12th Night Nigh

“THEN THINK YOU RIGHT, I AM NOT WHAT I AM.”
COOS BAY SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK RETURNS WITH TWELFTH NIGHT
Now in their third year, Coos Bay Shakespeare in the Park presents William Shakespeare’s TWELFTH NIGHT in Mingus Park in Coos Bay. The production is free to the public and takes place for four performances in July.
Two twins shipwreck on a lost island. From his tower, a love-struck duke woos an icy countess lost to mourning. Below, the fools dance and deceive for a chance at destiny. Hearts beat like tempests, and the whirligig of time will have his revenges.
TWELFTH NIGHT is directed by John Beane and features Amanda McNulty, Scott Peters, Sabrina Gonzalez, Taylor Marchant, Curtis Buell, Kristin Hovenkotter-Greco, Joe Allen, Maxwell Freeman, Hassan Qadir, Jane Stebbins, Alex Dresser, Dylon Bessey, Rebecca Schwartz and David Jordan. It is assistant directed by Brenda Sund with dramaturgy by Nicole Freim and assistance from Daneal Doerr, stage management from Kathy Low, and costumes by Penny Peters.
TWELFTH NIGHT is presented with generous support from the Coquille Tribal Community Fund, Faith Lutheran Church, Farr’s True Value, and local businesses and donors.
Before each show at 3:15 we feature THE GREEN SHOW with the Side of the Tide Morris dancers, the Sapphire Sirens belly dancers, and seafaring shanty singers Finivarra and the Nor’Westers.
This year Coos Bay Shakespeare in the Park and the Coos Bay Public Library offers WORDS, WORDS, WORDS: Speaking Shakespeare’s Speech - a director’s symposium on the effect and communication of Shakespeare’s language, as well as a special look behind the scenes at TWELFTH NIGHT.
TWELFTH NIGHT performs Saturdays and Sundays, July 14, 15, 21, and 22, at 4pm in Mingus Park in Coos Bay. Blankets and picnics welcome. THE GREEN SHOW begins at 3:15PM. Cthulhu Coming

PREPARE YOURSELF ~ CTHULHU: THE MUSICAL! LANDS AT SO IT GOES COFFEEHOUSE
Music. Madness. And so, so many tentacles.
Detective John LaGrasse is searching for a murderer. Francine Thurston’s uncle vanished without a trace. The only clue to both mysteries is a bizarre statue worshipped by a nightmarish cult. And it’s leading both of them out to sea, and towards insanity. But you know, with singing puppets.
The show is what in a sensible universe would be impossible: a feature-length musical comedy adaptation of one of the least musical or comedic stories ever; H.P. Lovecraft’s cosmic horror classic, “The Call of Cthulhu,” performed entirely with puppets.
The Portland Mercury said, “You haven’t truly experienced Lovecraft’s madness until you’ve experienced it in its truest form: As a puppet musical.”
Equal parts rock band, and comedic powerhouse, Puppeteers for Fears have sold out theaters up and down the west coast with witty writing, electrifying acting, and anthemic original songs. And Cthulhu: the Musical has been written up as “some next-level puppet $#%&,” as far away as Italy.
The Oregon troupe will make a special appearance as part of its west coast summer tour, performing July 7th at 8PM and July 8th at 6PM at So It Goes Coffeehouse. 190 Central Ave. 541-808-9333. Seating is limited. Tickets can be purchased at soitgoescoffee.com or in person at the coffeehouse.
The show runs 90 minutes, with 12 original songs, a dozen original hand-and-rod puppets, and digitally projected multimedia sets. It is not for children. Unless they’re awesome.

Poer Play

POLITICAL THEATER FROM THE #METOO AND #TIMESUP MOVEMENTS SET WITH STAGED READING OF THEATRE UNCUT: THE POWER PLAYS COMING TO SO IT GOES COFFEEHOUSE
Theatre Uncut is back with THE POWER PLAYS: a new series of brand-new of short plays written by some of the UK's most dynamic female playwrights exploring the theme of power from the female perspective.
Responding to current gender politics, including the #timesup and #metoo movements, the confirmed writers are diverse and wide-ranging in their backgrounds and professional experience.
This marks the second year that So It Goes Coffeehouse has participated in the monthlong series of international performances of the pieces. The subject changes each year.
"As the world rocks with the fierce debate around gender equality, we wanted set our writers the challenge to explore the theme of power from the female perspective. We are delighted to be working with a collection of the UK's most dynamic playwrights, some who have written for Theatre Uncut before and some for the first time. We can't wait to see how people use the plays to take part in the global debate, joining with Theatre Uncut at this immensely exciting moment in history." - Hannah Price and Emma Callander, Co-Artistic Directors of Theatre Uncut

On Friday June 22nd at 7pm a staged reading of the plays will be performed at So It Goes Coffeehouse, 190 Central, Downtown Coos Bay. The event will be free and discussion encouraged.

Theatre Uncut aims to provoke debate and galvanise action by making new political theatre available for everyone, everywhere.

Outstanding Open Band

THE OUTSTANDING OPEN BAND
And dance calling by KAREN OLSEN from North Bend

Free Public Contra Dance at Sixes Grange on Saturday, JUNE 16

The Curry County Cultural Coalition is pleased to announce another free public Curry Contra Dance at the Sixes Grange Hall on Saturday evening, June 16 from 7 – 10 p.m.!

Did you miss the first Curry Contra Dance at the Sixes Grange in April?  Over 70 folks of all ages had an old fashioned good time, gathering as a community to enjoy dance, live music, and each other!
Don’t miss the next dance, coming up on June 16.  The South Coast Folk Society will bring back The Outstanding Open Band, with over a dozen very talented musicians all from the South Coast.  Karen Olsen, a skilled caller with many years of experience, will teach, and then call all the dances. Side of the Tide Morris Dances will also provide entertainment during the break.

Don’t fret if you can’t bring a partner to dance!  A partner will be found for you.  Even if you do come with a dancing partner, at a Contra Dance you can exchange partners regularly.  Singles, couples and families can all enjoy contra dancing.  And don’t worry if you don’t know how to do this sort of dancing:  at the last event, almost half of the attendees (including little grade school kids) had never contra danced before, were taught the moves, and had a great time!

Put on your dancing shoes, wear light comfortable clothing, and come and dance with us!

How blessed we are to have the Curry County Cultural Coalition and the Oregon Cultural Trust to bring Contra Dancing to our community!  Doors open at 6:45, and refreshments will be served.  For information on the Curry Contra Dances call Kristi at 541-332-9295 or Jo at 541-348-2174.

The South Coast Folk Society is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization, dedicated to the preservation, study, teaching, enjoyment, and continuing evolution of traditional and historical dance, music and song.  Thank You.
