The Greatest Show on Earth

A bit far afield from the South Coast but then we don't have a chance to see one of the most controversial and influential artists of the world in our own backyard.

Picasso showed the world a new way of seeing and brought a unique vision to art. He fractured the human form and deconstructed anatomy and from the ruins he made dramatic images scream off the canvas, Guernica is one of the most devastating antiwar images ever presented.

But do not think for one minute he did this because he could not draft an anatomically correct image. Take a look at his "Blue" period paintings and you will see he was a master draftsman.

Whether you delight in the passion and vision of the Impressionists or deplore their haphazard assault on the Rule of structure Picasso is one of the most significant artists of our time and should be part of any creative person's experience.

The Award Show

So you’ve decided that the show is up and you’ve seen as much as you want to see, so when is the next show?

Have you forgotten one little thing? There’s a People’s Choice Award to be awarded and you are the awarder? That’s right, you. If you think that a show without a jury is just a beauty contest then it probably is. If the serious, committed artists of the community sit idly by and don’t vote or don’t return to vote then it almost certainly will be a beauty contest won by the beauty who can bully, threaten and force all of their friends and family into the museum to vote.

Winner and still champion, the guy with the biggest family.

Is that what you want, the biggest show of the season, the most diverse and complex showing of art in the South Coast won by ballot stuffing?

If you don’t want that to happen why are you reading this when you could be at the Coos Art Museum voting? Vote, it is the right and duty of every person and unlike the political arena, there wondrous things to vote for. All you have to do is pick one.

There are just too many to pick one! I know too many people in the show I wouldn’t want to offend anyone by voting for just one. I don’t have time to study the entries and make an informed decision.

So you’ll let an uninformed opinion rendered by someone who doesn’t know any of the artists, made by closing their eyes and pointing get the private show?

There is great art, there are great artists, there is great variety and great diversity and all you have to do is vote. Vote for someone you know, vote for someone you like, vote for a piece which makes you dumb with its brilliance, but vote.

Vote for Susan Lehman, Kelle Herrick, Pat Snyder, Mike Holm, Kimberly Wurster, S. L. Donaldson if you prefer well known artists, or vote for the unknown like me if that makes you feel like you’ve been resourceful, vote for Jardin Kazar, maybe he’ll bribe you with food, vote for a photograph, a painting, a sculpture, a portrait, a nude, a mask, just vote.

This is the largest open show on the South Coast, artists plan for a full two years to prepare their pieces for this show. Make its winner worthy of all of the hope, planning and skill, vote for your favorite; make the People’s Choice Award really the choice of the people.

How to Put Pizzazz into Your Artist Statement

A description of why and how you create offers collectors, patrons, gallery owners and the viewing public, an indispensable portrait of you, the artist. As your work grows and changes, so does your Artist Statement. It’s a crucial document to have on hand at public hangings, to include with juried exhibition work, as well as with your sold pieces. By writing down the aim and/or ideals of your art, you’ll be able to speak confidently about your work at receptions and show openings. Elements from your Artist Statement will become incorporated into press releases and news articles.

Through games, fun exercises and role playing, we’ll arrange colorful phrases, collage facts, encourage our artist self to tell his or her story and then we’ll frame our “Artist Statement” with a quirk or a quote. Bring a pen, a notebook and a positive attitude.

Friday November 5, 2010 10 AM to 1 PM $35.

[$30 for Bay Area Artist Association members BAAA]

Easy Lane Frames 3440 Broadway, North Bend, OR 541 756-7638

Space is limited. Your check is your reservation.

Presented by Shinan N. Barclay, M.A., a well-published writer and multi-media artist, who had the good fortune to be cradled into a world of art. Her parents met in a watercolor class at the Chicago Arts Institute; they married and as artists, raised seven children. Her uncle, Rollo May, author of Love and Will and The Courage to Create, enlivened her passion for art. A former member of the San Diego Watercolor Society, Shinan wrote art reviews for the San Diego Museum of Modern Art. Later, living in Sedona Arizona she wrote reviews of artists and gallery openings, and was a member and keynote speaker for the Arizona Watercolor Society. Her watercolors, photographs, handmade tiles and ceramic art have each earned their own one-woman show. A member of BAAA, her work has been exhibited in the Maritime Exhibit, Artist Loft, Cottonwood & Bay Moss Galleries as well as included in collections worldwide. “Creating your Artist Statement is not only the first step to having your work known,” Shinan says, “it’s a fundamental document that expands and develops along with your calling as an artist.”

