Graphic Novel Workshop
Coos
Bay
Public Library will host a “Graphic Novel Workshop” with professional artist
Phil Yeh on Thursday, Feb. 28th at 1:30
p.m. Phil is one of the
pioneers of the graphic novel art form, having worked with such giants as Will
Eisner, Wendy Pini, and George Lucas. He founded Cartoonists Across America in
1985 after his friend Wally Famous Amos explained the problem of illiteracy in America
to him.
The
workshop will include an introduction to many world famous graphic novel
creators and their creation processes; hands-on experience in drawing a funny
comic strip; a demonstration on the process of actually writing a comic strip;
and how to create unique characters. Participants will also learn how to
self-publish their graphic novel using technology.
Phil
started his publishing company with $30 at the age of 16 and has written,
illustrated and published more than 87 books of his own and another 50 from
other authors. He founded the Cartoonists-Across-America-and-the-World
organization to send the message that cartoons can inspire people of all ages
to read. Few artists have Phil’s experience and this is a great
opportunity to learn from a true master. Phil has mentored thousands of
artists over the last 37 years and many have gone on to great success.
The
program is sponsored by the Friends of Coos Bay Public Library and the Coos Bay
Public Library Foundation. The public is welcome to bring their own
sketch pads. Refreshments will be served. For more information call

Visionary
Remember that first stick figure you drew way back when the
earth was still warm?
The body was all lines, with no substance and no shading and
the head was just a circle with more lines in it, but the eyes where big and
detailed and they had all of the correct equipment even if it was slight out of
proportion.
That was the first time you made a portrait.
And don’t think you were alone, artists have been doing it
since that first hairy cave person smeared chalk on the wall. (Okay it probably
was a guy type person, but in the spirit of equal representation, I’ll make it
person so no one gets left out.)
The one universal truth in art is no one poses longer, more
willingly and cheaper than the artist himself.
Why years ago when the world was ruled by the Church and it
was worth your hide if you went against its teachings it was hard to find
someone who would take all of their clothes off so that an artist could paint
them. Then there was the issue of no central heat until two thousand year later
and if you don’t think posing in the buff in an artist’s digs was an act of
bravery you haven’t tried streaking in many, many years.
Sure later in the development of art the crafty artists
discovered that there were commercial ladies who would gladly pose without clothes
because it was safer, less effort and nicer than the usual method they used to
pay the rent and besides artists were so obsessed with the painting part they
almost never asked for part of the labor in trade. Sure two thousand years later
guys like Paul Gauguin did a half and half but that could wait for a bit of
time to roll by.
Now there were others who would do the work, athletes, they competed
in the raw anyway and it was a lot warmer inside a sculptor’s studio than on
the playing fields of Olympia so
why not take a guys money and do the thing in a nice warm covered studio?
Have you noticed that not a lot has changed? The same
professionals do the work these days they just get better pay. If you work the
traditional trade but stay off the street you can claim to be a socialite and
if you keep any evidence that you have more brains than a sea slug you can make
a whole bunch of money, pose for the best artists of the day and maybe if you
are lucky get a reality show on a cable channel.
The same is true for the folks doing the ball tossing, they
really get better pay and they get big endorsement deals and they get celebrity
girlfriends who are working the same side of the street and they do talk shows
and cereal boxes and trading cards and they at least once a year do a big-time
nekkid pose-off for the Skin issue of Sports Irritating.
(Did you see Captain America’s
photographs in the Skin issue? Everyone knows Abby Wambach is the Terminator on
the soccer pitch and she has just been selected as the FIFA Player of the Year
for 2012 but in the Skin issue she makes being the baddest bomber on the pitch
look like a glamorous babe’s dream job and if Mike the Angelo was still doing
work he’d want to book her for one of his chisel jobs cause that girl has architecture
which would make the David envious.)
So there you have it the three groups the artist can call on
for a model who won’t answer a call in the middle of a session are athletes,
Human-interaction specialists and artists. And the one the artists can most
often afford is…now let’s not see the same hands every time…the artist.
But for an artist working with his favorite model, read
cheapest, the geography of seeing the subject becomes challenging. How do you
keep one eye on the canvas and one on that mirror and still have enough room to
work?
You shorten the subject and that is a blessing artists being
a lot more concerned with getting their vision down than they are with fashion
and hygiene, it’s for the best. A self-portrait can be managed peeking around
the easel and still doing a great job with the materials at hand.
And they’ve all done it. That is why we know so much about
the great artists of the past, they painted themselves. And they did themselves
no favors, Vinnie the Go and Rembrandt were honest to a fault, Picasso, well
when he did paint in his early periods before Cubism and Modernism took hold
made images we can understand and when he didn’t we sort of get a look into his
soul.
So we’ve all done it, made portraits and we keep on doing it
cause no one else will let us do it to them as often as we want to do it and if
we didn’t do it to ourselves we wouldn’t have anyone to do it to at all and
then we’d have to go and be brick layers and there is nothing at all wrong with
being a brick layer except is you are an artists laying bricks is just not as
exciting and challenging as you would want and so we all come back to doing
portraits, the self absorbed kind.
So the next time you stop in front of a mirror and you do do
it you know you do, instead of admiring the image of a noble Bohemian
visionary, think about what you’d like to do with that image and see if you can
resist the urge to rush home and drag out your paints.

