Fame, Fortune and Fowl

Birdwoman of Coos County, Kelle Herrick has brought more fame and fortune, okay, so fame and a coupla bucks, to her collection of awards and honors, she has been selected as the Salem Audubon Society’s 2010 Photo Contest Grand Prize winner. And no wonder, when you see the work she offered for this contest you will weep, (sell your camera, join the French Foreign legion, etc, etc…) And so without further ado, brouhaha or clap-trap, here is the big winner.



Now I personally wouldn’t get up at three in the am, slog through the marshes, and carry a hundred and fifty pounds of equipment like a surfer Sherpa, but when you do pictures like this happen. Damn! The girl is goooooooood. Could you see if maybe some of those fowl would take a ten o’clock brunch meeting?

We will be painting at Giddings Boatworks, 63106 Troller Rd, in Charleston on Monday, September 13th, from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m. Turn south on the road at the east end of the drawbridge (by Charleytown) and go to the end of the road.

Pick a spot where you would like to paint. Stay out of the way of the working folks and park out of the way please. There is a restroom on site.

We will meet at the Sea Basket Restaurant (6350 Kingfisher Rd) by the Charleston Boat Basin at 12 Noon for lunch if you would like to eat before painting.

If you would like to carpool or caravan from Bandon, please meet me at the north end of the Ray's Foods parking lot (close to Bree's) on Monday at 11:15 a.m.

Coos Art Museum is having their annual fall fundraiser "Fall Fling". Help support our regional art museum by donating a painting for their auction. You can also send another painting for sale and get 50% of the sales price back (if it sells), and you set the minimum bid price. You get the painting back if it doesn't sell.

To make it easier to donate, you can drop off your paintings at Bandon Artist Supply (541-347-4482) between now and next Tuesday, September 14th at 3 p.m. That's when Pat Snyder will come from Coos Bay to pick them up and take them to the Coos Art Museum for us. He volunteers at the museum and is helping facilitate the process.

GUIDELINES


Eligibility
Open to all artists—painters, sculptors, photographers and printmakers—over 18 years of age. Artists are invited to submit up to three original works of art on any theme related to fish, sport fishing or the fishing industry. Works selected by jurors from submitted entries will be chosen on the basis of creative excellence and quality of execution. All works must be original and completed within the last two years. Coos Art Museum’s “Fish and Fishing Art” jurors will be the final authority on eligibility. Accepted works meant for wall hanging must be ready with all necessary hardware in place.

General Rules Artists may submit up to three (3) entries, with a non-refundable fee of $15 for the first entry and $10 each for the second and third submissions. These entries must have been created within the last 2 years (2009-2010) with an unframed size limitation of four (4) feet by eight (8) feet and a weight limitation of 50 pounds.

ELIGIBLE ART MEDIUMS: Allowed with the following criteria

Paintings – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Drawings – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Hand pulled prints, etchings, serigraphs – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Photography (film or digital) - limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Mixed media – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame.
Fiber & textiles – wall hangings – limitation of 48 inches in any direction – this includes the frame
Fiber & textiles – wearable – must supply display device
Small sculptures – weight limitation of 50 lbs and 48″ in any direction
Glass – blown, fused or leaded stained – if to be suspended, must include a secure hanging or display device
Turned and carved wood – weight limitation of 50 lbs and 48″ in any direction
Jewelry – only if ALL elements were created by the artist
NOTE: If your work is a replica of another person’s work – Title MUST contain notation of the original work and original artist. Example: “……….A Study of the Mona Lisa, by Leonardo DaVinci”

INELILGIBILE ART MEDIUMS: Not allowed

Video, motion picture film, audio, computer generated digital works, giclée prints of original fine art.
Furniture.

ACCEPTANCE: Coos Art Museum reserves the right to reject any work(s). Receipt of works at the Museum prior to the opening does not constitute acceptance into the exhibition.

Submissions can be either digital files or slides.

Digital files must be in jpg format minimum of 300 dpi at approximately 8” x 10” all on one CD-ROM. All CD’s must be labeled, on the outside, with the artist’s name, title of the work, medium, date completed, and size of the collages/assemblages. Name the electronic files as follows:

Abbreviate as needed on the electronic file name, but be sure the entry form has complete information.