SAFE AND SANE HALLOWEEN IN REEDSPORT

If you can't find something to do in North Bend and Coos Bay why not travel up the road to Reedsport and join in the celebration. They have something for everyone, games for the kids, art for the not-so-kids and scares and shivers for everyone. The Bad Bead Girls of Florence will be there, displaying their latest creations. If you go early you might be able to pick up a Miss Skully necklace for the party at The Mill. Just a thought.

Pumpkin delivery begins on Thursday, there's a murderous mystery for Friday and on Saturday don't miss the terrors of the haunted maze.

I'll even forgive them for ripping off the name of MY murder mystery company, but then I don't suppose any of these guys have ever been to Texas. Oh well, I still have my logo. Go, do and enjoy the big doings in Reedsport, so you won't be haunted by regret on Monday.

Have You Seen the Dolly Dock

You may not be able to see the muffin man who lives in Drurey Lane, but you can see the only Dolly Dock on the Oregon coast. It lives in Port Orford and it lifts boats out of the water rather than the more conventional landing options.

And as long as you are going to Port Orford to watch/paint/photograph the Dolly Dock, why not make a day of it? Go early and paint, then take lunch at the Redfish and after strong, black coffee to ward off a nap view the Hawthorne Gallery. If you get too sleepy you can spend the night at the Castaways and wake up to sunrise on the ocean. Take a friend and have a great get-a-way.

Mark Jones, Director, Victoria and Albert Museum

Craft is remembering that art is seen, felt and heard as well as understood, knowing that not all ideas start with words, thinking with hands as well as head.

SPACE: The Final Frontier

There’s one thing every artist need and seldom has; space, space to store their work, space to hang their work, space to display their best. You could buy a small warehouse with a fourteen hundred foot home attached, but I hear those are hard to find or you could like some of the really, really good artists, I won’t name names, but you know who I am talking about, just get so good and famous and develop so many contacts that your work fills galleries and museums and is never at home.

Yes, I will admit that that can pose its own set of problems. Maybe you’ve even taken advantage of the many shows in the area and have work in all of the local venues. Those shows, wonderful though they are have one terrible fault, they end. Then you have all of the work you placed in the show and all of the work you didn’t place in the show and all of the work which you did while your work was out at the show and now you look like one of those people on Hoarders! Yikes this really is a problem.

There is a way, however especially for artists with larger pieces. Josie’s On Broadway will hang large works for up to three months and allows those works to be for sale. You know Josie’s? It’s the salon on Broadway next to the public parking lot and almost directly across from the Egyptian theater.

Here’s a thought, take in some art, get your hair done and have lunch at El Sombrero. That’s food for the spirit, soul and stomach all in one fell swoop. I suppose you could not swoop if it bothers you to fell in public.

Josie, the captain of her ship, the patron of the arts and the owner of the salon is nine and a half feet tall, and strikingly beautiful and it can be intimidating to come art in hand to seek a boon, but then you don’t have to risk being on a reality show where people will cluck about how much stuff you have in your house.

So, Josie’s on Broadway, 222 S. Broadway, Coos Bay, 97420, 541-269-0204, the place for all of your art display desires. Just think, how many people pass trough a museum or gallery and how many go to a salon?

And yes, I have heard all about the theory that the fumes from the chemicals used in the salon could damage your work and ruin a piece which you devoted a life-time to and besides showing in a salon isn’t very dignified.

How dignified is languishing in a dark closet or suffering mildew damage or water damage when the grandkids visit and backup the indoor plumbing. I’ll bet you’d like your art hanging on a nice, public wall then, right?

Witch's Brew

I don’t know when you grew up. I’ve done my best not to and will keep trying for as long as I don’t so take this for what it is worth, I grew up in the Golden Years of Monsters.

Universal had fallen on hard times so they released all of the vault films from the original Age of Monsters as Shock Theater. Every local station in the country had a low-paid, serf working the midnight show as a ghoul or vampire or zombie and kids everywhere were getting the beejeezus scared out of them. It was fun.

There is only one Dracula, Bela Lugosi. No don’t argue about it, this is an immutable fact. Chris Lee was okay, but don’t even begin with Twilight.

Boris Karloff, elegant, gentle, urbane, intelligent and that voice, you will live forever and while I am at it, Academy Award people, the 1931 Frankenstein was THE GREATEST MIME performance in the history of film and you should get off your ass and give Boris the honorary Academy Award he deserves!

