Didja get out today?
It was colder than a witch’s…okay maybe that particular characterization isn’t fair to witches. Maybe they don’t get all that cold and if they do who’s to say that any one part of a witch gets any colder than any other, right?
So it was cold and a good day to stay inside. It was cold enough to make going to work a good idea and that kids is cold!
But cold also brings some interesting opportunities for image making and that is what I want to ask you about, Didja get any pictures of all of the winter stuff today.
It was raining, a cold and nasty rain when I left the house this morning. On the way over the mountain, yes, I know Libby doesn’t go over a mountain, but I’m from Texas and anything higher than a speed bump qualifies as a mountain, so on my way over the mountain there was snow. It made the forested parts of Libby look down right Currier and Ivesie.
When I got to Coos Bay, it was dry but very bitter. That’s a lot of different slices of the weather pie for one day. Did you make use of it?
Come-on, you won’t get this kind of chance all that often, even here on the Oregon Coast where the weather changes like a host at the Oscars. You have to get out at least long enough to take a few pictures so that when you get back inside you can add them to whatever project you are working on.
A coupla things to consider, take a picture. Yeah I know you are a painter and don’t hold with the magic box which steals the very soul form things, but let me tell you, that magic box lets you grab an image and get back in the warm studio.
You know damn well you are not a nineteenth century artist, living in a garret, un-heated, drafty and starving. You eat regularly, paint with pre-mixed paints and have central heat in that studio and that makes for a much happier artist. If Vinnie the Go had had central heat he might still have painted sunflowers but he wouldn’t have been driven to ear surgery by the cold uncomfortable studio.
So, grab a camera and get out and take a picture or two when the weather offers this sort of quick change wonder and then duck back inside and get warm.
Now when you do go out, protect your camera.
Back in the Paleolithic area when I started taking pictures the biggest cold weather fear was condensation between the lens elements. Want to ruin an expensive lens fast? Take it from a seventy degree studio out into thirty degree weather and watch as the water forms inside the elements where you can’t get at it. If you are lucky, letting it sit for a week or so in a warm dry place will evaporate out the moisture. If not, you have a most interesting bookend.
Now the big problem is battery life. You don’t even think about your batteries, you charge the camera when it runs down and you forget about it until you want to use it and the battery is dead cause it sat on a shelf for half a year and didn’t move and now you are fit to be tied cause Brad Pitt parked his yacht in the channel and took a swim across to the north spit in the buff and your camera was a doorstop.
Cold can suck the life out of a battery in half an hour. Don’t take your camera out in the cold without giving some thought to how to keep it warm.
Now the easiest way, for those of you who are goil sort of people and if you are a small guy this works too, buy a jacket a coupla sizes too big. No silly, this is your utility jacket, get it at Goodwill or the Hospice or the Salvation Army, the object is to keep you and your camera warm, not impress the tar out of George Clooney.
See if it is too big you can tuck the camera between your warm body, your body is still warm isn’t it, and the jacket and keep the camera and your bod warm and ready for action. When you want to take a picture pull it out take the picture and put it right back inside where it will stay warm and safe and the batteries will live to go stale on your shelf.
This will also help acclimatize the lens so that condensation doesn’t get inside the elements. This isn’t the problem it was when 35 mm was king, the new digital cameras use lenses which are smaller in size while being bigger in reach and they have tighter construction so water isn’t as welcome as it once was.
Once you get your pictures and get back in the house get them out of the camera so that even if there is some lasting effect from the cold they won’t get eaten.
And why would you go to all of this trouble?
Because the light on cold bitter days does good things and even the most common objects start to look like fine art.
Not being able to keep my hands off it I did give it a little tweak.
Okay, so I did more than a little tweak.
But I couldn’t have done any of it without going out into the cold.
Oh yes, not once did I encounter any witches with or without extremely cold…noses!

Nose Art
No it has nothing to do with rings or piercing no nothing like that at all. Nose Art is the forgotten, almost lost tradition of personalizing the war craft of flyers.
See I told you it didn’t involve anything getting punctured.
First you have to remember that it was only a brief window in time, those years between the beginning of World War II and the end of the Korean War. Sure flyers still personify their planes and men still sail in ships they call by women’s pronouns, but the glory days of Nose Art last less than a decade.
Okay, now for a lesson in telling time. Unlike the scholars and the scientists, we all know that decades do not break on the decimal system. We call them by their decimal enumerators, the Thirties, The Forties, The Fifties and the Sixties. But the truth is culture lags behind the calendar. The decade of the Forties really ran from 1936 through 1945. The Fifties ran from 1946 through 1955 get it? Or do you really think all that free loving, flower powering, drug-crazed, rock fueled sixties stuff started in 1960?
Come on, in 1960 the Kingston Trio and the Four Freshman still topped the charts, the Beatles were playing in Liverpool and Keith Richards still had all of his original blood.
So what we call the Forties are really The War Years and what we call the Fifties are really the Post-War Years plus Korea.
In those fleeting times when passion was hot, jazz was cool and planes were deadly, the Nose Art of the Great War Birds came into life, blazed against the horizon and then passed.
Most of the men who painted the art are long gone and the plane, those mechanical wonders are now scrap or in the hands of the few, who flew them, loved them, and can afford to keep them.
And that means if we don’t step up right now, that art, so vivid and wonderful and so amazing being the work of unpaid amateurs will be lost forever.
So, have you ever thought about it? Have you tried to include it in your own work? Have you looked it up at least?
