all about them too. The worst thing that can happen when to check things out early is you get a fantastic meal.) It could have been all of the work and organization the museum staff did before anyone arrived, maybe the participating artists or the thoughtful selection of the juried entries or maybe it was magic. Everyone had a good time...
Emily had a word before the festivities got under way...
Steven checked over his notes...
Carla watched from the wings...
Del listened...
Dutch listened...
And Liz made sure everyone had something to make all the listening light...
John and Archi double-checked the awards list...
Anne and Jan waited with baited breath...
When all was said and done everyone was pleased, not so bad for an event that's been done before, but never so well. Thanks to all who worked so hard to make the Maritime opening such a success and to all who opened their wallets, (that's right, the husbands and boyfriends who were drafted to nod and pay), and to those few, those precious few, who stayed to clean up!

Nude or Prude?
Earlier I asked if the Nude had fallen out of fashion in art and if so why. This article apperaed on CNN's site and it has an interesting perspective on the whole issue. If the discussion interests you follow the link and have a look at what Rick Steves travell pro has to say about the Fig-leaf fear and all of its implications. And if the whole controversy makes you what to shout "shut up!" and grab your sketch book, you can contact Dana at dana.amarisa@verizon.net and join the few, the brave, the Bandon artists and do a weekly Life drawing class.

AVA RICHEY'S ART NEWS
Hello Everyone,
We will be painting at New River this coming Monday, July 19th, from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. at the invitation of Heather Lester with the BLM. Muddy Lake is beautiful with the pond flowers, also the River and trails. It is located 5 miles south of Bandon on Hwy 101. at the west end of Croft Lake Ln. Watch for the sign that says New River. The road is paved and wanders through cranberry bogs to the park near the ocean. Stay on the paved road and when the road forks stay to the right on the paved road, then you will go through a gate and will see the New River sign.
The walk and sketch on Sunday at New River was enjoyable, and we had a good turnout at Dutch John Pond in Coquille last Monday. Thanks to all of you who participated in these events, and also in the upcoming Coquille Trails fundraiser in Coquille on Saturday.
The "Finely Wrought" show at Southern Coos Hospital is wonderful. Hope you all make time to go see it.
On a sad note, one of our fellow painters, Robert Rolicheck, passed away earlier this week. We will miss him. Our condolences go out to Sally and family. If you would like to send a card to Sally, the address is 3029 Sheridan Ave., North Bend, OR 97459.
Thanks. My phone is 347-4643 or 297-6118.

CRAFTING TRASH INTO TREASURE
It is never a surprise when Angela Haseltine Pozzi creates some new wonder from the stuff we throw away, but this time she has made magic from the most common and senselessly discarded trash on the Oregon coast. The ubiquitous bottled water we buy by the bushel and then throw out the windows or drop where we stand has become a giant Man of War jellyfish floating not in the surf, but at the giant purple yurt at Art 101.
Ms Pozzi has been involved in a major quest to clean up Oregon's beaches and make art at a single stroke. This project is reaching its zenith and the results will be unveiled at Newport's Visual Art Center on August 13.
And while Newport has stolen a march on our local venues, have no fear the Washed Ashore project will have its South Coast opening at the Coos Art Museum in February of next year.
The choice is clear, get in the car and run up to Newport or wait for the opening at CAM, but don't procrastinate, great art waits for no one and if you miss it you will be the worse for it.

THE DOUBLE EVENT
Bandon is never satisfied to be the most art friendly town on the coast, they have to be bigger, better and brighter than all the other kids on the playground. On Sunday Bandon once again proved that they know how to do it right. The Finely Wrought show opened at Southern Coos Hospital while just down the street at Sage Gallery, three of the most gifted artists in the area spent their afternoon giving away their secrets. In the boutique setting of Sage Gallery's main showroom Pat Snyder, Janne LaValle and Susan Lehman captivated an audience of master artists with the tricks of the collage trade.
Pat works on his piece while Janne works the room...
Susan just works...
The audience watched the magic in silence...
while the master magicians turned style into substance...
Some had to stand to see The Big Picture...
Every eye was on the three miracle workers...
Even those who needed a little help to get a head above the crowd...
The usual suspects were there...
Even with the press of the crowd Pat stayed focused...
Sharon moved in for a closer look...
When it was all said and done, everyone had a great time, learned a lot and wished many thanks to Pat snyder, Janne LaValle and Susan Lehman. And to Anne Sobotta and Sage Gallery for keeping Bandon the head of the class.

THE DOUBLE EVENT
The good folks in Bandon are never satisfied with doing well, they have to do it better and they did this Sunday with a double event, the Finely Wrought show at the Southern Coos Hospital and at Sage Gallery, a demonstration of skill and co-operation with Janne Lavalle, Pat Snyder and Susan Lehman supplying the skill and patience.
At the hospital, Kimberly Wurster, Steven Thor Johannsen, Janet Trajan Erl, and Steven Abbott lined the halls with art so fine that the artists wept, the crowds cheered and Victoria smiled a knowing smile.
The Bandon Three plotted quietly in the hallway...
Even the husbands of the renown and famous had time to exchange a quiet word...
Kimberly Wurster took time to give the visitors a personal word...
The art made the crowd pause for a brief discussion...
Ms Kim was right there to explain or expand on the underlying vision behind the image...
Victoria handled the only authorized camera...
There were distinguished guests...
Kim was everywhere...
There was soft, sweet music...
And even visiting artists left with a smile.

