Little Theatre on the Bay Presents Matilda the Musical

February 2023, North Bend, OR – Little Theatre on the Bay (LTOB) presents Roald Dahl’s “Matilda the Musical” in 9 performances from March 10^th through March 26^th at the Liberty Theatre in North Bend, Oregon. Performances are at 7:00 PM Fridays and Saturdays and 2:00 PM on Sundays. Tickets online at thelibertytheatre.org or at the box office on Tuesdays 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM and one hour prior to each show. Tickets for children 12 and under are half-price.

 

“Matilda” is played by Lyla Davidson, an 11-year-old from Coos Bay in her first lead role, while her evil teacher, Miss Trunchbowl is played by stage veteran John Adamson. With a cast of over 30, and larger-than-life characters, endearing songs, energetic dances, and a touch of magic, “Matilda” is a delightful show for the whole family!  Roald Dahl’s classic book comes to life in this vibrant telling of Matilda, a young girl whose imagination and love of learning are rejected by her unscrupulous parents. With encouragement from her teacher, Miss Honey, Matilda’s spunk takes her on a journey to create her own destiny.

Eaten Up with Style

 

South Park creator Trey Parker’s Cannibal! The Musical! is the kind of true story of the only person convicted of cannibalism in America - Alfred Packer. The sole survivor of an ill-fated trip to the Colorado Territory, he tells his side of the harrowing tale to news reporter Polly Pry as he awaits his execution. And his story goes like this: While searching for gold and love in the Colorado Territory, he and his companions lost their way and resorted to unthinkable horrors, including toe-tapping songs! 

FIlled with Parker’s trademark dark comic edge and buffoonery, Cannibal! is for mature audiences only. Auditions are February 25th at 6:30 PM at The Liberty Theatre at 2100 Sherman Avenue, North Bend, Oregon. Please prepare part of a song and be prepared to move.

Seeking ninjas, cyclops, maidens, dancers, trappers, erstwhile heroes, shopkeepers, judges, penguins, and someone to play Cartman (really). Most roles sing and/or dance, talent in these particular areas not necessarily required. Broad sense of humor definitely required.

Announcing two very special public events happening on the South Coast this month, 
The premier International Music Dance Band, Kef, will be live at two venues on the South Coast:
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 7PM IN FLORENCE AT THE FLORENCE SENIOR CENTER.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 7PM IN LANGLOIS AT THE LANGLOIS CHEESE FACTORY.
In addition, there will be a free Eastern European dance lesson at 5:30 on Saturday at the Cheese factory.
All are welcome at every event.

World Music Concert and Dance Coming to Florence and Langlois
 
The South Coast Folk Society is pleased to announce that the premier Pacific Northwest folk dance band, Kef, will be making a special appearance in Florence on Friday evening February 17th, and In Langlois on Saturday evening February 18.  One of the region’s most popular folkdance bands is coming to the south coast for a mini-tour.  On Friday, February 17^th there will be a concert and dance party at the Florence Senior Center from 7:00-10:00 pm.  On Saturday the 18^th the fun starts at 5:30 pm with a free folkdance lesson followed by a dance party from 7:00 to 10:00 pm at the Langlois Cheese Factory. Great music and festive social dancing are on tap for this special weekend. Both events are open to the public.
 
Kef is a popular ethnic folkdance band that has received praise at venues throughout the Pacific Northwest for the quality of their music and the authenticity of their sound. This is a Balkan/International dance festival.  The six musicians in the Kef Band have honed their talent over the past twelve years playing for audiences from Seattle to San Francisco.  The band features trumpets, flugelhorn, saxophone, cello, percussion, accordion, and vocals.  Their music is infused with energy and grace.  Its distinctive sound is delightful.  Kef plays a wonderful variety of dance music from Eastern Europe and around the world.  Featuring Balkan village folk melodies and lively dance grooves, all their music is a joy to hear and a pleasure to dance to.  
 
On Saturday afternoon at 5:30, skilled dance instructors will lead an afternoon workshop to enhance everyone’s enjoyment of the evening dance party.  The workshop is free.  Suggested donation for the dance parties is 10 per person. Students are always free.  Both events are alcohol and fragrance free.  Enjoy r­­efreshments during the break.  For more information call 541-404-8267.

ABTS Reception Saturday, February 4th Art by the Sea Gallery and Studio is hosting a Reception on Saturday, February 4th, from 2-4:00 pm for the opening of “Eye & the Lens,” a Community Photography Show with original works by participating artists. The show’s judge, Chris Malone, a renowned Coos Bay photographer, will be announcing the prizes and awards at the reception. Our Featured Artist for February is Jean Stephenson, who will be displaying several pieces of her beautiful artwork. Jean is accomplished in various mediums including oil, acrylic and pastel. Visitors can meet and greet Jean, several gallery members, the show’s judge and participants in the photography show. Visitors may also enjoy some homemade, baked goodies during the event. The show runs from January 31st to March 5th. Original paintings, art gourds, pottery, jewelry, photography, woodwork and many more beautiful works of art are always on display throughout the gallery. The mightiest/tiniest theatrical stage in the land presents James Goldmans medieval marvel.

Insecure siblings fighting for their parents’ attention; bickering spouses who can’t stand to be together or apart; adultery, experimentation; even the struggle to balance work and family: These are themes as much at home in our time as they were in the twelfth century. In James Goldman’s classic play THE LION IN WINTER, domestic turmoil rises to an art form. 

Keenly self-aware and motivated as much by spite as by any sense of duty, Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine maneuver against each other to position their favorite son in line for succession. THE LION IN WINTER is a quintessential drama of family strife and competing ambitions, a work that gives visceral, modern-day relevance to the intrigues of medievsl England. 

Combining keen historical and psychological insight with delicious, mordant wit, the stage play has become a touchstone of the theatre, and Goldman’s screenplay for the 1968 film adaptation won him an Academy Award. Told in “marvelously articulate language, with humor that bristles and burns” (Los Angeles Times), THE LION IN WINTER is the rare play that bursts into life from the page, and is now given a bold staging in the intimate coffeehouse setting at So It Goes Coffeehouse.
