Snow Day

Did you take a snow day?

I won't tell. It was dark, cold and the snow was piled high when I got up and the only thing I wanted was a cup of strong tea.

No, I don't drink coffee any more. too many deep nights drinking police coffee. You know the stuff, just cut off a plug and stick it between cheek and gum. So after running around the ceiling for a coupla days I gave it up.

Then a few years back, the Long suffering and I went to London. there are some people who would call sucha trip a trip to England, but once you have been to the Capitol City of the World you will know there is a difference between London and England.

While in London, Dr Johnson was right, "When a man is tired of London he is tired of life!", i picked up two new habits, drinking English beer and tea. I've had to give up the beer, the life of a diabetic is painfully  austere, but I've kept on drinking tea.

Can't get John Smith's Smooth over here anyway so giving up beer wasn't all that hard. tea, well, the tea they drink isn't the pale boiled water we see here, no it is rich, red, powerful stuff and I've been completely unable to get my eyes open without a cuppa.

So I still operate on caffeine drive just from a different source. they have Twinnings English Breakfast tea at the Safeway in North Bend, you should get a tin and try it, you'll never drink coffee again.

So there I was staring out of my fogged windows looking at the white stuff while my tea brewed. I don't actually brew it. I cheat. I make it in a Mr. Coffee and that works just fine. and after about ten minutes or so I noticed it was snowing.

Fast on the uptake, I know. So I started making my plans at that moment, water-proof shoes, heavy coat, gloves and camera, tucked between me and the coat and once soaked in tea, out i went to take advantage of the second snow fall of this winter.

It really hasn't been much of a winter, mostly warm and rainy, so a snow event is delightful. the Long Suffering had to go in to Coos bay and open the museum, so she wasn't too happy, but I was fine. after all i didn't have to drive on the slick stuff!

I didn't venture far from the house. My thermostat is kinda messed up from y adventure with the Croaker last summer. I actually get cold!. That's never happened before. I've always had to hide from the sun and the heat and living in Texas for most of my life you can imagine how much fun I had form March to October. But since coming to Oregon I've enjoyed the strange new world of the outside. Now I'm having to wrap up before I go out, but you can always put on enough clothes to stay warm, the opposite is not true and may even be against the law.

*Cultural note: If a woman takes off all of her clothes and jumps nekkid into a fountain, it's a photo-op. If a man does the same thing its a felony!

So there I was looking like I just escaped from the Peanuts comic strip, layered to the point that there was some question about whether my joints would still work, trudging around in the snow taking pictures, cause you can't get snow pictures except when it snows and aren't painters lucky that they can get snow pictures anytime they want them because they can create any kind of climate they like but photographers have to go out in the snow if they want snow pictures.

And I got them.

And I hope that you grabbed your coffee and camera and went out to lay in a stock of snowy pictures to Currier your Ives for the rest of the winter!

Blarney

The wind rattles the shutters and the light inside the room flickers, there’s a cold in the bones and there are things outside that go bump in the night, even when it isn’t night, bring the jar and load the pipe its time to gather round the table and talk a little treason…cause St Paddy’s Day is just around the corner.

They say March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb, but I am pretty sure whoever said that had never been to Oregon.
The weather here on the Coast can be wild almost anytime of the year and it never seems to go out, like a freight train out of control or a mouse scurrying across the room or anything less than a stamped of wild horses.

So with the wind and the rain and the cold, it is time to think of things, which can be done inside the quiet, warm house. Now you could try to lure spring into an early start, or you could do summer scenes and try to get your brain to believe it is warm, but why not invite the little people into your homes and spend some time enjoying the ole Sod?

There is something about the Irish spirit which makes one want to tell tales, not all of them tall and not all of them treasonous, talk of the wee folk under the hill or sing of the glories of the days before the revolution, of the mighty men and the brave deeds and then with a wink and a grin and maybe just one more wee dram, a grin and a wicked tale of fun and some naughty doings by a farmer’s daughter or a maid with her geese, or was it sheep, I heard it both ways…

You can’t ever tell just when that Irish rogue started pulling your leg, but you know it is a story so good that you don’t mind a bit, even if for reasons of health you have foresworn the daemon and drink nothing, but water.