From the sublime to the ridiculous, Hammer films, blood in rich, red Technicolor and the very best Van Hesling of all time, Peter Cushing and oh those Hammer honeys, Hazel Court of the red, red lips and the heaving bosoms. (No one in my opinion has heaved a bosom better before or since.) A generation of boys grew hale and hearty dreaming of being as stalwart as Peter Cushing and…well; you can guess what they were dreaming about Hazel Court.

And why am I boring you with tales of Hammer Horrors and Bela’s blood drinking?
It’s October and only a week away from Halloween and where in this community crawling with artists is the Halloween Phantasmagorical Art show.

Creating from myth is a time honored artistic conceit and the miseries of the damned have flowed across the canvas since men first trembled under some impassioned sermon of a tormented monk. The Picture of Dorian Gray has art as its plot device and what of the Phantom of the Opera, is there any art greater than the opera? (Yeah I know, but you have to admit they pay big bucks to hear ear-splitting sopranos screech in Italian.) Art and horror have walked hand in hand for many years.

But I don’t want to do a full scale portrait of Quasimodo. And you don’t have to; surely there are other images which haunt your nightmares, why not drag them kicking and screaming out into the light of day? Esmeralda might make a pretty picture or what about all of those doomed Ushers? Like animals, King Kong or Godzilla and why has poor ole neglected Gorgo not gotten as much press as Godzilla? He must feel like Christina Aguilera swamped in a sea of Kim Kardashian.

George Lucas took us to a galaxy far, far away where there are wonders untold, and thank you George you showed us all of them. So why not you? Where are your galaxies and new cosmos? Does Robbie the Robot live there? Maybe there’s an alluring Number Six?

If you’ve forgotten how it was to ride the Zeta Beam or fight Ming the Magnificent for the charms of Dale Arden, struggle through the jungle with Tarzan or Jungle Jim, listen to the Bromo Seltzer talking train that takes you to the squeaking door to the Inner Sanctum, have you never ventured into The Outer Limits or wandered through The Night Gallery, (Sneaky art reference), then its time you took a walk on the wild side, come over to the Dark Side and find what waits just beyond the waking world.
Why should I paint dead fish, onions and beer glasses? Girls are so much prettier. ~Marie Laurencin

Return of the Bearded Lady

I was mentioning my efforts to relearn my artistic skills by sketching women and the not always spectacular results. Now being wise and crafty readers you are no doubt asking yourself, “If it’s so difficult why are you doing it?”

And you would be well within your rights to ask for an explanation instead of a steady stream of whining.

Now remember sketching women is a time-honored artistic deal. Even the Cubists with their rejection of all understandable form knew how to draw women, they just refused. It’s one thing to work in a form which rejects form because you can’t draw and a very different thing to do it because you are seeking a greater truth.

But back to my problem, if it is so hard why not plants or birds or bees or motorcycles or, gasp, ships? (What a thought, living on the coast draw something that is everywhere and stands still!)

I do it because it is hard. Now, I could do small children, they have many of the same issues for the artist which women do, but, I just don’t like them. Oh they have their place and many people assure me that they can be wonderfully rewarding, but for me, I’ll take dogs.

The challenges for an artist attempting to use a two dimensional method to describe a very un two dimensional object requires great attention to anatomy, light and shadow and texture. Women with their delicate features rob the artist of the single most useful thing in nature, shadows.

Now men, they have large, gross in strictly scientific terms, craggy features which catch the light and need very little help to create rich, dark, frequent shadows. Think about the hallows and crags of Richard Boone’s face. (I won’t say a thing about his nose.) Okay so that dates me, let’s try Rod Stewart, or Gabriel Byrne or rubber man Jim Carrey, each and every one has a face made to trap shadows. And it is a poor artist who can’t at least get a face full of shadows down on paper so that the casual observer can spot the likeness.

But just try that with a woman. I like Jennifer Aniston, but where the hell did her nose go? Don’t even get me started on Jennifer Lopez or Julia Roberts. How ‘bout one large feature guys, even the ones who do have a nose lack some other light trapping nook not to mention cranny. Pug nose should be a four letter word.

All of this is why artists have always returned to the human face to find something to hone their skills on. It ain’t easy and no two are alike.

