Second Annual Celebration of Photographic Art
Second Street Gallery, at 210 Second Street in Old Town
Bandon, announces their second annual celebration of
photographic art. The celebration includes a competition for
amateur photographers, workshops and an exhibition of all
photography entered in the competition.
All amateur photographers who reside in the State of Oregon
are invited to submit up to 3 photographs no larger than 11
x 14 inches in size. The categories for adult submissions
included landscape & seascape, people & wildlife and
experimental, where photo editing software was utilized.
There is also a youth division for young people under the
age of 18 years. Prizes will be awarded for entries in all
categories that demonstrated excellence in areas of
creativity, image quality and artistic composition. Entries
can be created using film or digital formats and can be in
color as well as black and white formats.
A panel of 3 judges, including local photographer Wood
Sabold, graphic designer Bill Kelsay and gallery owner &
photographer Richard Rahmlow, will review all the entries to
determine the winners. Ribbons will be awarded for each
category and gift certificates will be presented to the
winners. The deadline for submission of work is October 27,
2011.
In addition to the competition and show, workshops will be
held in all phases of photography. Many topics will be
discussed including camera handling, lighting, composition
and Photoshop. A field trip and critique session will also
be included. All workshops will be held the weekend of
October 29th & 30th.

Western Oregon Regional
Opening night for the Western Oregon Regional was filled with art and artists as the Coos Art Museum presented this eclectic exhibit.
Some artists did sculpture. I'm sure this was what Charles Shultz had in mind when he created the Great Pumpkin. Okay, so it's a gourd, but that's a squash.
The youth movement was out in force.
The Man in The Carpeted Office had a quiet word with the Grande Exalted Imperial Stomper, or as we know it, the juror.
There were famous artists and famous volunteers...
They even came in flocks, if you stalked them carefully...
The Board, those guys who keep the doors open and the direction on the right path, they came out too...

Why An Artist Can't Afford to be Without A Scanner
They're cheap.
Some great reason. It is. When something is simple and cheap and useful, there just is no reason not to have one. So why don'tcha?
Okay, the truth is I don't know how to use one, the new ones are too complicated and expensive and they're just not something I find useful.
That's the lamest excuse since the dog ate my homework.
Useful? There are so many things you can do with a scanner it is hard to believe you can't find one that will fit with what you are doing. You're working on a collage and you have a great piece of stuff which you want to use, but it was found and can't be duplicated. You don't want to cut it up and ruin the whole thing just to get a note card sized bit. Run it through the scanner. Now it won't have the texture of the original, but you're going to add other materials and cover the whole thing with clear varnish, so the texture isn't going to matter. A scanned piece with all of the colors of the original and just the right size leaves the master piece untouched. Maybe you like the pattern but don't care for the colors? Once you've scanned the piece in you can fire up rusty-trusty GIMP or PhotoDelux or even the Big Mother PhotoShop and change what you don't like. Maybe you want a montage of several things, natural and man-made. You can run them through a flatbed and have an image of each to play with till the cows come home. You can play with the images until you find the right pattern and then go use your precious one-of-a-kind goodies.
You may be right the new ones are expensive. Some genius decided that what the average American really needed was a printer which does everything from peeling apples to mixing a good dry martini and they built it all into one box the size of a 1951 Buick. I don't much like things which do a lot of stuff badly, I'd rather have one that does what it does really well.
