UVAA Invites Artists to Submit to a Themed Show About: Water : A transparent fluid which forms the world's streams, lakes, oceans, and rain. It's a major constituent of all living things. The human body is 90% water. It drips from our taps, it can be purchased in bottles (with or without bubbles), it fills swimming pools. It is plentiful in some places, scarce in other.  Open to all media: Drawing, Painting, Photography, Sculpture, and Video. Submission deadline is February 10, 2015; entries can be submitted online or by mail.  Juror Drew Lantrip: Drew Lantrip's work is inspired by his studies of 19th century painters. His interest is in painting as a visual language and its ability to evoke and express feelings and ideas universally. He studied classical drawing and oil painting at the Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy. After graduating in 2010, he has spent time painting in Italy, the Netherlands, Portland, Oregon, and Tokyo, while he currently lives in Connecticut. He paints figurative works, landscapes, still lifes, and portraits in oil and teaches figure painting at the Wethersfield Academy for the Arts. For more information on the Juror: drewlantrip.com. Eligibility for WATER:  Eligible to all artists to submit up to (3) entries in that deal with the idea of water, all genres and media accepted (please see prospectus). All work must be ready to hang/install upon arrival. UVAA commission rates are 30% for UVAA members and 40% for non-members. Entries must be original works of art and entirely created by the entrant. No work will be accepted into this show which is in violation of any copyright or is not an original work made by the submitting artist.  Submission Fee: $20 for members of UVAA and $25 for non-members, to upload up to three images for submission.  Artwork must have been completed within the last two years. Work must not have been previously exhibited at UVAA.  ARTIST SCHEDULE:  Submission Deadline: Friday - February 10, 2015  Art Delivery to UVAA: Tue - Mon, March 10 - March 16, 2015  Opening Reception: Friday, March 20 from 5pm to 7pm  Exhibit Ends: Saturday, May 2, 2015  Artwork Pick Up: Tuesday, May 5, 2015  Artwork shipped: Wednesday, May 5, 2015  The exhibit opens with a public reception on the evening of Friday, March 20, from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at UVAA. Special note!

Photographer and videographer Doug Plummer is making a documentary about South Coast Folk Week, and he's visiting our contra dance and sing-along this weekend to shoot footage of these two monthly events. We'll introduce Doug, so if you don't want to be filmed, let him know and he'll keep you out of the footage. This documentary will be distributed to a wide audience, so if you have the slightest interest in contra dancing or singing, please come to the contra dance and sing-along this weekend and help the world learn how fabulous those things are!

Contra Dance this Saturday, Dec. 13

At Greenacres Grange at 7 p.m. Caller: Woody Lane of Roseburg. Band: The Eugene Barnstormers. Admission: General $7, students w/ID and seniors over 60 $6, members $5, and supervised children under 6 free.  First-timers who arrive in time for the 7 p.m. lesson will receive a ticket for free admission to their second dance. The dances are alcohol- and fragrance-free. 

Second Sunday Sing-Along

Sunday, Dec. 14, 4-6 p.m., at the North Bend Library. We've got the Rise Up Singing songbooks, but I have a feeling there'll be some Christmas caroling too.

Celtic Session

First and third Wednesdays (Dec. 17, Jan. 7) 7-9 p.m. at Liberty Pub, 2047 Sherman Ave, North Bend. Play or listen!

International Folk Dance Friday, Dec. 26

Starts at 7 p.m., Greenacres Grange. Teaching, followed by requests. Admission is $4, or $3 for members of SCFS. Got out-of-town guests for Christmas? Wouldn't this be a great place to bring them?

Stacy Rose's international folk dance lessons resume 7-9 p.m., in the multipurpose room at Harding Learning Center, 755 S. 7^th St. Coos Bay. Learn fun dances to interesting music from all around the world. Make a New Year's resolution to try something new or to reconnect with folk dance if you used to do it. Folk Week update from coordinator Stacy Rose

As you know, South Coast Folk Society is one of six stops across the US and Canada for the Country Dance & Song Society centennial tour. (map attached)

From October 4 – 10, we’ll host a week of activities for singers, dancers, musicians…. We’ll go into the schools, work with after-school youth organizations and have outreach activities in libraries… we’ll hold workshops and dances. Our goals include skill-building, community development, and outreach.

Helping us the facilitate this week of event will be a group of musicians and dance leader that CDSS is bringing here from North Carolina – Firefly Family Band and Bob Dalsemer.

 How can you help?

1. We’re looking for groups in the community who would be interested in hearing more about this project – are you a member of a club, church or organization that would like a guest speaker? Reply to this email and let us know. We’ll call you back soon!

 2. We will be looking for financial support from local businesses – business sponsors will have a business card-sized ad in our program, be included in our poster and all publicity announcements. This series of workshops is designed for imaginative 6 to 12 year olds! Each workshop explores an element of drawing through creative play.

 

Workshop 1: Goin' Fishing. Students will use fishing poles (rulers and string) and paint to explore how movement and control effect line.

Workshop 2: Skydiving! This week students will explore how viewpoint and perspective relate to drawing while participating in skydiving drills, don't forget your parachutes (backpacks)!

Workshop 3: Forts. Yes! I said FORTS! Keep the perspective juices flowing with fort building!

Workshop 4: Draw Me Dress Up. Are you a pirate? A princess? A potato? Figure drawing is fabulous! Bring your dress up clothes and let’s model!

Workshop 5: May I Take Your Order. Students will hear their stomachs growl when they see the composition on their plates. Come learn about composition in drawing at the world famous CAM restaurant (art room)!

Workshop 6: Kids Choice. Students have the chance to propose their favorite play activities!

 

Geraldine Sundstrom is a 2012 graduate of St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin and has a B.A. in Fine Arts.  As an art instructor she draws upon ten years of experience in child and adolescent recreational activity programming as well as an extensive and multi-faceted professional background in the visual arts.

We are hosting a special Holiday Contra Dance on Saturday evening, December 13, from 7-10PM.  This is a public event open to dancers of all ages.  Woody Lane from Roseburg will be calling the dances, and The Eugene Barnstormers will be on stage all evening playing their wonderful energizing music.

Contra Dance in Greenacres December 13
The South Coast Folk Society will host a special holiday Contra Dance at the Greenacres Grange Hall on Saturday evening, December 13.  This public event features three hours of great live music and a guest caller from Roseburg.  The fun begins at 7PM.  Singles, couples and families are welcome.  Dancers of all ages and abilities can learn to contra dance, a light-hearted social dance craze.  Woody Lane, our guest caller for the evening, will teach all the steps and figures at the start.  Then Woody will call a variety of exciting, lively, invigorating dances.  The dances are so easy to learn that all levels of experience will enjoy dancing together.
Music for our November 8th dance will be provided by The Eugene Barnstormers, a perennial favorite.  These talented gentlemen fill the dance hall with wonderful energy.  They play an exciting blend of very danceable music.  Prepare to tap you feet to their beat as you swing your partner.
The evening’s program includes contras, circle mixers, and a waltz or two.  First timers who arrive for the 7PM lesson will receive a ticket for free admission to their next dance.  This event is alcohol and fragrance free.  Put on your dancing shoes and join us.  Refreshments are available during the dance.  Doors open at 6:45PM.  Admission:  General $7, Students w/ID and Seniors over 60 $6, Members $5, and Supervised Children under 6 are free.