Food for the spirit, food for the body

In Port Orford there’s a new Gallery in town and its name is The Hawthorne. Now in fact the owners of The Hawthorne Gallery and Redfish restaurant have been in business long enough to know better, but they did it anyway.

Chris and Julie Hawthorne of Port Orford and Gregory and Susan Hawthorne of Big Sur have taken a location next to Battle Rock State Park and have opened the second Hawthorne Gallery. But in Port Orford they’ve added a restaurant just to make sure they get all of the traffic in the neighborhood.

Chris is a noted glass artist and Susan does sculptural pottery. (If you haven’t any idea of what that could be you need to go to Port Orford and see for yourself.)

And while you are there feasting on all of the works of art and enjoying the majestic scenery of Battle Rock why not plan to be there 11am to 10pm Wednesday through Friday or 9am to 10pm Saturday and Sunday? You do eat? Then make it a feast of too many virtues and feed the inner as well as the outer man.

Now don’t let all of the wonders intimidate you, just because Susan won the 2011 Niche magazine award for her piece, Silver With Stones, she’ll let you eat, so long as you pay and promise to gush and praise her accomplishments.

Port Orford is only a short drive away; why not plan on going on the weekend and having lunch as well as taking in the gallery. The view alone is worth the drive and with the pleasure of seeing all of the art and enjoying the new gallery you could impress the socks off your SO. Don’t have a SO? If you ask someone special to come with you that just might change.

3M to the Rescue

Have you ever worked on a drawing or a pastel painting for days and suddenly discover something you did hours ago is wrong, horribly wrong?

Oh yes, it’s there and there’s not a thing you can do about it.

But there is. Scotch tape or the generic equivalent will many times bring that work back from the dead.

If the problem is in the shading, coloring or drafting you can fix it. This is the part that makes working in a layered material so difficult. Sure you can fix an error because the material isn’t fixed and locked down, but in so doing you may do more harm than good. Erasers smear pencil and what they to pastel is best not mentioned in front of women and small children.

The trick is to find something which will pick up a layer of material without changing the underlying work. The drafting of your project is fine, but some where in shading you just went off the rails. (This happens to me all the time. I’m doing a sketch of a woman or child and in trying to get the shading right so that the face has depth and contour; I give the little darling a five o’clock shadow. Ever see Julia Roberts with a beard? It ain’t a pretty sight. [ Note* Trying to get a local model to let you sketch them is not easily done with a folio of girls who look like the bearded lady at the traveling carnival!])

This is where the tape trick comes in. Take a small strip of tape and press it into the picture where the error lies and when you lift it the top layers of graphite come away with the tape. Works the same with pastels.

The basic difference between the materials is the pencil drawing needs shading to give it a three dimensional look. The pastel drawing uses color in the same way, a subtle change in the light and you have a different color. And by changing the color you create a different shading. Think about flowers. They appear to have many colors in their petals and stems, but if you cut the flower and bring it in so that the light can be focused from one source the color is pretty uniform. It’s the light and shadow which make flowers look so colorful and that’s what the artist paints when they do a flower.

But with pastel building up the right color can be a process of small steps and all it takes is one too many passes and that beautiful leaf becomes a tarted up poster for bug spray. Take a piece of tape and you can lift off that color without smearing the work and viola you’re back in business.

So the next time the phone rings at the wrong moment or the kid sets fire to the kitchen or the dog brings you a nearly dead gift of nature, relax, that last pass with the pencil or the chalk can be gone in a flash.

Cape Arago Audubon meeting info from Kelle Herrick

Our town, Bandon, will be lucky to host a Cape Arago Audubon meeting on Nov 10, at the Bandon Library! Usually the meetings are held in Coos Bay (see below).
All those who love birds should hark, trill, and flock to see a slide show of beautiful birds from the the lens of Kelle Herrick, local award-winning photographer, and her sharp, scientific, side-kick, Harv Schubothe sporting his digiscope discoveries.

About Cape Arago Audubon:
Welcome to Cape Arago Audubon Society (CAAS) We are a chapter of the National Audubon Society, established in 1979 and centered in Coos Bay, Oregon. Our members live in Coos Bay, North Bend, Bandon, Reedsport, Lakeside, Myrtle Point, Coquille, and Florence. But we have dedicated members as far afield as Portland and The Dalles.

Meetings: We meet at 7:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of the month, September through May, usually at Milner Crest Education Center, 1255 Hemlock Avenue, Coos Bay. We begin our meetings with the latest news on chapter activities, followed by guest speakers, who give presentations on a variety of subjects.

