Call to Artists April 2018

“Bountiful Harvest”

Art is food for the soul. Let’s make art about FOOD: planning, planting, growing, harvesting food, food preparation, food on a table, people cooking or eating food. Let’s celebrate it. Please bring non-perishable food donations along with your art on drop-off day and/or to the reception.

The Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center will host a show of artworks relating to the theme of all things food. This show runs April through June 2018.

As usual you can be creative in your interpretation of the theme, keeping in mind that art on the hospital walls is meant to entertain and de-stress the patients, families, staff, and general visitors. It is not a venue for nudity, violence, morbidity, or as a political soapbox. Thank you for your continued positive approach to art in these shows.

Artists may enter 1-3 pieces using painting, collage, mixed media, drawing, photography or assemblage in all artistic styles: representational, abstract, impressionistic, or futuristic. All works must be able to be hung on the wall.

Show Calendar:	Show runs April, May and June 2018
Reception:	Sunday, April 8, 2018 1:00 – 3:00 p.m.
Delivery of Art:	Wednesday, April 4, 2018 2 p.m. Bring ready-to-hang art plus paperwork to the cafeteria area at Southern Coos Hospital on Wednesday, at 2:00 p.m., or make alternative arrangements with show organizers.

Market Days

Saturday March 31st    6th Annual Coos Bay Public Library Foundation Adult Spelling Bee at Black Market Gourmet 7p.m.
Catch the spelling bee buzz at Black Market Gourmet, 495 Central Avenue, Coos Bay, on Saturday, March 31 starting at 7 p.m. Teams of undaunted locals will test their spelling abilities at Coos Bay Public Library Foundation’s Adult Spelling Bee fundraiser.  

Tickets are on sale now at the Coos Bay Public Library, the Art Connection, Black Market Gourmet, or from Library Foundation members. The $25 entry ticket includes a scrumptious dessert buffet, coffee, no-host bar, and plenty of merriment, according to organizers.   

Friends, families and those who just want to see how they measure up are encouraged to join the fun by cheering on their favorite team, joining the 50/50 raffle or purchasing raffle tickets for various bee-themed gift baskets. In between rounds, audience challenges for prizes and glory will add to the festivities. For more information call 541-269-1101.

Shakespeare On The Coast

Coos Bay Shakespeare In The Park proudly announces auditions for its 2018 production of TWELFTH NIGHT by William Shakespeare. 

TWELFTH NIGHT, or What You Will, performs July 14th-22nd in Mingus Park, the location of last years epic HENRY V. The production is presented with the valuable support of the Coquille Tribal Community Fund and the public at large. 

Director John Beane has put out a call for all actors, tumblers, singers, and performers of all ages, genders and creeds for TWELFTH NIGHT.

The shipwrecked twins, Viola and Sebastian, find themselves on the lost island of Illyria where a lovesick Duke rules over a fantasy land of swooning aristocrats, piggish drunks, swashbuckling vagabonds, bumbling fools and a very special Widow. TWELFTH NIGHT is a fantasy in the comic-romantic vein, with great pangs of music, destiny, adventure and desire.

Seeking: (will consider any gender or race):

VIOLA: The heroine who is shipwrecked and  falls in love with a duke while in disguise as a boy.

SEBASTIAN: Her plucky twin brother who has an adventure of his own.

ORSINO: Duke of the isle, in love with love and Olivia and possibly Viola and..

OLIVIA: Mourning widow in the grand tradition, beautiful and wealthy and having to deal with all measure of suitors though she has vowed to stay in mourning. 

SIR TOBY: Falstaffian uncle to Olivia, king drinker, would be wise man, parter of fools and their money.

AGUECHEEK: Young lord that is hopeful for Olivias hand through Toby,and is willing to fight, though not perhaps, and that'd be fine thank you. 

MARIA: The serving maid that knows what is what and helps cultivate a plan to ruin Malvolio, affected toward Toby.

MALVOLIO: The tragicomic steadfast butler that ends up with delusions of grandeur when tricked by his confederates into thinking Olvia loves him.

FESTE: A fool, a genie, the spirit of the island, sings, operatic, high energy.

ANTONIO: A brigand on the run, swashbuckler, possibly a beast, impossibly devoted to Antonio

AND: A fair phalanx of captains, bumblers, beasts, gardeners, secret masked police and other assorted marvels.

The all ages event features the amazing punk band PLAYBOY MANBABY from Phoenix, with special guest PIGASUS TRIO and FREE SEX (the band).