Missing Heart
You just looked at the calendar and discovered what you’ve done, you are so dead, you’re goose is cooked, you probably should join the French Foreign Legion, you forgot Valentine’s Day.
There are worse crimes, forgetting her birthday, missing the
anniversary playing golf or calling her by the name of the office punch, but
those might leave you in the hospital. This one, this will be long and slow and
painful.
But there is a way out.
Of course, you didn’t think I was just going to let you
dangle in the wind, didja?
Get on the phone, make reservations at Little Italy and then
head over to Empire and take in the Dolphin Players Valentine’s offering, Love
Letters.
No there are no car chases and yes there is a lot of talking
and stuff about feelings and problems and the things that happen while you are
waiting to have the life you always thought you’d have.
And that is what will get you off the hook.
This show is a two man, well actor, only one of which is
actually a man and that is a good thing or it would be a political program
instead of a thoughtful, painful, insightful look at the way love or the missed
opportunities make life twist and turn.
The theater is the old Sunset Theater movie house brought
back to life by the efforts of the Dolphin Players and anyone they could
dragoon into helping convert the old flicker palace into a working boutique “in
the round” intimate in your face theater.
No I didn’t count the seats. I’d say about fifty is a full
house and that is what they deserved to have for this production. The stage is
bare save for a table, two chairs and a coupla book rests.
That way you have to pay attention to what is said and not
what is being done to make you think they are saying something profound. The
words are the music in any theater and these words are pretty tuneful.
Sitting feet away from the actors makes for some pretty
powerful connections with the audience and Sunday afternoon’s audience was
rewarded with a good and delightful reason to be connected.
No silly, I won’t tell you a thing about what is said go and
listen for yourself and if you get out of the doghouse and back in the big
house this might just do the trick.
The theater is located at 580 Newmark, that’s a block before
it becomes Cape Arago Highway and the number is (541) 808 2611 so call and find
out all of the details and make your plans for a night of delight or and
afternoon of culture and if you do it quickly you might just be forgiven for
ducking the whole Valentines deal.

The Inquisition
It is an amazing thing when a simple project turns into something akin to getting those elephants of Hannibal’s over the Alps.
I sat down this morning to do my taxes. Now it is early but those of you who follow this blog know that I have been having some health issues and I didn’t want to run the risk of not having the taxes done and winding up in the hospital and leaving the Long Sufferin’ holding the bag.
Now I did taxes for H & R Block for four years and I have a solid working knowledge of the dark mysteries of the federal tax system. I’ve used all of the major consumer tax preparation programs and after filed testing them for several years I can say Turbo Tax is the best. (Sorry Block, your in-store software better than anything else in the world but the consumer product is just feeble.)
And I’ve use Turbo Tax every since I moved to Oregon because living in a state tax free place like Texas state taxes were new and terrifying.
Turbo Tax makes getting the state return a delight and while I don’t enjoy paying the State of Oregon, if I can do it without gritting my teeth and whimpering that’s all good.
So I opened my copy of Turbo Tax and feed it to the machine and was sailing along on moonlight bay when the state portion of the program burped.
It simply would not load the state return portion of the program no matter what I tried to do.
After fighting with it for an hour, (Have I mentioned lately that I love computers but I HATE software?), I swallowed a time or two and called tech support.
Now if you’ve never had the pleasure of dealing with tech support I despise you, I loath you, I envy you, to my way of thinking you are the crabgrass on the lawn of life, for talking to tech support is the closest thing to being a guest of the Gestapo you can ever experience and live to tell the tale.
In most cases getting a root canal without anesthesia is more fun and a lot less painful than dealing with tech support. Most of what I know about computers is driven by the need to avoid talking to tech support.
So I called. Now if you haven’t you don’t know that when you call tech support you don’t get a real, live human person, you get a disembodied voice which tells you, “Your call is important to us and will be answered in the order in which it was received. Your wait time is approximately one millennia or the end of time whichever comes first.”
They are serious by the way, you if you are determined get to listen to the absolutely worst music, so bad it makes elevator look like Manhattan jazz clubs, played at life threatening volume and if you are lucky so badly recorded that the pops and cracks drown out the noise/music.
After your arm has gone to sleep holding the phone, (Interestingly enough now that most of us have done away with our landlines, the question becomes will I drop off in a coma or will the phone battery die before I get to talk to a human being?) a person, who may or may not A). Speak English and B). Have any idea of what they are supposed to be supporting. This is just the teaser person.
You won’t actually get anything useful from this one, be pleasant and polite and wait for them to become confused and put you back on hold.
The next day when another person answers you have a much better chance of getting someone who can actually help.
This is what happened to me. The first person I spoke with had no idea what I was talking about and couldn’t figure out what he was supposed to do, (yeah he was a guy and they are supposed to be the Nerd-o Supreme-o types) and he went away and left me back on hold.
Now it’s not like I could throw a hissy fit and hang up. I had the federal return completed and the Oregon return feeds off the federal so I couldn’t jut go buy another program so I stayed. It is a good thing that I did. I drew the gold bean.
Tasha didn’t know the answer. She tried many things to get me up and running. None of them worked. In the end the supervisor had to authorize a complete program, download. But that was the right fix and the State of Oregon owes Tasha a nice thank you cause they got their forms and now if the Croaker sends me off to white-gown prison the Long Sufferin' won’t be left to face the Inquisition.
The message here is clear, even if you know what you are doing and have the right product bad things can happen and you could wind up being behind in your filling and that boys and girls is a really, really bad thing. The nice folks down at the IRS don’t care what happened to your dog, the ranch, your daddy’s blue Olds, they don’t care if you get Plague or the heart-break of psoriasis or hangnails, they want their money and their forms and if you don’t give it to them they will make Attila look like a hon.
The worst thing you can do is not file. They will fall on you like a mountain and they love to do that to people like artists who they secretly think are scamming them anyway, so get your taxes together and filled long before April or you will get to meet the lovely kinder and gentler IRS headed by their new head collector Vlad the Impaler.