On the Saturday following the meeting, Tim Rodenkirk or Russ Namitz leads a field trip to local birding areas.

The Wild Arts Festival

Kelle Herrick, the legendary Birdwoman of Bandon, far too generous to claim all of the credit for herself, sent me this note. It seems no matter how unlikely the Wild Arts Festival features artists other than Ms Herrick. Why I can't imagine, but for those seeking diversity in all things here is the whole unvarnished story.

The Wild Arts Festival celebrates nature in the work of regionally and nationally-known artists and writers. Now in its 30th year in Portland, the Festival has become the northwest’s premier show and sale of nature-related art and books. The participating artists and craftspeople represent a wide variety of media, and the authors present are a mix of novelists, photographers, poets and writers of non-fiction.

The Wild Arts Festival will feature over 50 artists and 35 authors in a festive atmosphere. Hours will be 10am-6pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm on Sunday November 20 & 21, 2010, at Montgomery Park Atrium, in Portland.

Corrected and Amended

I would like to think I am perfect in all ways and I work very hard to make everything I post on the South Coast Trawler completely correct. But this time I failed and was called on the carpet for my mistake. Kelle Herrick is from Bandon and I know the good folks of Bandon, far too polite to rub my nose in it, would never cry foul, fortunately and wisely Ms Herrick was not. I got what I deserved, a sound drubbing about the head and shoulders. Thanks Kellebird for making sure I tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

LIFERS

Do not forget the opening reception for Lifers at Old City Hall in Coquille tonight from 5-9pm.

This is another one of Victoria Tierney's many art efforts, surprise, and you have a chance to be in on the beginning. Why wait for others to see and spread the word. Artists are supposed to be on the cutting edge, but how can you be edgy if you aren't there?

Come one come all and head for Old City Hall in Coquille and you can be in with the In Crowd.

Art Ambition

"A man has more fun wishing for the things he hasn't got than enjoying the things he has got." Finley Peter Dunne

The Art of Adornment: Jewerly as Personal expression

So were you there for the reception? No, you cannot say that you went to the reception for the AWE and just couldn't make it. Ava and Victoria made it and they were in charge of the really big shew.

The work on display in Sage's boutique gallery was amazing and served as a clear reminder that art takes many forms.

Donna Wright had to take a closer look...

Everyone had an opinion...

Jardin was in the thick of it...

Ms Lyons was thrilled...

opinions were exchanged...

Even previous winners were there...

A BAAA past president, or two...

The Bad, Bead Girls of Florence were there...

Discussion broke out everywhere...

Sometimes it was just safer to hide out in the hall...

Ms Anne was there to cultivate artists and fans alike...

Even after all of the wonders the AWE had to offer you couldn't just leave without on last look.

Food For Thought

Have you looked at your CD? You know the one you got for participating in the AWE 2010? Can you imagine the amount of time, effort and expertise which went into making something so complex? And you got it just for participating!

Think of the folks who lined up to pay five dollars a head for this. They don’t feel conned, gypped, or swindled. They took one look at the show and knew they had to have more time to consider the art, the writing, the effort it took to get this show on the wall.

So if you have looked, (And if you haven’t shame on you, go do it now. Right now, put down the remote and go over to the computer and slide that disc in to the drive.), you know that the first thing which you see is the foreword by Ava Richey.

Now Ava knows and she does right by the people who helped her get this gigantic, colossal, stupendous show on the road, she says thank you. That’s right the simplest of courtesies a thank you.

And that is what each and every one of us, we who got all the nice words and admiring glances at the reception, that what we owe Ava.

Now don’t do it because I said to and don’t do it because I shamed you into it and don’t do it because it will make you look good when you meet your artist pals at the next reception, do it because you mean it.

Say thank you to Ava who came up with the idea and then went out and organized not one, but two count’em two AWE shows. Come on, admit it when the last AWE was finished you picked up your CD and promptly forgot all about it. That CD is somewhere on your desk collecting dust or being used as a coaster. And you never said a word of thanks.

So make up for it this time. Say thank you and mean it and tell everyone you know to do the same and maybe, just maybe Ava won’t pick up her blocks and go home. You do want another AWE show, don’t you? Good then you’d better start slathering on the honey because hard work doesn’t get done unless someone feels it was worth it.