Hello Everyone,
Thank you to all who are participating in the July Plein Air show at Gallery by the Bay, 2100 Union Blvd., North Bend.
It's a nice show and I hope you get to see it. The Gallery is open Mon., Wed. Friday from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
This Monday, July 12th we will be painting at Dutch John Pond, on the Coquille River near downtown Coquille, 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
When you reach the traffic light on HWY 42 in Coquille, turn SW toward the River ( 1/2 a block) and park near the trees. It's a short walk to this painting spot. And it's close to downtown for restaurants, etc.
If you would like to help out the fundraising for the Coquille River Trail, you can donate a painting for the sale on Saturday, July 17th. Paintings will be returned that don't sell. They do not have to be framed...can be matted and in a clear bag, or painted on a canvas that can be hung.
Also, if you donate one, you are welcome to hang others of your paintings for sale. Show is over on Saturday and paintings will be returned that night. I can deliver and pick them up for you if you aren't going to attend. If you are there Saturday you can paint in the gardens that are on the Garden Tour. Can also sell cards and prints at reception (wine, live music) from 4- 6 p.m. Saturday, July 17th.
Call me for more information or to make arrangements for paintings.
541-347-4643 or cell 541-297-6118.
Thanks.

A Fish Story
If this story appeared on a television movie of the week there would be roars of triumph, tears of joy and a stirring round of applause, but it won't, the artist at the center of the storm is far too busy creating new work to be drawn back into a time warp. And why not, not every artist can make work that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally friendly. Who is this miracle worker, with a back story worthy of literature and a gift for art that makes trash into treasure? Angela Haseltine Pozzi the force behind Art 101 and the creative whirlwind who designed the Washed Ashore project.
And the project is scheduled to open in Newport if such an organic being can be said to open, like its creator it never slows down long enough for there to be an ending. Even when it is on public exhibit the project will invite people to reclaim beach refuse and add it to the Washed Ashore project.
So pack your overnight bag and head up the coast road to see Angela Haseltine Pozzi's Washed Ashore and if you have been teased by hints of a back story follow the link to Oregon Live where Katy Muldoon will tell you the whole story.

A Collaborative Event
JOIN US at SAGE Gallery on Sunday, July 11th, 2:30-5:30 as
Pat Snyder, Susan Lehman, and Janne LeValle unite to do a
demonstration of the collaborative process. They will share
their views on this approach to art making and will each
bring a "start" on paper to exchange during this creative
exercise. You'll learn some amazing things as you observe
their use of paint, layered tissue, fabric and more. The
demo is free to All. Separate/Together is the title of the
collage show and visitors have been intrigued to get a
glimpse of the "process" behind the artwork. If you haven't
taken the time to read the artists' statements that
accompany the show, be sure to give these a little extra
time. It's not as easy as it sounds to give up the artist's
ego and vulnerability and let someone else work on your
masterpiece!

Cutting edge art
Hidden off the beaten track there is a little bit of Japan in the coastal hills of Oregon. Coquille is home to the Dragonfly Forge, traditional Japanese Katana works and dojo.
The owner, Michael Bell is both artist and magician, for he takes the basest of metals, recycled logging cable and with sweat and hammer, heat and inspiration creates the intricately folded Japanese weapon of the Samurai.
The katana is a type of single-edged sword, not necessarily of Japanese manufacturer. The katana is a blade, curved, slender and single-edged with a circular or square guard and a long grip to allow the use of two hands. It was used by the samurai in feudal Japan and is legendary for its cutting ability.
The secret to the katana is in the making, hard high-carbon steel is folded around low-carbon steel allowing the metal smith to take advantage of the characteristics of both varieties. The process usually uses sixteen or fewer folds, but can use as many as the smith feels necessary. The finished blade has both a fine edge capable of slicing through amour like butter and still meeting an enemy’s sword with the strength of an iron bar.
The graceful curve of the katana comes during the quenching process, the sudden cooling in water or oil which gives the blade its fine edge. The smith uses his own special slurry which allows some of the blade to be protected from the effects of the heat while allowing complete heating of the uncovered part.
One mistake in this process and the blade shatters and the sword is lost. It takes both a fine understanding of the smithing process and a little bit of alchemy to get all of the elements to align, but when it does, the result is both deadly and fine art.
The dragonfly is revered by both Native American and Japanese cultures; it symbolizes strength and courage, swiftness and purity, small wonder that the master sword maker has chosen it as the symbol of his brand of art.
Take advantage of this unique opportunity to enjoy a rare and unique art form, but call ahead and ask politely, remember it is never wise to offend a samurai.