The event features three killer bands for three dollars and an array of unusual vendor tables inside the Egyptian including street and punk artists, awesome alternative clothing and food and everything from tarot readers to live paintings. Artist Nicholas McCullough's work will be onstage with local vendors in attendance as well, including Angry Gorilla Comics, Speez Tees, Stickle Acoustics and more. Folk Society to Host English Country Dancing March 31, Public Welcome

The South Coast Folk Society will host an evening of English Country Dancing in Coos Bay on Saturday, March 31, from 7:00 to 9:30PM.  This public event will feature live music by the Outstanding Open Band, and dance lessons and calling by Bob Fraley of Eugene.  Singles, couples and families can all enjoy English Country Dancing, and new dancers are always welcome.  It’s a lovely, graceful form of casual social dancing appropriate for all ages. Experience is not required.  All dances are taught.

The Outstanding Open Band consists of many skilled local musicians playing flute and fiddle, recorder and piano, concertina and penny whistle.  They are dedicated to playing great dance music.  Bob Fraley, the caller for the evening, is a highly experienced and very personable instructor and caller.  His English Country Dance repertoire is most enjoyable and ideal for all skill levels.

Contra Dance in Coos Bay March 3, Public Welcome

Enjoy dancing to great live music at the Coos Bay Senior Center on Saturday evening, March 3, from 7-10PM. All ages are welcome to this public event which features music by the Outstanding Open Band, and dance calling lead by Stacy Rose of Coos Bay.  Contra dancing is a light-hearted form of social dancing that is easy to learn and fun for all ages.  The Contra Dance will be held at the Senior Center activity room which is located at 4^th and Ingersoll in Coos Bay.  Singles, couples and families will all enjoy contra dancing, and new dancers are always welcome.

The Folk Society has arranged for The Outstanding Open Band, an all-volunteer group of talented local musicians, to play lively contra tunes and waltzes.  Their skill and energy create the perfect atmosphere to swing your partner and do-se-do your neighbor.  It’s fun.  Wear your dancing shoes, casual clothes, and a big smile.

Stacy Rose, a personable and very popular caller with many years of experience, will teach dancers every step and figure throughout the evening starting with a lesson at 7PM.  Stacy will also be offering a callers’ workshop at the Senior Center from 3-5PM in the afternoon on March 3^rd.  Her workshop is free and open to the public. Calling is an integral part of contra dancing, and everyone can benefit from learning more about how a dance is called.  Please come and be a volunteer dancer to help new callers.  Call Stacy for more information at 541-808-1002.  Drop-ins are welcome.

Salem, Ore. -- More than $5 million in funding will be on the table when Oregon Cultural Trust Manager Aili Schreiner joins with colleagues from the Cultural Trust's Statewide Partners and other funders Feb. 6 through March 8 for "Conversations with Funders and Partners," a 14-stop state tour. Attendees will learn about grant programs available from multiple grantmakers and will have the opportunity to discuss their projects and programming. Other statewide programming resources also will be presented. 

Representatives from the Statewide Partners -- the Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage, Oregon Humanities and the Oregon State Historic Preservation Office -- will be joined by counterparts from The Oregon Community Foundation and Portland's Regional Arts and Culture Council for some of the events. 

Organizations encouraged to attend "Conversations with Funders and Partners" include libraries, arts organizations, museums, cultural centers, historical societies, arts alliances, literary groups and heritage organizations. All cultural nonprofit organizations are welcome. 

"There are more than 1,450 cultural nonprofits serving Oregonians," said Schreiner. "We want to make sure they know about the grant funds and significant programming resources that are here to support them." 

Among the grant opportunities discussed will be the Cultural Trust's FY19 Cultural Development Grants; grant guidelines will be posted on the Trust website Monday, Feb. 12, with an April 13 application deadline (see details below). 

"Conversations with Funders and Partners" begin Tuesday, Feb. 6, in Northeast Portland and are scheduled in regional flights. Registration is not required.

Oregon Cultural Trust Cultural Development Grants 

The Cultural Trust's Cultural Development Grants recognize and support significant cultural programs and projects through four grant categories: access; preservation; creativity; and capacity. 

Since 2017 is projected to be a successful fundraising year for the Cultural Trust, a record amount will be available for grants which last year totaled more than $2.94 million. Cultural Development Grants represent one third of the annual funding the Cultural Trust provides to Oregon's cultural nonprofits. Other funding includes grants to the Trust's five statewide partners -- to support their projects and respective grant programs -- and to 45 county and tribal cultural coalitions that fund local initiatives and grants. 

FY2019 Cultural Development Grants are for projects and activities that will occur between Aug. 1, 2018, and July 30, 2019. 

Grant guidelines will be posted by Monday, Feb. 12, for an application deadline of 5 p.m. on Friday, April 13.
