Three Golden Rules

“Location! Location! Location!” You are invited to a reception for the artists at Oregon Bay Properties/Oregon Community Gallery at the corner of Virginia and Hwy. 101 South in North Bend on Friday, July 20th from 4-7 pm.

There will be refreshments and music by Mark Tierney. Featured artist is Janne LaValle from Lakeside but there is a large group of others (see poster below). Show is up through December 2018.

Sewing Room

Greetings friends.  Last year we decided to convert the entryway to our house in the woods into a sewing room . ( Mark was getting tired of woodchips from guitar-making falling on his Bernina). In the 41 years I have been living in the woods outside Bandon , that room has been filling up with works of my own plus a number I have collected created by my wonderful artist friends.  So when the lovely folks at EVERGREEN COURT called to ask if I could have a show there in July and August, I decided to pull out some of my favorites to share with all of you.  

You are welcome to stop by any day from 7am to 7pm but if you would like to meet the artist and enjoy music and refreshments please stop by on SUNDAY JULY 22 from 1-3.

Old Town, Bandon 541-347-5355 July:   Tues.  July 17 – Introduction to Oil Pastel with Kathleen Morey Bailey & Robin Hanna  All supplies included.  11-3:30  $35   Thurs.  July 12 – Pastel on a Dark Ground with Jean Stephenson  11:30-3:00  There will be a short break around 12:30 or 1:00.  $35   Wed.  July 18 – Collage Group  There is no specific instruction, just bring your own project, materials, and ideas to share.  1-3:00  $5   Sat.  July 21 – Watercolor Fundamentals with Terry Magill  Sketch the Bandon Waterfront, then paint using watercolors.  Paintings from real life.  10:30-3:00  There will be a lunch break.  $36  Bring your own watercolors & brushes, paper, palette, water cup & pencils, if you have them.  Terry will have materials to use upon request.   **Sat.  July 28 – Restructured Surfaces  with Carol Jones   Students will build layers of paper scraps using a specific adhesive, which dries to form a non-tacky transparent layer called a skin that bonds to all the disparate bits of paper.  A stable, yet flexible backing for the papers is achieved and this can be cut to make cards used in a collage or to cover a book or journal.  Each “skin” is unique because of the papers selected by each student and the results are always exciting.  Carol will be sharing a batch of newly purchased oriental themed papers, as well as many other colorful and unique papers.  12-3:00  $35  All materials included. August:   Tues.  Aug. 14 – Pen & Ink and Watercolor with Kathleen Morey Bailey & Robin Hanna  12-3:30  $35  All materials included.   Sat.  Aug. 18 – Transforming Local Bullwhip Kelp into a Vessel with Carol Jones    Learn how to transform locally harvested bullwhip kelp into a vessel that will be your very own unique creation.  Cut, sew and embellish wetted kelp pieces in a matter of 4-5 hours.  Take home a piece that will bring you pride and joy.  11-4:00   $65  All materials included.  Maximum of 6 students.   Wed.  Aug. 29 – Collage Group  There is no specific instruction, just bring your own project, materials, and ideas to share.  1-3:00  $5   Sat.  Aug. 25 – Painting with Natural Materials with Pam Haunschild  Use natural materials such as leaves and stones, along with watercolors.  10-4:00  $75  All materials included.   **Shows where a change in the schedule has been made.   Contact ABTS Gallery at 541-347-5355 for more information.  Most classes have a materials list of what to bring with you.   **Sign up at ABTS Gallery at time of registration.  Preferred payment is cash or check.

COOS BAY SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK RETURNS WITH TWELFTH NIGHT

Now in their third year, Coos Bay Shakespeare in the Park presents William Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT in Mingus Park in Coos Bay. The production is free to the public and takes place for four performances in July.

Two twins shipwreck on a lost island. From his tower, a love-struck duke woos an icy countess lost to mourning. Below, the fools dance and deceive for a chance at destiny. Hearts beat like tempests, and the whirligig of time will have his revenges.

TWELFTH NIGHT is directed by John Beane and features Amanda McNulty, Scott Peters, Sabrina Gonzalez, Taylor Marchant, Curtis Buell, Kristin Hovenkotter-Greco, Joe Allen, Maxwell Freeman, Hassan Qadir, Jane Stebbins, Alex Dresser, Dylon Bessey, Rebecca Schwartz and David Jordan. It is assistant directed by Brenda Sund with dramaturgy by Nicole Freim and assistance from Daneal Doerr, stage management from Kathy Low, and costumes by Penny Peters.

TWELFTH NIGHT is presented with generous support from the Coquille Tribal Community Fund, Faith Lutheran Church, Farr’s True Value, and local businesses and donors.

Before each show at 3:15 we feature THE GREEN SHOW with the Side of the Tide Morris dancers, the Sapphire Sirens belly dancers, and seafaring shanty singers Finivarra and the Nor’Westers.

This year Coos Bay Shakespeare in the Park and the Coos Bay Public Library offers WORDS, WORDS, WORDS: Speaking Shakespeare’s Speech - a director’s symposium on the effect and communication of Shakespeare’s language, as well as a special look behind the scenes at TWELFTH NIGHT.

TWELFTH NIGHT performs Saturdays and Sundays, July 14, 15, 21, and 22, at 4pm in Mingus Park in Coos Bay. Blankets and picnics welcome. THE GREEN SHOW begins at 3:15PM. WORDS, WORDS, WORDS symposium is on Saturday June 30 from 11AM to 1PM at the Coos Bay Public Library, and after the final TWELFTH NIGHT PERFORMANCE at Mingus Park on July 22.

 The Ole Trawler was out and about yesterday, (had to retrieve my pics from the Southern Coos Hospital Show {Thanks Ava and Susan}and I had a close encounter of an artistic variety with artist Kaylen Bennett.

Now one look should tell you something special and extraordinary is going on here and of all places it was going on at the Bandon Saturday Framer's Market! 

Don't despair, you won't have to wait for next Saturday, you can being computer literate, which you all are of course being as how all artists have to be computer savvy cause they need to get their work out and they don't have any money to pay for expensive advertising and they need all of their money to keep the lights on and but supplies and that is why they have to be computer smart so that they can create Facebook and Instagram sites where they can post their art for free which is just the right amount seeing as how they have to save all of their money to pay bills unless they have won the Powerball but I haven't heard of a starving artists winning just some wretched, whining, working stiff frittering away their winnings on pointless stuff like clothes and food for their kids and what a frivolous waste of funds which could be spent on art supplies and why hasn't a deserving artist won now answer me that?

But merit aside, you can check out Kaylen's fantastic art by turning on your computer, you know how to do that right, and going to facebook.com/QuasiArtDesigns or IG:caelanthealien and soaking up some Sunday culture so that when Monday comes around you won't be left standing at the water cooler with nothing to contribute to the gossip except the World Cup, which with all of the favorites getting eliminated is looking like the next year's version of Survivor and no self-respecting artist would watch a reality show so you wouldn't want to have nothing but sports to talk about and besides with all of the boring sunny weather you can't really generate any excitement by talking about the weather so you'd better have some exciting art news to share or you'll be the office nerd and you wouldn't want that to happen

So have a look and make more of your weekend and then when Monday comes you can be the smartest person at the water-cooler and that will make Monday a day for celebration instead of a day when you throw the alarm across the room and pull the covers back over your head.