Okay, so we're not talking about the latest HP, Epson or Cannon multipurpose print/tank/submarine, let's talk about what they replaced.
I got my first scanner way back in 1996, it was a tractor-fed beauty which would do a whole page at a time and it had lots of wonderful software, like my dearly beloved Adobe PhotoDelux 1.0. It also had and picture album maker and something which was called OCR That's optical Character Recognition and it worked about a third of the time. Even for me, and I type with two fingers, it was faster to type in the page that it was to let OCR miss-recognize it. But I've strayed, track-fed was the first type of scanner and they're making something of a comeback, I see them advertised as something to organize your bills. Me, I try to pay the bills and get rid of them but I suppose there are folks who like neat stacks of debt to show off when the IRS comes auditing.
Then came flatbed scanners, the kind that looks like it escaped from a Xerox machine...sorry Xerox, I meant an office-base photo-copier. That's why they call'em flatbeds. They are flat. And they are the most useful of the lot and boy did we snap them up. Back in the day they were a lot more popular than the Ipad. You could slap this month's centerfold down on the bed and presto-chango you had a playmate all of your own, with just a tiny visible crease. Yeah and Polaroids were only used for wedding pictures.
Once the centerfold stage passed, the useful part came out. A flatbed could copy from a book without ripping the page out. Libraries find that very welcome. Flatbeds can copy newspaper articles and send them by email to your cousin in Bugtussel. Flatbeds were all the rage for almost ten years which in computer time is like an Ice Age.
Then came the All-In-One. And the flatbed went like the dinosaur, leaving their discarded carcases littering the digital plain.
No, I'm not going to talk about All-In-Ones, if you have one the instructions for a the flatbed portion of the harangue will do and if you don't then you can avoid buying one and still get great pictures.
Thanks to the All-In there are plenty of fossil flatbeds lying around and they, like most computer parts aren't worth anything, but they still work. Here's where you come in, you can get one for less than twenty bucks. No I didn't miss-type. Twenty bucks, that's four lattes.
There's a beautiful Epson Perfection 1250 at Goodwill on Broadway right now. It scans at 1200 x 2400 which will let you copy Abe's face from a penny to the size of a billboard. Less than twenty bucks folks.
But I don't know how to get it running without the factory software. A lot of the time, the original software is packed along with the scanner when it is donated to the charity. If not you can go to the vendor's site and download it for free. Or...if you've done what I asked you can just use Faststone Image Viewer to run the pumpkin and not bother with all that downloading do-wah.
Yeppers, Faststone Image Viewer which I asked you to download last March has a nifty scanner interface which will run most of the flatbeds as well or better than the original software. I have an Epson Perfection 1650 which never did like the factory software. Faststone bypasses the clunky Epson drivers and runs it off of the Faststone engine and I get wonderful images. I even tried to copy a slide without the slide-scanning equipment and got a useable image, but that's a lesson for another day.
Getting a flatbed running really is simple even without the original software.
How to use one? Put the image to be copied on the flatbed and close the lid and click scan on your scanner interface and you're in business. You aren't really going to claim that you don't know how to use a Xerox? That's a photocopier, sorry Xerox.
So scanners can be used for all sorts of things, they aren't expensive and they are easy to use. And best of all when you have an original less than fifteen inches by nine inches you can convert it to a digital file and use it for all sorts of things. Like all of those wonderful images from the 30 Parks by 30 artists show. A digital file and a bit of effort and there's a Christmas/Thanksgiving/Guy Fawkes day card. How many people do you know sending out Guy Fawkes Day cards?