And while you are in a mood to do the right thing, say thank you to Victoria Tierney, Susan Lehman, Janet Keenlyside and Arlene Tinsley. You could add Melanie Rose if you really, really want to as long as you are covering all of the bases.

Thanks a bunch guys, ya done good and that’s a fact.

Food For Thought

If you weren't at Southern Coos Hospital Sunday you were the only one. The crowds turned out for the opening reception of The Artist and Writer's Exchange 2010. There was art enough to satisfy the most discriminating tastes, from the mystic to the graphic. And the usual suspects studied each poem and picture with lazar-like focus.

The exhibiting artists strolled and shared their inspiration and huddled with each other trying to get inside the mysteries of another artist's vision.

The halls of the hospital were full...

Ava greeted everyone at the gate...

Is that what it means?

Victoria was on hand for more complex explanations...

CAM director Stephen Broocks gave it thoughtful consideration...

Voices were lifted in song...

But back at the walls consideration was still the watch word...

There was so much to see and consider maybe it would be best to just come back and take a second or even a third look.

Ava Richey's Art Info

Hello Everyone,

This coming Monday, October 11th we will be painting at Patricia Pike's place south of Bandon from 1-4 p.m. She has a large yard with a fantastic old tree with lots of character, eucalyptus trees, a pond, etc.

Turn west on Sydnam Lane, follow road until road forks, there is a sign that says Sydnam Lane with a small sign that says Pike just below it--take the right fork.

Go north until you come to a blue metal building (cranberry farm warehouse) make a left just before the metal building--there is a sign that say Pike that points where to turn. Shortly after that you will see a large sign for Pikes Pastures --their home is at the end of that lane.

If you want to carpool or caravan, meet me the vacant lot where the cheese factory used to be (next door to Forget Me Knots--across the street from The Station restaurant near Old Town) at 12:20.

My phone number is 347-4643 and cellphone is 541-297-6118.

Spooktacular

So what are your plans for the weirdness at the end of October? Have you thought about all of the wonderful opportunities for subjects, only available in the Halloween season?

No? Then you’ve missed the boat and will be very sorry when the other artists come out with great works and you’ve nothing of your own to show but the usual subjects.

Halloween brings out the kid in all of us. We dress up, tell ghost stories, make plans for parties and do all of the decorating we used to do for Christmas. That’s right; Halloween has become the second biggest holiday of the year. But for some reason the art world hasn’t caught on.

Now it may be that as artists we live in a world where haints and goblins, ghouls and things that go bump in the night hang around all year and we ignore them. They’re just not important enough for serious artists to tackle. Why, someone might think we were frivolous and we wouldn’t want that to happen.

Or is it because the spirits travel so fast that we’d have to use a camera, or ask a photographer pal to grab a shot or two for us? If it is it is time to get over it.

Jack-O Lanterns now come in all sizes and expressions, What was once a skill parents saved for the night before Halloween is an art form practiced by talented carvers. Making a really unique Jack-O Lantern can be a task worthy of a master sculptor. And the television and news media know it. They’ll have their folks out scouting the great carvers and filling the paper and the human interest segments with Jack’s of all trades.

And all of ghosties and ghoulies walking the streets, (okay, so for safety they’ll be going to private parties and not taking candy from strangers), will you get a chance to use them for one of your future projects?

Don’t forget about all of the young at heart who once a year bring out the fake blood and the fangs and do the Monster Mash, they’ll be making a bee-line to the parties and balls of Halloween. You want to miss them?

Halloween allows all of us to forget the RULES and believe in Vampires and werewolves and enjoy the thrill of scaring the jeebers out of ourselves. So no matter what you are planning for All Hollow’s Eve, get the camera or get a pal with a camera and save some of the sights for the dark days of winter. Remember even Marley shook his chains and rattled his keys at Christmas and you don’t want to be left out, do you?

Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Why mention breast cancer in a blog about art?

Because at least half of the artists in the South Coast area are women, (Probably more but for the sake of argument we’ll say half.), and making an impact for our fellow artists against a terrible disease which strikes women is important and as artists we have the tools to make the biggest splash.

This disease kills and disfigures women and most of the campaigns suffer from juvenile slogans, Save the Tatas or Save Second Base or worse, they have a campaign which has no slogan and the message gets lost in all of the other cries for help.

Yeah, yeah right, so talk about art.

Okay, I will and how we as artists can join the fight and maybe bring some skills that the silly sloganeers and the serious zealots just don’t have.