So maybe it’s time to bring to mind some of those picturesque tales and paint a scene of Irish mirth, struggle, love, fantasy or bravery.

You know that John L. Sullivan, himself was a man of the Green and no one dared slander the Irish to his face. How ‘bout it, want to square up with John L. and do some bare knucks fighting? Those fists up, squared away, stand tall boxers of the nineteenth century can make for a wonderful composition.

The Landscape of Ireland, with or without the wee folks who live under the hill is green and lush and filled with herds of sheep, flocks of squawking geese and spring lambs, if you can’t make a picture out of that you need to rethink your calling.

What of those incredible Irish cottages with the thatched roofs? Sure they’re a fire hazard, but you don’t have to live in one to paint it.

Me, I like fireplaces. The Long Suffering has, (An elevated sense of order and cleanliness which declares that all fireplace are nasty, filthy things requiring more effort than the are worth), banned fireplaces from all of our homes, but I can still have one if I create it in two dimensions. And in truth I prefer the rough stone fireplaces so frequently present in Irish cottages, maybe with a sheleighly resting by the hearth or a dog cured up on the rug. Yeah, I know too Norman Rockwell.

So, that’s what I have done, I did one of those Irish cottages with the sheeighly, but sans the dog and I’m posting it here to kick start you engines.

Sure you can come up with your own Irish themed painting/sculpture/photo, but I want you to start today.

See come Saturday, March 17, 2012 I want you squarely in front of your television watching one of the delicious Irish movies.

Now for the Seniors in the audience, you’ll want Finnian’s Rainbow. And who could question the choice of Fred Astaire even if he isn’t dancing just smiling and twinkling as only Fred Astaire could twinkle.

Or perhaps you’d like something less musical? The Informer, for which Victor McLaglen won his only Academy Award, will make you watch in horror as a good man with a weak spirit descends into betrayal and despair. (More about Victor later.)

If you are an X or a Y’er you’d probably like something less well, old. Try The Matchmaker. You’ll find a host of familiar faces, Jeanane Garofalo, Denis Leary and Milo O’Shay offer some laughs and don’t be surprised if you hear some of the candidates try the same tricks in the next several months. Speaking of tricks, Waking Ned Devine has a few up its sleeve. And of course it also has gratuitous nudity, always a plus.

If there are kids in the house or you want to make peace with your Long Suffering put on Darby O’Gill and the Little People. The kids will love it, and that colleen of yours will melt over Sean Connery before Bond, fresh off his Mister Universe appearance. Sad to say that was the worst he would ever look and yes, I am now and have always been jealous of Sean the Magnificent!

But if you really want the Irish experience watch The Quiet Man. This is the one for which John Wayne should have won the Oscar. Maureen O’Hara is fiery, fierce and packs a wicked right, the Irish Mafia fills in all of the character roles with Ward Bond and Arthur Shields making even the most dedicated agnostic believe in spiritual leaders, Victor McLaglen going fifteen round with Big John.

You do know that McLaglen got that smashed nose going ten rounds with John L. Sullivan, himself. He takes a lickin’ from the Duke but in a real Brannigan he’d mop the floor with ole John.

Still, John Ford’s love letter to Ireland stands up to the years and is worth watching again and again.

Now hurry the Bishop is coming and I want yous all to line the roads and cheer like good Protestants, for the Rev Playfair, good man that he is and maybe he won’t get reassigned!

Attitude

I have in recent days been reminded of just how important attitude is to anyone working in the Arts.

Sure you can claim that ego and attitude are the same and sometimes you’d be right, but now every time. In fact the attitude I want to talk about is not the “King of the World” stuff, but the quiet, inner self-confidence which supports the creative person working alone.

You have to have IT.