along the coast, August and September have blown past us all
at Sage and it's hard to believe that our first twelve
months on 11th St. are now fully behind us!
The year was a blur of fast and furious activities and
included everything from exceptionally delightful
interactions with hundreds of wonderful visitors, to
triumphing over the technology bumps and space settling
challenges that always accompany setting up shop in a new
location.
In my last newsletter, I PROMISED some First Anniversary
excitement at Sage and I have not forgotten. Life took a
little different path for my family than planned this
summer, delaying my previous goals; however, now is the time
for catching up... KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN... We have many

BEFORE I JUMP INTO THE NEWS AND ACTIVITIES...
I have some heartfelt thoughts I hope you won't mind my
sharing...
THANKSGIVING CAME EARLY TO SAGE...AND TO ME...
Although we have had some amazing and commendable events in
Bandon this summer, it is not tourism and entertainment upon
which I wish to reflect and offer thanks, rather the
community support that makes it possible for us all to
create, produce, and enjoy those engaging activities on a daily
basis. My early Thanksgiving appreciation is
extended to the network of people who helped care for my
husband, Eugene, before and during his recent surgery, and
throughout his recovery over the summer.
On a personal level, the friendship and support of our many
friends, and even new acquaintances, poured in, reminding us
of what is so unique about living in a small town. Our
wonderful neighbors and a score of other friends jumped in
with offers of everything from, house sitting and lawn
mowing, to homemade dinners and dog walking!
On a larger scale, my appreciation is overwhelmingly offered
to our health care network, which begins here in Bandon,
with Dr. Megan Holland, extends through her networking
abilities to Coos Bay, which then networks with Springfield
and Portland, through the exceptional doctors, nurses and
staff at the McKenzie Willamette Hospital, only to conclude
back here again in Bandon, with all the caring nurses and
technicians who offer services at Southern Coos Hospital and
Outpatient Clinic. Thanks to all, I can look forward to
enjoying another three decades of Eugene's fish tales, silly
jokes, and creative inspiration!
ON TO THE CREATIVE FOCUS AT SAGE PLACE...
FALL FUN BEGAN with Sas Colby's Art as Improvisation
Workshop...
California Artist, Sas Colby, presented a fabulous two-day
workshop to kick off our Fall classes. The classroom was
filled with 16 laughing, creative hearts who played the
weekend away, discovering their artistic voices and Sas'
depth of expressive talent and extensive teaching skills. A
2012 September Workshop is already in the planning stage!
THE CLASSROOM WAS FILLED WITH SUBTLE EARTHY COLORS AND
TEXTURES IN EARLY OCTOBER...
Musa, our favorite African Bead Trader joined us for two
days...
We enjoyed seeing the classroom filled with the beauty of
ancient beads from several African countries and thank our
friends at the La Kriss Inn and Bandon Inn for making Musa
feel right at home in Bandon! If you missed the African
Trunk show, or historic informational talks on African
Beads, Musa will be returning in the Spring and we will keep
you updated.
NEW ENDEAVORS AT SAGE PLACE...
OCTOBER WORKSHOPS:
Join us TOMORROW...SATURDAY, OCT. 15th, from 12-4 pm, for
"Altered and Embossed Metals with Amanda Cargill Austin".
Amanda joins us from Florence and will be introducing
students to all the materials needed to texture and tint
Vintaj brass blanks; she is a published jewelry artist whose
work has been featured in Bead Trends magazine. Students
will make several pieces for pendants and earrings. Tuition
is $50, materials fee is $10. There are still a few spaces
open and samples are on display at Sage Place. Sure to be a
blast! Wear old clothes and bring an apron!
SATURDAY, OCT. 22nd, 12-4 pm, "Viking Knit with
Embellishments" returns with instructor Sherri Carpenter.
This is an advanced workshop, for those who have had
previous instruction in the Viking Knit technique. Tuition
is $45, materials fees vary by metals choices.
THURSDAY, OCT. 27th, 9am - 11am "Tools for the Metal
Artist". Tuition $30 materials provided. This class
satisfies the pre-requisite for future sessions of "Open
Studio-Metals".
ALSO ON THURSDAY, OCT. 27th, 1-4 pm, "Open Studio - Metals"
$15 lab fee per session. This is a new format, details are
listed in the "Open Studio" section below. Students must
have previously completed a Sage Place metals workshop with
either Veneita Stender, or Anne, or complete the "Tools for
the Metal Artist" training offered at various times
throughout the year.
FRIDAY, OCT. 28th, 12-3pm, "It's Harvest Time!" Express
your love of Fall Colors with this Copper Clay Pumpkin
Pendant workshop. Join Sherri and Anne for a delightful
jump into the pumpkin patch, as you learn the basics of
capturing facial gestures, forming, firing, and embellishing
with Copper Clay. Tuition is $30 and there is a $25
materials fee. Pre Registration is required.
NOVEMBER EVENTS and WORKSHOPS...GET INTO THE HOLIDAY

NOV. 2 & 3rd..."WILD THINGS Beads" RETURNS TO SAGE for a
TWO DAY
TRUNK SHOW......J-ME and Guy will once again be filling the
classroom with treasures from Europe and Asia; normally
available only to wholesale purchasing, the beads that Wild
Things bring to Sage are rich in color and varied in style.
Special selections created in the Czech Republic just for
Wild Things are magnificent and affordably priced. And best
of all... J-ME will be teaching a fun "Retro Style - Bottle
Cap Bead" workshop. We'll keep you posted on times and
registration info.
FRIDAY, NOV. 4th, 9:30-3 pm. "Beginning Silver Soldering-
Bezel Set Ring" with Veneita Stender. Maximize your
metalworking skills in this workshop with one of Sage's
favorite instructors. Students love Veneita's skill and
creativity with metal working in all formats and soldering
is an essential skill in the art of jewelry making. Tuition
is $52 with a $40 materials fee. Students need to bring a
flat backed stone or fused glass piece to use in learning to
make the bezel, sides of the cabochon need to be tapered for
best results. Pre-registration required, Max. 8 students.

