The city of Seattle can't get enough of Picasso and why not, the modern master has a style for every man and mood.

The Greatest Show on Earth

A bit far afield from the South Coast but then we don't have a chance to see one of the most controversial and influential artists of the world in our own backyard.

Picasso showed the world a new way of seeing and brought a unique vision to art. He fractured the human form and deconstructed anatomy and from the ruins he made dramatic images scream off the canvas, Guernica is one of the most devastating antiwar images ever presented.

But do not think for one minute he did this because he could not draft an anatomically correct image. Take a look at his "Blue" period paintings and you will see he was a master draftsman.

Whether you delight in the passion and vision of the Impressionists or deplore their haphazard assault on the Rule of structure Picasso is one of the most significant artists of our time and should be part of any creative person's experience.

The Award Show

So you’ve decided that the show is up and you’ve seen as much as you want to see, so when is the next show?

Have you forgotten one little thing? There’s a People’s Choice Award to be awarded and you are the awarder? That’s right, you. If you think that a show without a jury is just a beauty contest then it probably is. If the serious, committed artists of the community sit idly by and don’t vote or don’t return to vote then it almost certainly will be a beauty contest won by the beauty who can bully, threaten and force all of their friends and family into the museum to vote.

Winner and still champion, the guy with the biggest family.

Is that what you want, the biggest show of the season, the most diverse and complex showing of art in the South Coast won by ballot stuffing?

If you don’t want that to happen why are you reading this when you could be at the Coos Art Museum voting? Vote, it is the right and duty of every person and unlike the political arena, there wondrous things to vote for. All you have to do is pick one.

There are just too many to pick one! I know too many people in the show I wouldn’t want to offend anyone by voting for just one. I don’t have time to study the entries and make an informed decision.

So you’ll let an uninformed opinion rendered by someone who doesn’t know any of the artists, made by closing their eyes and pointing get the private show?

There is great art, there are great artists, there is great variety and great diversity and all you have to do is vote. Vote for someone you know, vote for someone you like, vote for a piece which makes you dumb with its brilliance, but vote.

Vote for Susan Lehman, Kelle Herrick, Pat Snyder, Mike Holm, Kimberly Wurster, S. L. Donaldson if you prefer well known artists, or vote for the unknown like me if that makes you feel like you’ve been resourceful, vote for Jardin Kazar, maybe he’ll bribe you with food, vote for a photograph, a painting, a sculpture, a portrait, a nude, a mask, just vote.

This is the largest open show on the South Coast, artists plan for a full two years to prepare their pieces for this show. Make its winner worthy of all of the hope, planning and skill, vote for your favorite; make the People’s Choice Award really the choice of the people.

How to Put Pizzazz into Your Artist Statement

A description of why and how you create offers collectors, patrons, gallery owners and the viewing public, an indispensable portrait of you, the artist. As your work grows and changes, so does your Artist Statement. It’s a crucial document to have on hand at public hangings, to include with juried exhibition work, as well as with your sold pieces. By writing down the aim and/or ideals of your art, you’ll be able to speak confidently about your work at receptions and show openings. Elements from your Artist Statement will become incorporated into press releases and news articles.

Through games, fun exercises and role playing, we’ll arrange colorful phrases, collage facts, encourage our artist self to tell his or her story and then we’ll frame our “Artist Statement” with a quirk or a quote. Bring a pen, a notebook and a positive attitude.

Presented by Shinan N. Barclay, M.A., a well-published writer and multi-media artist, who had the good fortune to be cradled into a world of art. Her parents met in a watercolor class at the Chicago Arts Institute; they married and as artists, raised seven children. Her uncle, Rollo May, author of Love and Will and The Courage to Create, enlivened her passion for art. A former member of the San Diego Watercolor Society, Shinan wrote art reviews for the San Diego Museum of Modern Art. Later, living in Sedona Arizona she wrote reviews of artists and gallery openings, and was a member and keynote speaker for the Arizona Watercolor Society. Her watercolors, photographs, handmade tiles and ceramic art have each earned their own one-woman show. A member of BAAA, her work has been exhibited in the Maritime Exhibit, Artist Loft, Cottonwood & Bay Moss Galleries as well as included in collections worldwide. “Creating your Artist Statement is not only the first step to having your work known,” Shinan says, “it’s a fundamental document that expands and develops along with your calling as an artist.”

SAFE AND SANE HALLOWEEN IN REEDSPORT

If you can't find something to do in North Bend and Coos Bay why not travel up the road to Reedsport and join in the celebration. They have something for everyone, games for the kids, art for the not-so-kids and scares and shivers for everyone. The Bad Bead Girls of Florence will be there, displaying their latest creations. If you go early you might be able to pick up a Miss Skully necklace for the party at The Mill. Just a thought.




Pumpkin delivery begins on Thursday, there's a murderous mystery for Friday and on Saturday don't miss the terrors of the haunted maze.



I'll even forgive them for ripping off the name of MY murder mystery company, but then I don't suppose any of these guys have ever been to Texas. Oh well, I still have my logo. Go, do and enjoy the big doings in Reedsport, so you won't be haunted by regret on Monday.