Art, visual art has the power to create am immediate and dramatic impact. The old saw about a picture being worth a thousand words is usually said by the guys holding the camera, but in this case it is absolutely correct. Can’t a creative person design an image which brings the devastation of cancer home to everyone? Can’t the creative person make an instantly recognizable symbol which is not silly and juvenile and yet instantly understandable?

Why haven’t the artists of the South Coast done a fund raiser for breast cancer, we donate art to the museum to raise money, we donate art to the schools to raise money, but when it comes to something as dangerous and traumatizing as cancer where are all the clever organizers?

And while I’m asking questions, why isn’t there a spearhead campaign directed specifically at artists, we have the skills and the power to make a huge impact and yet the NFL manages to wear pink cleats, the Run for the Cure folks have pink everywhere and there’s even a Pet’s for the Cure fashion show, but no artists.

I know you’re time is valuable and it has to be spent working on your craft, but surely there’s enough energy in the artistic community to get art working for a cure to this terrible menace.

Let’s create am Artists Abreast of Cancer campaign and make it happen so that by this time next year when breast awareness month rolls around we won’t still be sitting on the sidelines.

Were You There?

The Coos Art Museum hosted it reception for the 2010 Public Hanging of Oregon Art last night and all of the really important people were there. You weren't? And you know you're important, well don't despair, come see the show and bring money. Make up for missing out on the opening and the artist meet and greet by dropping large denomination bills in the donation box. You'll feel soooooooo much better and the Museum will be delighted and you're coming to see that show anyway, so don't freeload, bring cash.

Just look at the people who did come out...

Susan Lehman was there, studying the entries and discussing their merits...

Stephen was everywhere, making sure all of the guest artists had their day...

Archi directed traffic...

Del was there congratulating the celebrity artists...

Charles of Charleston had his word...

Some things required a closer look...

Thoughtful conversations broke out everywhere...

Some had definite opinions...

Some just wanted to share their views...

Some worked all night...

And some had plenty to say...

And at the end of the night even The Man in The Carpeted Office was happy. (Maybe... I think...Could be.)

Attention, Attention, Attention

Tonight from 5-7pm the CAM Biennial has its opening reception.

When you hold an open show the usual result is proof positive that the Bell Curve theory isn’t a theory, but an immutable law of the universe. (The Bell Curve theory, you studied in it Statistics or Algebra or Social Studies, remember? Oh right, you have slept since then. Okay so in short it states that in any group of numbers you will find the data is spread across a curve with the best and worst at the opposite, but farthest ends of the curve while the center holds the largest concentration spread relatively in a uniform path along the curve from best to worst or worst to best. Now wasn’t that easy? This concludes the math portion of the Blog.) So, the expectation is an unjuried show will have an awful lot of mediocre work.

This is not the case and in fact the show at the Coos Art Museum is wonderfully above average with only a nod here or there to that ole bell curve. But that is really what one would expect from a community where the artists live and work and submit their finished products for the approval of the most severe and critical eye…the public.

There is plenty to see and in vibrant, living colors using every technique and media known to man.

And there is art everywhere. Don’t be a casual viewer, look close, the art is in the three galleries, but it is also on the walls and in the halls and just about everywhere a flat surface can be found. The size of the show is amazing and the dedication of the staff and volunteers who got it up deserves all the kudos they can get. And the art isn’t just slapped on the walls and hung willy-nilly about; it is hung and lighted to its best advantage. Don’t try this at home boys and girls.

And why should you the public pay any attention to all of this artsy silliness? Because if you don’t know anything about art, but you know what you like you are in charge. This is a Public Hanging, you vote to reward the artist by acknowledging their skill with a show of their own. Yes, you, you get to decide who deserves the private showing. Now you could do it like things are done in high school where the kid who can cull, bully and get the parents to bride the most people wins, but you don’t want that. You are art savvy, thoughtful, critical and educated people. You can make a selection based on judgment, brains and maturity, but only if you go…

Don’t miss your chance to be there for the opening gun and come back often because there is a lot of art to see and decisions to make and you know what happens when you rush a decision… You become like a television network and cancel all of the good shows…

Ava Richey's Art News

Hello Everyone,

This coming Monday, October 4th, we will be joining the Port Orford First Mondays Art Group to do "Life Drawing with Lani". The hours are 12- 3 p.m. at Port Orford Public Library. The cost is $65 divided among the participants, (minimum $5).