Catherine Spinner". Learn to turn local sea treasure into

Catherine will guide you gently through the entire process
and you will leave with a beautifully crafted and
embellished basket, not to mention a host of laughs and
memories. Tuition is $45 plus $5 materials fee.
FRIDAY, NOV. 19th, 1-4 pm. "Intro to Glass Fusing -
Christmas Ornaments". Robin Z. returns to Sage for Holiday
fun! Students in this workshop will learn to make two
styles of ornaments, using frits and strip glass. *Meets
the Tools Training prerequisite for "Open Studio- Glass"
sessions. Tuition $30, with $12 materials fee.

Pendants-Fusing for Jewelry". Learn to fuse glass pendants
with a channel for cords, chain, or stringing; also learn to
make multiple matching small cabs for bracelets.
Intermediate level. Tuition $40 plus $20 materials fee.
THURDAYS, Dec. 1, Dec. 8, Dec. 15, "Open Studio- Metals",
1-4 pm. $15 per session. Completion of "Tools for the
Metal Artist" or intro level metals workshop at Sage with
either Veneita or Anne required. Special projects
available to make during open studio:
Dec. 1 - forged and riveted Christmas earrings, Dec. 8 -
wire wrapped embellished stocking ornament.
SATURDAY, Dec. 10th, 11-3 pm, "Sun Catcher Saturday-Glass
Window Decorations" Join Anne for a fun-filled day of
creating beautiful colored glass adornments. We will be
using one of our favorite products, No-Days Adhesive for glass,
as well as learning the basics of copper foil - stained glass
working. Tuition is $30 with additional ost for pre-cut, glass
projects, range $10 and up.
DROP IN FOR OPEN STUDIO...It's NEW...
Want to make a gift for that special someone? Short on room
to work at home? Perhaps you started a project that you
just didn't quite know how to finish, saw something in a
magazine you want to try, or maybe you just enjoy working in
an energy-filled creative environment; open studio is for
you!
Sage Place will now be offering select dates and times
for you to join us in the classroom, in an unstructured
format, with guidance and support from our staff. Bring in
a project you want to work on, or purchase a kit in the
Sage Place store; we'll help you bring all the pieces
together. New kits will be continually introduced to our
selection and some Open Studio days will have specialized
projects you can elect to try. Prices on kit projects will vary,
$2 and up.
PREREQUISITE FOR OPEN STUDIO USE...
Although we will have assistants available to help you in
the studio, this time is reserved for those who already
possess basic skills in the areas of: Metals, Glass, and
Beading (with the exception of simple stringing/crimping
techniques which we are happy to assist you in learning). Metals
and Glass studio time requires completion of an introductory
level workshop at Sage Place, with either Anne or Veneita, or
completion of one of our "Tools for the Metal Artist", or "Tools
for the Glass Artist" workshops.
GLASS sessions are currently available for stained and some
types of fused glass; working with powdered glass is not
available except in specifically scheduled classes. Limited
tools are available for checkout by students; some may
require additional tool fees. We do not
currently offer on site firing for projects not completed in
our own studio.
METALS sessions are limited to cold joining, wire working,
and precious metals clay techniques; soldering is not
available except in specifically scheduled classes.
Metal tools are available for non-ferrous metals: silver,
copper, brass only at this time. Use of some tools may
require an additional tools fee.
BEADING sessions will soon be added; assistance is limited
to: stringing, crimping, finishing, problem solving, and
designing. Beginning students interested in detailed
instruction in specific stitches, such as: peyote,
herringbone, right-angle weave, netting, etc. may schedule a
private lesson with Anne, or attend a Sage Workshop;
additional fees apply to private
lessons and specific workshops.
COSTS AND REGISTRATION FOR OPEN STUDIO...
THERE IS NO NEED TO PRE-REGISTER...Space is available on a
first come first served basis for all open studio sessions.
SIMPLY PAY BY THE SESSION, as you attend.
Cost: $12 for beading, $15 for metals, and $18 for glass
studio time.
Sessions are scheduled as fixed three hour blocks of time.
When offered/space permitting, students may participate in
more than one session per day; however, each session carries
it's own separate fee. Studio time must be pre-paid at the
beginning of each session.
TO ENSURE A COMFORTABLE AND SAFE CREATIVE WORKING
ENVIRONMENT...
The studio is open only when trained staff are
available to supervise use; in the event of a change in
staff scheduling needs, we may be unable to open the studio
on occasion. Therefore, we do recommend calling ahead, to
verify open studio hours, the day you wish to attend :
(541) 329-0303.
Sage Place reserves the right to limit the number of
students who may attend each session and the tools and
materials that may be used.
Sage Place has available all materials and tools
necessary for the creation/fabrication of projects
appropriate to our own studio. For purposes of safety, we
will not allow power tools, certain non-powered tools, or
chemical materials to be brought in from outside sources. We
thank you for your understanding and encourage you to ask
approval, if you are planning to bring items with you

