Local Favorites Puppeteers for Fears to Return to Coos Bay to Perform “The Cabaret at the End of the World” at the Egyptian on Wed, Oct. 19th, presented by So It Goes Coffeehouse!
Comedy troupe Puppeteers for Fears will return to Coos Bay to perform a new original show, The Cabaret at the End of the World, at The Egyptian Theatre on Wed., Oct. 19. Adv. tickets are $15, and available on www.soitgoescoffee.com.
The show will be a Vaudeville-style collection of original songs, dance numbers, and skits performed with hand-and-rod (Muppet style) puppets and a live band—as well as with PFF’s special brand of over-the-top horror and science fiction comedy.
“This show is exactly what the name implies,” says company director and playwright, Josh Gross. “The puppets are trying to hold off the end of the world by fighting despair with jokes and songs—which is a feeling a lot of us can relate to after the last several years.”
Pieces to be performed include ghosts narrating graverobbing in song, lullabies for a noisy werewolf, rap battles between web-connected smart appliances, family drama amongst aliens, the puppet comedy roast of William Shakespeare, and more. To fully embrace the variety show format, the play will even include original live commercial jingles.
“It will be a fast and funny show,” says Gross. “There is a special energy to this piece.”
Because of inability to perform during the Covid-19 pandemic, this will be Puppeteers for Fears’ first show since summer 2019.
“When Covid happened in 2020, and things started shutting down, it was immediately clear we would be one of the last things to come back,” says the company’s Artistic Director Josh Gross. “Between traveling around and the game of Twister behind the puppet house, there was no way to do it safely until everything stabilized.”
Now that PFF is back in action, it is eager to not waste time. For its debut, The Cabaret at the End of the World, will be performed at a seven-date tour around the state of Oregon, and the company hopes to stage a broader regional tour in spring.
“Everyone is ready,” says Gross. “We all need to laugh.”

The Cabaret at the End of the World will run 90-120 minutes, and include R-rated content. It was directed by longtime PFF performers, Alyssa Matthews and Katy Curtis, and stars Forest Gilpin, Jake Raiter, Hunter Prutch, and Alyssa Matthews, with music performed live by The Elephant—who will also open the show with a set of their original material.

Show Your Colors
Art by the Sea Gallery and Studio invites you to a Reception on Saturday, Oct 1st, 2-4pm., for the opening of “Color, Bright and Bold,” a community show with original works by participating artists. The show’s judge, Jim Davenport, will be announcing the prizes and awards.
Beautiful Fused Glass artworks will also be exhibited by October’s Featured Artist, Anne Sobbota. Visitors can meet and greet the artist from 12-1:00.Artworks by gallery members will also be on display throughout the gallery. We’ll be serving wine, and visitors may enjoy some homemade baked goods during the event.
The monthly Art Drawing celebrating our 10th Year Anniversary will also take place. September’s art pieces are a beautiful Art Gourd, “10 Tall Lotus,” donated by Sunny Kudo, and a lovely Fused Glass Jellyfish by Susan Tree. The drawing for October will be paintings by Ava Richey and Sandy Schroeder. The winners of these art pieces will be drawn at November’s reception to those who have submitted their name and phone number. These pieces will be on display starting October 1st. This Art Drawing is a “Thank You” to the community for the wonderful support given to the gallery over the past ten years and will be held each month throughout the year.
The gallery is open 10am to 5pm daily.

Back in the Saddle
South Slough Reserve Reopens to the Public
South Slough Reserve has reopened to the public, following a closure due to extreme wildfire danger
Starting today, Monday, September 12, the Reserve will return to its
regular operating hours. The Visitor Center is open every Tuesday -
Saturday, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Trails are open daily from sunrise to sunset.
On Friday, September 9, South Slough Reserve was closed after the
National Weather Service issued a Red Flag Warning for southwest Oregon
indicating critical fire conditions. The Red Flag Warning has since been
lifted, following the movement of cooler, moist weather into the
region.
Oregon is still in the middle of wildfire season. Visitors are asked to help prevent wildfires by following burn restrictions and fire-safe practices when recreating at the Reserve.

Closure
South Slough Reserve Closed Due to Extreme Fire Danger
South
Slough Reserve is closed to the public until further notice, due
extreme fire danger. The closure includes access to all trails and the
Visitor Center.
The National Weather Service has issued a Red Flag Warning
for southwest Oregon indicating critical fire conditions. Strong, gusty
winds with low humidity and high fire danger can cause significant
spread of new and existing fires.
Stay safe and help protect our community by following burn restrictions and avoiding activities that could cause stray sparks.
Updates will be posted to the South Slough Reserve website.
