Dance Like No One is Watching
South Coast Folk Society
To South Coast Folk SocietyMe
Jul 24 at 11:18 PM
Dear South Coast Folk Society members and friends:
The week of October 4-11, 2015, a “dream team” of
expert musicians and dance teachers will visit our area. They’ll help the South
Coast Folk Society create a week of events that will share the joy of contra
dance, group singing, and traditional music with as many people as possible.
It’s all happening because the
Country Dance and Song Society (CDSS) is celebrating its centennial. South Coast Folk Society is an
affiliate group of CDSS, a non-profit umbrella organization offering its member
organizations education, resources, services and funding. To help celebrate its
100th birthday in 2015, CDSS has chosen seven communities across the United
States and Canada as stops on a centennial tour. The tour will bring musicians
and dance leaders to these communities.
CDSS chose our community for two
reasons: We already have a vibrant contra dance and traditional music
community, and we have the potential to introduce our activities to a much
larger audience.
In
collaboration with CDSS, the South Coast Folk Society will provide
activities in Coos Bay and surrounding areas that welcome all
comers, developing the skills of local dancers, dance leaders, song
leaders,
and musicians, and raising public awareness of Folk Society activities.
As members and friends of South Coast Folk Society, you
can do several things over the next year to help make the tour a success.
1) If you haven’t done so already,
join South Coast Folk Society! You’ll find a membership application and information about the
organization at www.southcoastfolksociety.wordpress.com on the "About" page.
2) Keep telling people about the monthly Folk Society activities you enjoy and inviting them to come.
3) Join the South Coast Folk Society speakers’ bureau.
We need a few talkative people to visit local service clubs, churches, and
other organizations to give a brief presentation about the Folk Society and the CDSS Tour.
The goal is to encourage people to participate in our activities and also to
increase community awareness of what we do. If you’re interested, contact Stacy
Rose at rosecontra@gmail.com.
4) Say “yes” when the Tour
Committee calls for volunteers to help with events during the Tour week and
before.
You can see the other communities on the tour and learn more about CDSS at http://www.cdss.org/centennial-tour.html
Questions? Ask a Tour Committee
member when you see them at Folk Society events, or email the committee chair, Stacy
Rose, at rosecontra@gmail.com. Current members of the Tour Committee are Stacy
Rose (chair), Karen Olsen (finance), Jennifer Sordyl (outreach), Lynn Danner
(tour visitor hospitality), and Gail Elber (publicity).

I began my creative journey in the literary world and have published poetry in numerous literary magazines and have won several awards in that world. I have also written a novel. However, that seductive Siren, called Art, whispered in my ear that I should paint, and that is what I have been doing for the past twenty-some years. My husband, Jim, who is also an artist and poet, built my studio, the Red Pagoda, and that is where I have painted hundreds of paintings. My work is diverse, I am primarily a colorist, I draw no lines and have no rules about mediums, sometimes combining them in the most unexpected way. This show will include work that is Abstract, Expressionist, Impressionism, mixed media Collage, and two Assemblages. My work is in private collections here in this country as well as abroad. I have been doing shows for many years and have had my work in galleries up and down the coast as well as out of state. I have been fortunate to have garnered a fair share of awards and ribbons for Best Of Show, as well as Firsts. My work has been juried into national shows as well as my work has been in Expressions West and the Maritime show. I donate 10% of all my sales to Pacific Cove Humane Society. The watchword is KISS: Everyone is responsible for their own campsite,

double up on some of the spaces. First come, first served on the best
spots, so pencil in that weekend and plan on being there early!
Smith River RV Park and Marina will give us a group rate of $20/ night RV's/boats & $10/night tents.
Smith River RV Park & Marina has been around for decades. Located
right on the Smith River just 10 miles north of Reedsport, offering RV
spaces, a marina for boating & lots of beauty. For direct questions
about camping, contact Jessica (541) 707-0841 at the RV Park.

around in our kayaks during the day... play tunes by the campfire at
night.
Want to get a jump on learning the tunes? The set list is attached. If
you are interested in playing with Open Band, even if you can't make the

Landmark Church is
truly a landmark in the North Bend community. The basement was built
in 1908 and the sanctuary was completed in 1910. It is the oldest
church building in North Bend that was originally built as a church that
is still used as a church today.