Sage Place will require a signed waiver for the use of
tools, glass, and other materials and reserves the right to
restrict/refuse access to the studio, to any individual, for
any reason.
PURCHASING SUPPLIES DURING OPEN STUDIO...
a materials tab may be run for students who wish to
purchase supplies during Open Studio time - we offer
10% discounts on purchases of most items during the day of
attendance. All materials fees must be paid daily, 1/2
hour before close of sessions.
AGE RESTRICTIONS for OPEN STUDIO USE: Sage Place staff
works very hard to ensure a safe, positive creative
exprience for all visitors.
Glass and Metals Studio use is currently limited to Ages 18
and above.
Beading Studio time is available for Ages 14 and above.
Depending on the medium to be used, younger artists may be
allowed to use the studio under certain, pre-approved
conditions, when accompanied and well supervised by
parent/gaurdian.
Subject to availabilty, we will also gladly arrange a
private workshop, and possible open studio time, for small
groups, family reunions, birthday celebrations and more.

WATER...
On Sunday, October 16th, we will formally close our Gallery
located in Old Town's Historic Coast Guard Building. We
have enjoyed over four wonderful years, represented over 90
different artists, and hosted dozens of receptions and
community activities in our historic gallery setting by the
river. Special thanks, to all of our visitors who joined us
this past Sunday, for one final artists' reception. We will
miss the view from this lovely building and offer much
appreciation to the Port of Bandon for being gracious landlords,
since we opened in 2007.
SAGE Gallery will continue to represent several of your
favorite artists and will be hosting special exhibits and
events at our 11th Street location in the New Year.
Connecting the artists we showcase with the collectors who
seek their work is an exciting endeavor for us and we will
continue to do so in a more personalized format.
Many of the artists who will continue to be represented by
SAGE have their work currently on exhibit. Included in our
current show are works by: Kimberly Wurster, Pat Snyder,
Heather
Bouher, Susan and Steve Dimock, Carolene Doss, Donna Wright,
Ron Wright, Jean Kyle, Lois Miller, Robin Ziuchovski, and Sherri
Carpenter.
If you have missed the current exhibit, you still have time;
gallery hours this week are: 4-8 Today, 2-6 Saturday, and
12-4 on Sunday. Although we will leave the large Gallery
space behind in the Coast Guard Building, I will continue to
maintain a working studio there, in suite 2A. Please feel free to

little different path for my family than planned this
summer, delaying my previous goals; however, now is the time

