‘Tis the season…when merchants are merry and Master Card glows, when children are nestled and reindeer are…well doing what reindeer do and aren’t you glad that Santa doesn’t need a pooper scooper or Christmas morning would take on a whole ‘nother look!
And parents, poor beleaguered parents are frantic with shopping and cooking and wrapping and cheering and assembling and what do they get for all of this work? The bill, first thing come January 2.
Now I know asking anyone to take a minute and think during the holiday season is heresy, but that’s exactly what I am going to do. What have you asked for this Christmas and what are you going to do about getting it?
Did you ask for a new studio with the very brightest lighting or a new set of brushes, pencils, pastels, or some special fifty weight paper? Did you get a kiln or a wheel, some packets of beads or an armature for your next sculpture?
How ‘bout asking for a new skill instead, “Oh sure, just what I need, a new skill when I haven’t master all of the techniques to really do what I am doing now and this yahoo wants me to go out and try something different!”
Yes, that’s exactly what I want; I want you to pick up a new skill set. Don’t do it for me, don’t do it for your Aunt Hermione, don’t do it for the environment, (Okay you could do it for the environment), do it for yourself.
Mastering one technique is the task of a lifetime and as artists we become so focused on doing one thing well we often overlook the “Big Picture.” (If you have no idea what that is see ‘Creator’ with Peter O’Toole and let Harry explain the Big Picture to you.)
Yea, right so big shot what is the big picture? I don’t know. For me as a photographer it’s re-learning how to draw. I am seeing things I never noticed before, the relationship between geometric shapes and anatomy, the tones between black and white and the damnable fact that women just are too perfect to draw with any real hope of success.
But I am also seeing how the subtle play of light across the human form makes a magic all of its own. The old masters had it right; there just is no substitute for drawing the human form. So how ‘bout joining the Plein Air group in Port Orford for the figure study classes? It’s only once a month, (I did get that right didn’t I Ava?) and the cost is sixty-five dollars split between all of the participants. That’s less than the cost of a latte. Coffee or art, you make the call.
So maybe figure study isn’t your answer. Maybe the shifting play of shadows on skin do nothing for you and you’d rather stare at a dead plant than see a nikked human. What about color? Are you getting all of the colors of the South Coast on your canvas? If not try pastels or colored pencils, maybe you’ve always wanted to sculpt, have a go, it won’t hurt a bit.
It doesn’t matter what you try so long as you try something. Give yourself the gift of skill this year. When the wrapping paper is strung from one end of the house to the other and the toys are all broken and the MP3 players are burning out the ear drums of the entire next generation and when dad has the HDTV playing three different ball games at once, will you be wishing you could die so you could live happily ever after? Or will you slip away and bring out that scluntch of clay and grab a knife and start modeling? Angelina Jolie could be lurking in that clay or maybe you favor Jurassic Park, a steam ship to sail away from it all or a rocket to ride the comet’s tail, it all there, just waiting. Now pick up your tools and go get it.

