Getting Out in the Rain

I know you saw an old man in a big boat taking two of everything in and then the dreaded rodent saw his shadow and you knew that winter was going to be hanging around for a whole lot longer and then your fuzzy slippers called your name and you checked the fridge and there was plenty of beer and wine and there were half a dozen new programs you didn't get to see because of the Stupid Bowl game and you said “I'm not moving again until that delayed spring gets here.”

But then you'd miss the reception for Art by the Sea's Eye on Photography Saturday, February 7, from 2-4 PM at the beautiful Art by the Sea gallery in Old Town Bandon, where the Ole Trawler and the Long Sufferin' will be putting in an appearance and will be waiting for you to arrive and if you don't arrive then we will have to wait and then Art by the Sea will start charging us rent because we have stayed so long and we won't have the money to pay our income taxes and the FBI will come or the United States Marshals will issue a warrant for our arrest and the the black helicopters will circle Art by the Sea gallery and you don't want that to happen so you will just have to get dressed and get in the car and come to Old Town Bandon, you were going to stop at the Creamery anyway and then you will be in Bandon already so you might just as well stay until Sunday or even if you do weasel out and want to sleep in your own bed you can still come back on Sunday for the opening of Paula Reis' show at the Bandon Library.

That show is from 11-1 on Sunday, Sunday, Sunday at beautiful Green Valley Raceway...no that was a flashback but it is Sunday from 11-1 at the Bandon library where you will get to see what a real photography can do with something you have lurking around your house all of the time but don't take a moment to stop and really look and that is why Paula get her own show and you have nothing to do on a Sunday cause football season is over and you never really got into soccer or hockey and over-tall men in boxer shorts running up and down is kinda silly so you have no excuse not to go to the opening and that's why you will be in Bandon two days this weekend in spite of the groundhog!

Any rodent who takes a bite out of a politician is a rodent for me, but I hope they got him immediate treatment. Biting a politician is toxic to living things.

Second Sunday Sing-Along

Sunday, Feb. 8, 4-6 p.m., at the North Bend Library. We've got the Rise Up Singing songbooks.

Contra Dance Saturday, Feb. 14

At Greenacres Grange at 7 p.m. Caller: Stacy Rose of Coos Bay. Band: Mad Robin (they're hot!). Admission: General $7, students w/ID and seniors over 60 $6, members $5, and supervised children under 6 free.  First-timers who arrive in time for the 7 p.m. lesson will receive a ticket for free admission to their second dance. The dances are alcohol- and fragrance-free. Bring your Valentine, find a new one or just have fun being your own Valentine.

Celtic Session

First and third Wednesdays (Feb. 18, March 4) 7-9 p.m. at Liberty Pub, 2047 Sherman Ave, North Bend. Play or listen!

International Folk Dance 

Friday, Feb. 27. Starts at 7 p.m., Greenacres Grange. Teaching, followed by requests. Admission is $4, or $3 for members of SCFS.

Celtic Fest is coming!

The fifth South Coast Celtic Fest is coming May 2. It's growing into a multi-day event -- check out the growing list of "fringe events" before and after at southcoastfolksociety.wordpress.com/south-coast-celtic-fest/. But the main event is still Saturday May 2 at SWOCC. There will be workshops all day; free entertainment on the Hales Center Stage all day; and an evening concert with The Stomptowners (Maldon Meehan, Andrea Wild, Sean Earnest and Preston Howard) and Hanneke Cassel with Mike Block and Chris Lewis. We love Celtic Fest because it's the Folk Society's biggest fundraiser of the year. It subsidizes the contra dance. So bring your friends and make a day and a night of it!

Crafty? Share your talent

Craft workshops have been popular at Celtic Fest, and we still have a couple of slots to fill in the daytime workshop schedule. If you think you could teach a 45-minute craft workshop, check out the attached flyer.

Folk Week update from coordinator Stacy Rose

Plans continue to take shape for South Coast Folk Week – a week-long series of activities scheduled for October 4-10. Mark your calendars – you don’t want to miss any of the wonderful activities we are planning for musicians, singers, and dancers in the community!

We’ll kick off the opening evening, Sunday, October 4, with a concert featuring Firefly Family Band. Coming to us from North Carolina, members of Firefly have been making music together for 20 years. Firefly specializes in reinterpreting  older music of the rural and urban south: Appalachian fiddle tunes, gospel, blues, swing, and old time country. In addition all four members are accomplished percussive dancers and often incorporate traditional step-dancing  at live shows. A short sound clip (Ragtime Annie/Greasy Coat) to whet your appetite is attached. Plan to come out and welcome our band to Coos Bay!

Come with your 6 month to 5 year old to Coos Art Museum for this final class of the Tot and Me series and prepare to get messy!  Bring your favorite toy on wheels and try out painting with “All Things with Wheels” in this Kids@CAM program taught by Geraldine Sundstrom on Wednesday, March 4, 2015 from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.  Whether painting with trains, planes or automobiles “All Things with Wheels” is certain to be filled with lots of artistic creativity!

Geraldine is a 2012 graduate of St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wisconsin and has a B.A. in Fine Arts.  As an art instructor she draws upon ten years of experience in child and adolescent recreational activity programming as well as an extensive and multi-faceted professional background in visual art.

A new art exhibit at the Coos Bay Library showcases the work of Michael William Ousley.  The exhibit called "Face the Music". features portraiture influenced by a variety of music styles.  The artist has drawn from musical experiences acquired while residing in such exotic places as Athens, Greece and Barcelona, Spain, to visualize the medley of emotions and lyrical compositions.  Michael invites you to visit the exhibit and see if you agree with the graphic interpretations of the songs.

 

The show runs from February 1 to February 27 2015.

Subject: Art & poetry exhibit at the Port Orford libray

 

    They are delighted to announce that they are going to host an art and poetry exhibit again 2015.  This is a call to artists to send a photo of a piece of wall art to Weld Champneys at weldandelm@gmail.com or bring it to the Library by February 13.  Once they have the photos in hand, the call will go out to poets interested in interpreting artwork..  The art & poetry exhibit will open March 20, 2015 and be on display at the Port Orford LIbrary for three months. 

The Port Orford Library is right on 101, address is 1421 Oregon Street [the name of 101 in PO] or PO Box 130, Port Orford, Or.  97465.

It’s easy to send your photo by e-mail to Weld, but if you would rather you can take your photo to the library.