BEFORE I JUMP INTO THE NEWS AND ACTIVITIES...
I have some heartfelt thoughts I hope you won't mind my
sharing...
THANKSGIVING CAME EARLY TO SAGE...AND TO ME...
Although we have had some amazing and commendable events in
Bandon this summer, it is not tourism and entertainment upon
which I wish to reflect and offer thanks, rather the
community support that makes it possible for us all to
create, produce, and enjoy those engaging activities on a daily
basis. My early Thanksgiving appreciation is
extended to the network of people who helped care for my
husband, Eugene, before and during his recent surgery, and
throughout his recovery over the summer.
On a personal level, the friendship and support of our many
friends, and even new acquaintances, poured in, reminding us
of what is so unique about living in a small town. Our
wonderful neighbors and a score of other friends jumped in
with offers of everything from, house sitting and lawn
mowing, to homemade dinners and dog walking!
On a larger scale, my appreciation is overwhelmingly offered
to our health care network, which begins here in Bandon,
with Dr. Megan Holland, extends through her networking
abilities to Coos Bay, which then networks with Springfield
and Portland, through the exceptional doctors, nurses and
staff at the McKenzie Willamette Hospital, only to conclude
back here again in Bandon, with all the caring nurses and
technicians who offer services at Southern Coos Hospital and
Outpatient Clinic. Thanks to all, I can look forward to
enjoying another three decades of Eugene's fish tales, silly
jokes, and creative inspiration!
ON TO THE CREATIVE FOCUS AT SAGE PLACE...
FALL FUN BEGAN with Sas Colby's Art as Improvisation
Workshop...
California Artist, Sas Colby, presented a fabulous two-day
workshop to kick off our Fall classes. The classroom was
filled with 16 laughing, creative hearts who played the
weekend away, discovering their artistic voices and Sas'
depth of expressive talent and extensive teaching skills. A
2012 September Workshop is already in the planning stage!
THE CLASSROOM WAS FILLED WITH SUBTLE EARTHY COLORS AND
TEXTURES IN EARLY OCTOBER...
Musa, our favorite African Bead Trader joined us for two
days...
We enjoyed seeing the classroom filled with the beauty of
ancient beads from several African countries and thank our
friends at the La Kriss Inn and Bandon Inn for making Musa
feel right at home in Bandon! If you missed the African
Trunk show, or historic informational talks on African
Beads, Musa will be returning in the Spring and we will keep
you updated.
NEW ENDEAVORS AT SAGE PLACE...
OCTOBER WORKSHOPS:
Join us TOMORROW...SATURDAY, OCT. 15th, from 12-4 pm, for
"Altered and Embossed Metals with Amanda Cargill Austin".
Amanda joins us from Florence and will be introducing
students to all the materials needed to texture and tint
Vintaj brass blanks; she is a published jewelry artist whose
work has been featured in Bead Trends magazine. Students
will make several pieces for pendants and earrings. Tuition
is $50, materials fee is $10. There are still a few spaces
open and samples are on display at Sage Place. Sure to be a
blast! Wear old clothes and bring an apron!
SATURDAY, OCT. 22nd, 12-4 pm, "Viking Knit with
Embellishments" returns with instructor Sherri Carpenter.
This is an advanced workshop, for those who have had
previous instruction in the Viking Knit technique. Tuition
is $45, materials fees vary by metals choices.
THURSDAY, OCT. 27th, 9am - 11am "Tools for the Metal
Artist". Tuition $30 materials provided. This class
satisfies the pre-requisite for future sessions of "Open
Studio-Metals".
ALSO ON THURSDAY, OCT. 27th, 1-4 pm, "Open Studio - Metals"
$15 lab fee per session. This is a new format, details are
listed in the "Open Studio" section below. Students must
have previously completed a Sage Place metals workshop with
either Veneita Stender, or Anne, or complete the "Tools for
the Metal Artist" training offered at various times
throughout the year.
FRIDAY, OCT. 28th, 12-3pm, "It's Harvest Time!" Express
your love of Fall Colors with this Copper Clay Pumpkin
Pendant workshop. Join Sherri and Anne for a delightful
jump into the pumpkin patch, as you learn the basics of
capturing facial gestures, forming, firing, and embellishing
with Copper Clay. Tuition is $30 and there is a $25
materials fee. Pre Registration is required.

NOV. 2 & 3rd..."WILD THINGS Beads" RETURNS TO SAGE for a
TWO DAY
TRUNK SHOW......J-ME and Guy will once again be filling the
classroom with treasures from Europe and Asia; normally
available only to wholesale purchasing, the beads that Wild
Things bring to Sage are rich in color and varied in style.
Special selections created in the Czech Republic just for
Wild Things are magnificent and affordably priced. And best
of all... J-ME will be teaching a fun "Retro Style - Bottle
Cap Bead" workshop. We'll keep you posted on times and
registration info.
FRIDAY, NOV. 4th, 9:30-3 pm. "Beginning Silver Soldering-
Bezel Set Ring" with Veneita Stender. Maximize your
metalworking skills in this workshop with one of Sage's
favorite instructors. Students love Veneita's skill and
creativity with metal working in all formats and soldering
is an essential skill in the art of jewelry making. Tuition
is $52 with a $40 materials fee. Students need to bring a
flat backed stone or fused glass piece to use in learning to
make the bezel, sides of the cabochon need to be tapered for
best results. Pre-registration required, Max. 8 students.

Pendants-Fusing for Jewelry". Learn to fuse glass pendants
with a channel for cords, chain, or stringing; also learn to
make multiple matching small cabs for bracelets.
Intermediate level. Tuition $40 plus $20 materials fee.
THURDAYS, Dec. 1, Dec. 8, Dec. 15, "Open Studio- Metals",
1-4 pm. $15 per session. Completion of "Tools for the
Metal Artist" or intro level metals workshop at Sage with