Doing IT
I’ve done it. You may have done it. There are people doing it right now. But should you?
No, what did you think I was talking about? Entries. That’s right, those fat envelopes that come after you respond to a Call to Artists. They have all those confusing papers with places for you to fill in the blanks and sign?
And what do you do with them? That’s right, you chunk them in the drawer and forget about them until the very lastest moment. Or you fill in the entry forms and then toss the rest ‘cause once you’re in the rest doesn’t matter.
But it does and part of being an artist is having respect for other people’s time and effort. It takes a ton of labor to get a show on its feet. You know those labors Hercules was set to complete? They actually gave him a choice between mounting a show and doing the twelve labors and he picked cleaning up the stables ‘cause it was easier and cleaner!
The papers which come in the fat envelop are the necessary documents to keep a show running. They include registration, insurance, shipping and receipt. And they are a big deal.
Registration tells the organizer just how many and how large the entries are so they can prepare the space and if, (I know painting art the only real ART, but on the oft chance you don’t paint) you do three dimensional works they’ll have to make special arrangements. A gallery isn’t like the holodeck where you can change reality to fit any fantasy. It’s a space and someone has to make it fit all of those fantastic pieces of art.
Insurance is what will pay for your work if some deranged art critic tosses a Molotov cocktail into the museum. Okay so more likely we’re talking roof leak or storm damage, but if your irreplaceable work gets damaged, you’d want some measure of compensation and the gallery sure isn’t going to have the ready cash. They’ve got a fund raiser scheduled to help cover the light bill.
The shipping page in that package tells folks how you expect to get your stuff back if it doesn’t sell. Now I know you are an artist in demand and you don’t have to bother with this stuff ‘cause you sell out everytime. But just in case you don’t, fill in the paper work. And if you’re a local do it anyway. The staff wants to be sure all the art work goes back to the right place and if you are going to walk it in they need to have that on file so they don’t accidentally give your work to the FedEx guy and it winds up in Bugtussel and you definitely don’t want that.
And don’t forget to fill out the receipt. I know you know what you have entered and I know that you are so famous and recognized that no one could possibly mistake your style for anyone else’s but do it anyway. And then keep it and bring it with you when you pick up your art.
Do all of this and you’ll be a favorite with the staff and organizers and your entry will be a welcome addition to any show. They give their time to get your work on the walls. Shouldn’t you make their job a little easier? You do want to be invited back…

"12x12 Exhibition" call for entries
(Posted: 10/13/10) -- Art Affair Gallery in Sanford, FL announces an exhibition opportunity for original works of art which are 12"x12" in size, including, but not limited to painting, drawing, digital work, photography and assemblage. Civil War Day
The next time you hear someone crying about how hard art is, try shoveling rock.
Yes, while OSU and Oregon have been duking it out I have been shoveling rock. Now it is true the road needed it. See in its infinite wisdom, Coos County stopped maintain my street. In the year and a half since they decide not to play, my little street turned into the dark side of the moon. I mean the Sea of Tranqulity has nothing on Evergreen Lane when it comes to craters.
Yes, Crater Lake is bigger, but only a little. When we started filling in the holes we found two Volkswagens, a dromedary and three missionaries.
What does this have to do with art? Nice of you to ask, art is a gift, it requires dedication, practice and hard work, but don’t for a minute think that doing art is labor. It isn’t, shoveling rock is labor and hard labor at that. This would discourage me from a life of crime.
See artists like to think what they do is harder than just about anything and don’t get me wrong it is pretty hard. Gene Fowler said it best, “Writing is easy. All you do is sit staring at a blank sheet of paper until beads of blood form on your forehead.” Visual art is very like writing only the beads of blood form on the roots of the hair you’ve ripped from your scalp.
But it is not labor, at least not if you are doing it right. Art is like love, all consuming, passionate and divine. Does that sound like labor to you? (If you don’t understand labor ask any woman the second hour of labor.) Art isn’t that rough. Men do it, isn’t that proof enough?
We all believe that we are creating the greatest art of all time and that that process is like dying but having to come back the next day and start again. And when the vision stops we throw up our hands and scream “I’m blocked!” Yes, it does happen to artists who don’t write.
Well don’t you believe it. You may be stumped for an idea of what to do next, or lost about how to fix a project that’s gone just a little off course, but you aren’t blocked. You wouldn’t put up with plumber’s block or rock shoveler’s block so don’t lean on artist’s block when you run dry for a week or two.
And yes, I whine as much, maybe more as any other guy, so the next time you hear me grousing or moaning or winging, remind me about the pile of …rock I spent Civil War day shoveling. Can’t tell you how warm and comfy my computer room with all of my processing toys or my sketch pad with all of my lousy, distorted bearded ladies looks after a day in the cold.

We will be joining the Port Orford First Monday Painters this coming Monday, December 6th, Noon - 3 p.m. at the Port Orford Public Library for Figure Drawing/Painting with Lani.
The cost is $65 to be shared by the group, so the more participants, the less expensive it is per person.
Figure drawing/painting really does influence all of your other painting.
