Scholarship Fundraiser – Art Reception and Sale

Coastal Douglas Arts & Business Alliance (CDABA) is partnering with the Rotary Club of Reedsport to hold a Scholarship Fundraiser.  The Art Reception and Sale will feature a variety of donated pieces, created by various artists.  All proceeds to support local scholarships.

The reception will be hosted by the Lower Umpqua Hospital, located at 600 Ranch Road, Reedsport, OR  97467 on Friday, November 11, 2016 between 5-7 pm.  The event is free and family friendly.

Art pieces to be featured include an acrylic painting by Elyan D. Jamot.  Elyan completed a piece entitled “The Last Day of Summer at Loon Lake, Oregon 2016” just for this event.  The original piece is 48 x 24.  The show will also feature other pieces, such as a handmade quilt wall hanging, entitled “Horses,” donated by Theresa Chickering; Raku pottery Salmon mounted on a piece of driftwood by Bill Karcher; an Ocean Scene painting by Diana Amling, of Myrtle Point; a painting of a hummingbird entitled, “Feed Me” by Ron Hildenbrand, of Florence; an original painting of a Water Lily by Morgan, J; and many more. 

The art pieces that will be for sale at the event can be seen at the Facebook pages of the Rotary Club of Reedsport Oregon and Cdaba – Coastal Douglas Arts and Business Alliance.

All proceeds will benefit the Scholarship Fund of the Reedsport Rotary Foundation (a 503(c) nonprofit).  Donations of art are still being accepted.  Just in time for holiday shopping, gift giving, finding something for the special people on your gift list, and support a great cause.  Contact Rosa Solano at Butterfly Effects (541-530-9672) if you are interested in donating to this Scholarship Fundraiser

Icing on the Art

ICE DYING CLASS

Most people are familar with tie dying and hand dying fabric and clothing. This method of dying is done by using ice to disribute the dye and results in  very organic and unusual patterns. Very easy, lots of fun.

Two class options. Both include all the dying supplies and the class.  Scarf option $30 includes a cotton sateen scarf to dye. Bandana option $25 incudes a bandana to dye.

Addtional items to dye will be available at the class.

Continue to develop your watercolor skills with instruction from Liv Drahos at Coos Art Museum on Thursday, November 10, 17, December 1, 8, and 15, 2016 from 10:30 am to 1:30 p.m.  Watercolor Portraits is a five-day, adults-only watercolor class designed for participants who have some experience with watercolor.  Guided by Liv Drahos’ extensive experience in teaching both drawing and watercolor painting, participants will learn techniques and tips that will result in beautiful watercolor portraits. Unlock the secrets to painting facial features and skin tones to capture a realistic likeness with expression.

Ostriches

Excuse me, kindly take your head out of the sand and listen up. All of you ostriches, you've been hiding your heads in the dirt and letting opportunities pass merrily by and letting other people reap the benefits and do all sorts of creative things and get mucho rewards and gain fame and fortune and do shaving cream adds and wind up on the cover of People magazine and all the while you've been snorting dirt.

Did you not understand that Coos County Cultural Coalition grants are available to individuals.

Yes, you can actually get a grant to cover some of the expenses of doing your work and have extra time to be brilliant and a huge success and achieve lifestyles of the Rich and Shameless. You could be like a Kardashian, even!

You are already here and there's a link to the Coos County Cultural Coalition web site where you can find and download the forms to apply for a grant. So why aren't you doing it?

Yes, sure the deadline is October the 31^th and you are busy getting the house decorated for Halloween, and buying candy to stave off the hoards of starving chitlins who will be banging on your door on the All Hallows Eve and you can't be bothered to take time away from the busy preparation for this important holiday, what about getting an early start for next year?

You don't think you need any help or support, your project is so small that you plan to finance it with bottle returns and cookie sales, but someone said the Girl Scouts have already done that so cookies are out but there are always bottles by the side of the road so you are on the road to financial success without filling in a bunch of forms and justifying yourself to a committee of stuffed shirts.

Listen, even if you can finance your project with bottle returns, what about promotions, space and display? Didja think about that? No of course not.

The grant won't pay for capital improvements, or salaries, but you are going to con...convince your long-suffering friends, families and under-age school children to do the grunt work so you don't have to worry about that!

So what about it, do you want to be an ostrich all of your life or do you want to soar with the eagles and fly high with the wise owls? All you have to do is fill out the form, read all of the directions, not like you do with the tax forms where you open the page, take one look, and run screaming to your tax accountant! (You do know that tax accountants, tax lawyers and CPAs, cannot practice before the IRS tax court? Only an Enrolled Agent can and you better know that when the audit letter comes.)

You know you have something you want to do, you know you just need a little bit of help to do it, you know that it will be a homogeneous triumph. So get out your pen, download the forms, fill them in, send them back and this time next year you can be the one with a smug little smile on your face having people fall at your feet to praise your success and it all started with a grant from the CCCC!

Thurs.  Oct. 13 – Watercolor on Yupo Paper with Pat Cink  1-3:00  $30  (Bring your own watercolor supplies.  Yupo sheets will be available for $1.50 a sheet.)

Tues.  Oct. 18 – Basic Acrylics; Experimenting with Color with Jean Stephenson  11:30-3:00  $30  (Bring brushes & acrylics if you have them.)

Wed.   Oct. 19 – Collage Group with Susan Lehman  1-3:00  $5  (Bring a collage you are working on and the materials to work.  This is a peer group;  not a class.)

Sat.  Oct. 22 – “Assemblage:  Family History as Art”   with Janice Horne  11-1:00  $30  (Participants need to bring old photos (or copies) trinkets, paper mementos, other embellishments.  An 8x8 board (substrata) will be supplied by Janice or you can bring our own.  Other embellishments, papers, paint, & brushes will be provided.  Examples of assemblage work can be seen on my website at Janice-Horne.com.)

Deep Blue Sea

It is due to a happy accident that Robin Longerbeam and James Smith are showing together at the Bandon Library Art Gallery for the next two months, allowing me to put together both photographs taken below the literal tide, and paintings of imagined seas and the shadowy life that dwells therein. Together, they give a rich experience of the undersea world.

Jim Smith dives all over the world, and the photographs on display here are just a sample of what he brings back. Taken in the Sudan, Mexico, the Phillipines, and Honduras, his beautifully framed shots emphasize the unique characteristics of the eccentric creatures below, as well as the details of their various environments. It was the undersea world itself which inspired Jim to purchase a camera in order to document what he saw, and then to share it with the rest of us. It's a rare treat to be able to see such work here in Bandon.

The paintings of Robin Longerbeam are studies in detail and texture. Using a variety of acrylic media, she builds texture and depth using both transparent and translucent layers—almost creating a collage effect—until she makes a nearly 3-dimensional underwater space filled with ferny plant life and swimming creatures. Using deep blues combined with contrasting hot colors, then finishing each canvas with a series of glazes, Robin draws you into this mysterious world and holds you there as you explore the many surprises in each image. You will want to take your time.