Dec. 1 - forged and riveted Christmas earrings, Dec. 8 -
wire wrapped embellished stocking ornament.
SATURDAY, Dec. 10th, 11-3 pm, "Sun Catcher Saturday-Glass
Window Decorations" Join Anne for a fun-filled day of
creating beautiful colored glass adornments. We will be
using one of our favorite products, No-Days Adhesive for glass,
as well as learning the basics of copper foil - stained glass
working. Tuition is $30 with additional ost for pre-cut, glass
projects, range $10 and up.
DROP IN FOR OPEN STUDIO...It's NEW...
Want to make a gift for that special someone? Short on room
to work at home? Perhaps you started a project that you
just didn't quite know how to finish, saw something in a
magazine you want to try, or maybe you just enjoy working in
an energy-filled creative environment; open studio is for
you!
Sage Place will now be offering select dates and times
for you to join us in the classroom, in an unstructured
format, with guidance and support from our staff. Bring in
a project you want to work on, or purchase a kit in the
Sage Place store; we'll help you bring all the pieces
together. New kits will be continually introduced to our
selection and some Open Studio days will have specialized
projects you can elect to try. Prices on kit projects will vary,
$2 and up.
PREREQUISITE FOR OPEN STUDIO USE...
Although we will have assistants available to help you in
the studio, this time is reserved for those who already
possess basic skills in the areas of: Metals, Glass, and
Beading (with the exception of simple stringing/crimping
techniques which we are happy to assist you in learning). Metals
and Glass studio time requires completion of an introductory
level workshop at Sage Place, with either Anne or Veneita, or
completion of one of our "Tools for the Metal Artist", or "Tools
for the Glass Artist" workshops.
GLASS sessions are currently available for stained and some
types of fused glass; working with powdered glass is not
available except in specifically scheduled classes. Limited
tools are available for checkout by students; some may
require additional tool fees. We do not
currently offer on site firing for projects not completed in
our own studio.
METALS sessions are limited to cold joining, wire working,
and precious metals clay techniques; soldering is not
available except in specifically scheduled classes.
Metal tools are available for non-ferrous metals: silver,
copper, brass only at this time. Use of some tools may
require an additional tools fee.
BEADING sessions will soon be added; assistance is limited
to: stringing, crimping, finishing, problem solving, and
designing. Beginning students interested in detailed
instruction in specific stitches, such as: peyote,
herringbone, right-angle weave, netting, etc. may schedule a
private lesson with Anne, or attend a Sage Workshop;
additional fees apply to private
lessons and specific workshops.
COSTS AND REGISTRATION FOR OPEN STUDIO...
THERE IS NO NEED TO PRE-REGISTER...Space is available on a
first come first served basis for all open studio sessions.
SIMPLY PAY BY THE SESSION, as you attend.
Cost: $12 for beading, $15 for metals, and $18 for glass
studio time.
Sessions are scheduled as fixed three hour blocks of time.
When offered/space permitting, students may participate in
more than one session per day; however, each session carries
it's own separate fee. Studio time must be pre-paid at the
beginning of each session.
TO ENSURE A COMFORTABLE AND SAFE CREATIVE WORKING
ENVIRONMENT...
The studio is open only when trained staff are
available to supervise use; in the event of a change in
staff scheduling needs, we may be unable to open the studio
on occasion. Therefore, we do recommend calling ahead, to
verify open studio hours, the day you wish to attend :
(541) 329-0303.
Sage Place reserves the right to limit the number of
students who may attend each session and the tools and
materials that may be used.
Sage Place has available all materials and tools
necessary for the creation/fabrication of projects
appropriate to our own studio. For purposes of safety, we
will not allow power tools, certain non-powered tools, or
chemical materials to be brought in from outside sources. We
thank you for your understanding and encourage you to ask
approval, if you are planning to bring items with you
(541) 329-0303.
Sage Place will require a signed waiver for the use of
tools, glass, and other materials and reserves the right to
restrict/refuse access to the studio, to any individual, for
any reason.
PURCHASING SUPPLIES DURING OPEN STUDIO...
a materials tab may be run for students who wish to
purchase supplies during Open Studio time - we offer
10% discounts on purchases of most items during the day of
attendance. All materials fees must be paid daily, 1/2
hour before close of sessions.
AGE RESTRICTIONS for OPEN STUDIO USE: Sage Place staff
works very hard to ensure a safe, positive creative
exprience for all visitors.
Glass and Metals Studio use is currently limited to Ages 18
and above.
Beading Studio time is available for Ages 14 and above.
Depending on the medium to be used, younger artists may be
allowed to use the studio under certain, pre-approved
conditions, when accompanied and well supervised by
parent/gaurdian.
Subject to availabilty, we will also gladly arrange a
private workshop, and possible open studio time, for small
groups, family reunions, birthday celebrations and more.

