Folk music, singing and dance at Ocean Ridge
COOS BAY — The South Coast Folk Society will present an afternoon of live folk music, international folk dance, and group singing at 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20 at Ocean Ridge Assisted Living, 1855 Ocean Blvd SE., Coos Bay. There'll also be opportunities to get up and dance under their instruction; no partner or experience required. Live music will be provided by Cultural Ecology. SIXES — Camp, jam, socialize and dance at the South Coast Folk Society's "Contra at the Coast" weekend July 31-Aug. 2 at Sixes Grange, 44556 Highway 101, five miles north of Port Orford. On Saturday, Aug. 1, enjoy contra dancing and old-time squares 7-10 p.m. to the lively tunes of the Outstanding Open Band and local callers Greg McKenzie, Karen Olsen and Stacy Rose. Admission is $5 for adults, and children are free. No experience is necessary; the caller teaches every dance. Come promptly at 7 p.m. for a beginners' lesson. On Sunday, Aug. 2, enjoy "Waltzes at One" 1-2 p.m. and then Scottish, folk and English country dancing 2-4 p.m. At other times during the weekend, join the Outstanding Open Band for acoustic jams and fun at Edson Creek Campground.

Food for the Gypsy in Your soul

Join award-winning watercolorist Hyon Fielding for an en plein air
watercolor workshop Thursday, Friday and Saturday, August 6, 7 and 8,
2015 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. In this workshop students will learn how to
simplify subjects in both nature and complex settings such as busy
harbors or urban areas. Each day will incorporate a different plein air location, such as the Charleston Harbor, Downtown Coos Bay, and Shore Acres State Park.
The
instructor will provide illustrations and short lectures on the
elements and principles of design, as well as guidance on how to
critique your own artwork throughout the creative process. Techniques
for using tools, fundamentals of color mixing, and achieving harmonious
composition by defining shapes and providing balance will also be
discussed.
Hyon
Fielding’s qualifications include being a watercolor journaling
instructor for the Oregon Paleo Lands Institute, instructor for the
Watercolor Society of Oregon and teaching classes for various regional
art guilds and private individuals. For more information about her

3-day, adults-only watercolor workshop is designed for artists of all
skill levels. Fee is $190 for CAM members, $220 for non-members