This is a serious page devoted to the artists and heroes who fought the wars and painted that wonderful art. Have a look and see if you don’t get just a bit choked.
This site isn’t so serious, but it is full of the paintings which went to war and made the guys feel like they had more than just a machine under them.
Now take a minute and think about this art.
It was painted freehand, by men not professionally trained artists, using whatever materials were available in war time, painted on the side or the curved nose of a bomber or fighter aircraft, which might have had extreme damage to its skin and done in stolen moments between critical missions.
That any of it was good is a miracle, that most of it was excellent is inspirational.
This isn’t the boxy art of the still life where the artists can set up his little diorama and light it exactly as it needs to be to bring out all of the tones and make the shadows give three dimensions where there are only two. No this is guerilla art composed on the fly, done in snatches without good lighting or sleep or expensive paints or stretched canvas.
And it ain’t abstract art, where things do not have to be completely recognizable in the “real” world, this is art for the ordinary men, fighting and getting killed and not sleeping or eating or resting, things pretty much have to look right.
And what things are they supposed to look right at? Girls! That’s right, the bulk of Nose Art is pin up art and a guy who has been flying two missions a day for thirty days straight might not know a Klee from a Weyth, but he damn sure knows what a girl looks like.
The Memphis Belle, Betty Boop, Ill Wind and so many others, they were the girls they guys loved the best and took to war and counted on to get tem back in one piece.
The next time you sit staring at your canvas or paper or clay trying to wring an idea out of the ether, think about those guys in the air over Europe or Japan, Korea, South Viet Nam or The Gulf and maybe you’ll see an inspiration in satin floating on a cloud and wearing nothing but a smile and luck and you’ll know just what it was all about.

Biological Threat
If you were planning on enjoying the Fine Art of S. L. Donaldson this weekend, I have bad news. S. L. has come down with the Infernal Rippling Death and cannot leave the house nor would you want her to. Fortunately this is only a temporary plague and S. L will once again be up and taking awards in no time flat. The exhibition of her works at the estuary has been rescheduled for March 17 barring mischief by wily Leprechauns.
The Pasteboard Easel
It has happened to all of us, the news of a big show comes in late, there’s a moment of blind panic and then a frenzy of desperate preparation and the rush to the post office or the hurried Internet submission.
But wait, there’s a problem, you have to get that entry ready and that means making a disc and getting the art onto that disc.
No problem-o, you can do that sort of thing in your sleep. You just set up the art on an easel, light the image correctly and take a picture, easy, peasy, calabresy!
You have the camera, you have the proper lighting tools cause you’ve been reading the ole Trawler, you have the disc ready, but there’s no easel. Sure you have the one in the studio, with the sixty by forty unfinished oil on it, drying slowly as only an oil can dry. Can’t move that puppy. You my friend are toast!
But once again, the Ole Trawler has come to your rescue. Disclaimer, this will in no way replace the steady, professional easel you use to create your art. It will get you out of a bind and it costs nothing and takes less than half an hour which should fit both your budget and your schedule.
You need at least one maybe two sheets of heavy cardboard, ¼ an inch, 3/8 is better and by ½ you’re getting into more trouble than it is worth territory. You need a flat-head screwdriver old and worn out is best, with the blade dull and rounded. You need a Xacto knife or a box cutter, a ruler, a pencil or felt-tip and good light.
I know around here that means either work lights or move to Nevada.
Okay, so take the sheet of heavy cardboard and mark off a three inch wide strip at least ten inches long. (This is where having two sheets of heavy cardboard comes in handy; you can cut up one and save the other for the body of the easel.) Cut this away from the sheet and then cut it into two five inch strips. Set them aside and move on.
Take the sheet, you did find two, right? Take the sheet of heavy cardboard and mark off a three inch wide strip along the bottom edge. Use the pencil or felt tip to mark this so that you have a guideline. Take the screwdriver and carefully score or crease the line you marked. Don’t cut through the cardboard! This is why I said use a worn-out screwdriver. Once you have scored the line carefully bend it ninety degrees. If you failed basic math this makes a right angle or makes a shelf-like lip. You need this for the art to sit on.
Now take the two five inch strips and carefully mark off the center point, two and a half inches if you have trouble figuring this center thing out and from the center point mark off one inch in each direction. You should now have three marks, one in the center and one in each direction one inch from center. Select either side mark and make a parallel mark one quarter inch or three eights inch whichever your cardboard requires and mark it. Measure one and a half inches from the edge of the strip and mark that. This is the top of the slot you are going to cut so make your side lines reach this top mark and close the lines. Now you should have two slots marked on the five inch strip. Take the box cutter or Xacto knife and cut out the slot. Do this on the other strip too.
Now you have three pieces of the puzzle, let’s put it together. Take the back piece of the heavy cardboard, the one with the right angle lip and using one of the five inch strips lock the right angle lip into place. Don’t make it hard, it just means use the five inch strip to hold the lip in place. Now do the same on the other side.
Holy scaffold Batman, you now have an easel!
Wasn’t that hard?
Here’s the secret, you can use this to photograph any flat object you need to photograph, you can display paintings on it in a bind and you can take it apart and carry it into the filed and us it when you go plein air painting. If it gets wet, burned, spindled, folded or mutilated, if the dog eats it or if it gets stolen, you can make another one. Remember the cost part of this presentation, you used cardboard. If you’re like me you have enough empty picture/frame boxes lying around to build a space shuttle and this is so much easier and practical. And oh yes, once again, it’s free.
Next class, building a death ray from stuff you find in an ordinary cat box…
