Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my!

Ava and I would like to personally invite you to show paintings of plants, trees, birds or animals of the Coos County area in the up-coming hospital show here in Bandon.

We really want to feature paintings that were started plein air, but certainly they could have been finished in the studio with drawing, painting, or collage.

Perhaps you were part of the 30 Artists/30 Parks that SL Donaldson coordinated in 2011, those are the types of paintings that would be perfect for this—especially if they featured myrtle trees, Douglas firs, alder, wild flowers, etc. Perhaps you take your own bird or animal photos and create paintings from those? Consider joining this show that celebrates these natural treasures of the local area.

Please bring 1-3 paintings ready to hang to the Bandon hospital on Wednesday, April 8th at 2 p.m.

Attached is the official CTA with the entry form. We’ll be hanging work from the local artists along with school children’s paintings of the area.

The reception that everyone is invited to is on Sunday, April 12th from 1-3 p.m. See you there for music and refreshments!
Thanks so much,
Ava Richey and Susan Lehman   : )

Nose Itching

Hi friends of South Coast Folk Week,

Did you know that company’s coming? Our community is hosting a week-long celebration of dance, music and song on October 4-10 as a project of the Country Dance and Song Society's centennial celebration.
Firefly Family Band and dance leader Bob Dalsemer are coming from North Carolina to help us put on this fabulous series of activities. They have already begun working with the Folk Week steering committee, and soon we will be working with a corps of volunteers – that’s YOU! Folk Week will help raise the visibility of traditional dance, music and song in our community!

A schedule of activities is being developed; partnerships are being formed, and venues are getting booked! In addition to in-school activities for Marshfield and North Bend High School students, we've scheduled activities for students who participate in after school music activities – South Coast Lab Band and ORCO Arts Guild. Firefly and Bob will also be working with students on the SWOCC campus.

For the general public, we have many contra / square dances scheduled throughout the week; a concert featuring Firefly Family Band; 4 workshops for callers; 4 workshops for musicians; a sing along; a workshop for song leaders; a workshop for organizers and training for our board of directors.

Here is a sneak peek at some of the workshop descriptions:

Open band workshop  “Dance Band Basics: Playing for contra dancers”  Your role as dance musician, making simple tunes shine, avoiding common 'train wrecks,' and fostering a sense of fun.  All levels.

Dancers workshop “Mysteries of Contra Dance Revealed” Improve your dance memory; anticipate what’s next; how to assist or be assisted by other dancers.

Song leaders’ workshop “If You Can Talk, You Can Sing: Song Leading for Everyone” Song leading basics, encouraging participation, engaging the folk process, fun songs for all ages.

Callers Workshop: Resources, Contra Dance Music, Dance Notation Systems, Calling Techniques
Musicians’ workshop “Tricks of the Trade: How to Make Your Tunes Dance”  A workshop for contra dance musicians focusing on nifty dynamics, effective medleys, and creating energy in the dance hall.

I can’t wait to go to as many workshops and activities possible!

Many hands makes light work. We need your help! Respond to this email and offer help with one or more of these volunteer assignments:

1.   A home stay to one or more band members
2.   Host our guests (5) for a home-cooked lunch or a dinner one of the days while they are here
3.   Step up to help volunteer at one of the MANY activities listed above
4.   The steering committee made a conscious decision that ALL activities will be admission by donation, keeping activities accessible for families in our community. We’ll soon be soliciting business sponsors to help cover the costs of renting venues, sound technicians, printing posters and programs, etc. Can you help?

A shout out to Marty Giles of Wavecrest Discoveries, our first business sponsor! https://www.facebook.com/wavecrestdiscoveries
A shout out to the Coquille Tribal Community Fund who awarded a generous grant to support South Coast Folk Week!

Learn more about Folk Week https://southcoastfolksociety.wordpress.com/cdss-tour/

T minus 6 months! Wheeee!

P.S. See you at the contra dance tonight!

Flora and Fauna and plants and stuff

Hello to Artists who paint Plein Air:

Southern Coos Hospital is hosting a show for April, May, and June titled “Flora and Fauna of the Coquille Watershed”.

We are inviting plein air artists to submit 1 – 3 paintings related to plants and animals found in the Coquille Watershed.  There is a map of the area on a website included in the attached Call to Artists.

The watershed covers a large percentage of places where our plein air groups paint, so most of you will have paintings in your possession that will fit into this category.

Also in the show will be Bandon school students who are studying native plants and animals in the watershed area, so it will be a broad and varied representation.

We are looking forward to your participation.

The drop off date for the show is Wednesday, April 8th at 2:00 p.m. at the hospital.  There is no entry fee.  If you need to drop off at a different time or date, please contact us.

If you have questions about the Call to Artists or the show, or you have trouble opening the attachment, please contact me, Ava Richey   541-297-6118   yarnfarm@frontier.com  or richeyava@gmail.com  (cell)
Or    Susan Lehman  541-347-9888    studioblue@mycomspan.com

Thanks.

Pushing the Button

You know you're waiting in line at Dutch Bros eyes glued shut, throat dry, tongue the size of a hippo just hoping you make it to the window before the world comes to an end and then glorious caffeine!

Why not take this link and use that five for something which will last past the second gulp?  Yes, for just the cost of a heart-starter you can make Coos Community Radio the center for all things Coos and that's worth a few minutes of bleary eyes and foggy head now isn't it. You know it is so get out of line and on the Net and do the right thing. Then you can get back in line and feel completely self-righteous.