On Sunday, October 16th, we will formally close our Gallery
located in Old Town's Historic Coast Guard Building. We
have enjoyed over four wonderful years, represented over 90
different artists, and hosted dozens of receptions and
community activities in our historic gallery setting by the
river. Special thanks, to all of our visitors who joined us
this past Sunday, for one final artists' reception. We will
miss the view from this lovely building and offer much
appreciation to the Port of Bandon for being gracious landlords,
since we opened in 2007.
SAGE Gallery will continue to represent several of your
favorite artists and will be hosting special exhibits and
events at our 11th Street location in the New Year.
Connecting the artists we showcase with the collectors who
seek their work is an exciting endeavor for us and we will
continue to do so in a more personalized format.
Many of the artists who will continue to be represented by
SAGE have their work currently on exhibit. Included in our
current show are works by: Kimberly Wurster, Pat Snyder,
Heather
Bouher, Susan and Steve Dimock, Carolene Doss, Donna Wright,
Ron Wright, Jean Kyle, Lois Miller, Robin Ziuchovski, and Sherri
Carpenter.
If you have missed the current exhibit, you still have time;
gallery hours this week are: 4-8 Today, 2-6 Saturday, and
12-4 on Sunday. Although we will leave the large Gallery
space behind in the Coast Guard Building, I will continue to

Ava Richey's Art News
Hi Everyone,
This coming Monday, October 17, 2011, 11:00 a.m. - 3 p.m., we will be painting at the Coach House Restaurant in Eastside (near Coos Bay). They have an outdoor covered dining area in a garden setting where we can paint and eat lunch, in case the weather is inclement. If no rain, we could paint the views of the slough across the street.
They serve a great lunch, if you would like to eat there too.
Take Hwy 101 to through the first traffic light you come to when entering Coos Bay from the south, then make a right to go across the bridge to Eastside. Veer left after you cross the bridge. The restaurant is on the right hand side just past the O'Neill's Doors and the Pepsi distributor.
If you would like to carpool or caravan, we will meet at 10:30 a.m. by Bree's at the north end of the parking lot at Ray's Food Place in Bandon. Please let me know if you plan to meet at Ray's so we don't leave you. :)

Submission Deadline: Friday, April 20, 2012
Artists working in all 2- and 3-dimensional mediums, including installations, are invited to submit images of their work along with an application form to be considered for the next biennium (2013-2014) of exhibits at the Maude Kerns Art Center. Submissions may include solo, group, and/or themed shows. There is a $15 submission fee for individual artists and a $5 fee per artist for group shows.
The postmark deadline is Friday, April 20, 2012. Application forms and prospectuses are available at the Art Center or online at http://www.mkartcenter.org/

The Maude Kerns Art Center, located at 1910 E. 15th Avenue at the corner of 15th and Villard, is Eugene’s oldest non-profit community center for the visual arts. Gallery hours are from 10:00 am to 5:30 pm, Monday – Friday, and noon to
4:00 pm on Saturday when exhibits are on display.
This coming Monday, October 17, 2011, 11:00 a.m. - 3 p.m., we will be painting at the Coach House Restaurant in Eastside (near Coos Bay). They have an outdoor covered dining area in a garden setting where we can paint and eat lunch, in case the weather is inclement. If no rain, we could paint the views of the slough across the street.
They serve a great lunch, if you would like to eat there too.
Take Hwy 101 to through the first traffic light you come to when entering Coos Bay from the south, then make a right to go across the bridge to Eastside. Veer left after you cross the bridge. The restaurant is on the right hand side just past the O'Neill's Doors and the Pepsi distributor.
If you would like to carpool or caravan, we will meet at 10:30 a.m. by Bree's at the north end of the parking lot at Ray's Food Place in Bandon. Please let me know if you plan to meet at Ray's so we don't leave you. :)

Explore with Susan Lehman various ways of incorporating words and pictures into your collages! Discover layering techniques, with both transparencies and actual text.
You’ll learn scratching and writing into textured backgrounds, using stencils and stamps, as well as image transfers!
Design elements and the importance of a focal point will be demonstrated along with working with a limited palette to create several cohesive collages. All materials are provided, so dress for mess! We’ll be using acrylic paints, gels, and glazes!
Resources will be shared on a hand-out with all process directions.