No, silly not that IT, that’s for keeping your network running which can be important to your attitude but it isn’t the It I want you to focus on, it’s the It which makes you keep working on what you know is right even if everyone else says, “You’re nuts!”

I’ve said before that this is the only business where one’s value is measured by someone else. That’s true but it cannot be allowed to damage your self-worth. Sure, selling is a hard rough, mean part of the business of art, but keeping your head together is just as important.

There are at least two components of every artist’s life, the part where you can’t fall asleep or get out of bed fast enough, where there aren’t enough hours in the day, where the thought of taking time to eat, sleep or bathe is just too petty to interrupt your work and the part where you have to suck up to some Philistine and make them like you so that you can sell them your work.

And it is hard to keep the two parts apart.

See I’d rather be working on the pictures I’ve taken, twisting and turning and manipulating them, making ordinary things into fantastic dream images, but oddly enough, most people don’t want that in their kitchen. They want nice cats or still life or boats. Boy, talk about strange, remember where I come from a boat is what you take to Hubbard on Saturday to drag the skiers around and hope like hell one of them is a girl in a tiny bikini. But a working boat? Nope, you just can’t catch much fish in the Trinity.

That’s the river which used to run by Dallas. It has been used as a filtration system for raw sewage for so many years that the smell on a warm summer day can take down an Apache attack helicopter at two miles and the only things which still live in it are turtles and alligator gar, fish so mean and ugly they’d make Godzilla yank his toes out of the water. Course no danger of that cause no human would stick his toes in that green/gray sludge which oozes by Dallas. Yeppers, working on a boat is not something I have much understanding of, but I know around these parts folks get positively weepy about boats, sleek boats, fast boats, old, rusty, dead, sunken boats.

So I know that if I want to finance my manipulations there are boats in my future.

And I do go looking for images of boats and the water which I can make into selling art.

Then there’s the part when I get to play.

I find something which catches my eye and the idea comes and before you know it I have a memory card full and am sitting in a darkened room staring at a computer screen making the images change before my bleary eyes. Fun, fun, fun…

But oddly enough not so many folks want to pay for my fun. They think I ought to do something they like.

So there you have it, the sad story of art from the dawn of time, fun or money?

Fun can’t win that one. You have to do what the client wants and make it work for their eye or they just don’t pay and then you can’t get out to recess and do that thing you do.

How do you survive working for someone else’s taste when what you want to do is make your own stuff? Painters have always had this problem. They get commissions from clucks who want to look better than they are and you have to make them or they just don’t come across with the clams.

It’s that attitude I want you to think about. That little voice which says, “I’m right and everyone else can go to…”

But while you are saying this artist’s mantra keep one eye on your image, cause it is so easy to slip from confidence to arrogance.

The opposite is true too; you can loose your attitude and never venture out for fear that you just aren’t good enough.

Remember what I said at the beginning of this tale, art is ultimately judged by someone else. You may be right, you may not be good enough to satisfy yourself, but maybe the buyer doesn’t have such exacting standards?

You just have to get out of the cave and take your art with you. You don’t want to be like the Cro-Magnon kids, you paint wonderful images on cave walls and then have to wait two hundred and eighty-seven thousand years for someone to find it?

Maybe the Gen X and Y’ers don’t do the cave thing, ever think about that? If you aren’t going to stick up for your own art nobody else will.

So here we are, back where we started, ego or attitude? Probably you need some of both. Enough self-confidence to keep working on what you believe in and yet enough self-awareness to know when you are joining the lemmings, guys we live too close to the sea to be lemmings!

The Pocket Bakery

The Pocket Bakery

For the linear reader this would not be a happy choice; the Pocket Bakery is a lyrically written, poetically expressed, philosophical commentary on contemporary culture and values in the twenty-first century.

The flaws are few and do not mar the flow of the narrative; at times the author’s word choice is overly complex and perplexing, but the writing style is so engaging it makes the whole an enjoyable read.

If you seek a linear mystery The Pocket Bakery is not for you, but if you are willing to venture into the deeper waters of thought and global rational you can make a meal on The Pocket Bakery.