NO SLIDE SHOWS, FLASH FILES, THUMBNAILS etc.
NO SUBMISSIONS VIA EMAIL WILL BE ALLOWED
Slides must be 2″ by 2″ mounted, each marked with the artist’s name, title of the work, medium, date completed, and size of the painting. Please denote the top of the work on the slide and submit in a plastic jacket. No glass-mounted slides will be accepted.
If you are submitting a work that is part of a series, the submitted piece MUST be unique and distinguishable from any of your other works of art. Works that have previously been exhibited at Coos Art Museum are NOT eligible.
All information on the original entry as to title, size and price must remain the same on the accepted entry. Entries must be original in concept, composition and execution. Artwork created under the supervision of an instructor is not eligible. Artwork must not be copied, in part or wholly from any published or copyrighted work.

Deadline for submissions is a postmark of October 9, 2010.

Send submissions, completed forms and entry fee to Coos Art Museum, 235 Anderson Ave. Coos Bay, OR 97420. Include with your entry a self-addressed, 6×9 stamped envelope (SASE) for submissions CD and slide return and acceptance letters with shipping information. Notice of acceptance will be sent by October 22, 2010.

Winning an Award
The winning First Place will receive a cash prize of $500.

The winning Second Place will receive a cash prize of $350.

The winning Third Place Award will receive a cash prize of $250.

4 Honorable Mention ribbons will also be awarded.

Sales
The Museum will make resumes of artists whose works are accepted available to visitors during the exhibition. Works may be available for sale. Artist agrees to donate 30% of any sale to Coos Art Museum. The artist is to be paid three weeks from end of show. Please price your works with this in mind. Your entry confirms all terms of this agreement.

Delivery and Pickup of Art Works

Artists whose work is accepted must have artwork delivered to the museum via carrier service at their own expense for arrival between November 29 and December 03, 2010. Hand delivered work will be received at the museum on Friday, December 03, 2010 between 10 am and 4 pm, Saturday, December 04, 2010 between 1 pm and 4 pm and Sunday, December 05, 2010 between 10 am and noon. Coos Art Museum will not pay for return shipment of artwork. Artists must make pre-paid arrangements to have their work returned to them, or may pick up their work in person at the museum on Saturday, February 19, 2011 from 4-6pm and Sunday February 20, 2011 between 10am and noon.


General Specifications

Two-dimensional works must be wired and ready for hanging and be no more than four (4) feet by eight (8) feet, excluding the frame. If done on a gallery-wrapped canvas, the art must encompass the sides of the canvas. Non-hanging pieces must be no larger than eight (8) feet in any direction, no heavier than 50 pounds and ready for display. If special display is required, directions must be included with the piece. All work must be labeled on the back or underside with the artist’s name, address, and phone number. Labels must also show the work’s Title, Medium, Date of Creation, and (retail) value of the piece as set by the artist. Art is insured while in the museum from November 21, 2010 through February 14, 2011.

The Selection Committee will have three Jurors:

Juror: Don McMichael
Juror Don McMichael served 20 years in the United States Coast Guard before retiring to pursue a career in art. While in the Coast Guard he developed a deep respect and admiration for the ocean and the underwater world of marine wildlife. Best known for his depictions of whales and other marine mammals Don has exhibited his art throughout the United States and abroad, and has received awards from such notable exhibitions as the Audubon Society and Mystic Seaport during their annual international shows. He is also an artist member of the prestigious American Society of Marine Artists, artist member of the United States Coast Guard Artist’s Group, avid supporter of the Cousteau Society, Center for Whale Studies and numerous other marine conservation organizations.

Juror: Anne Sobbota
Juror Anne Sobbota is the owner/manager of SAGE Gallery in Bandon, Oregon. Founded in 2007 SAGE represents about 85 artists from the West Coast and beyond. Anne is a graduate of California State University in Los Angeles with a BA degree in Art Education and an MA in Art History. She taught photography and television production in Corona, California for ten years and art history at Pasadena Community College and Glendale Community College. In addition to being an avid photographer she is also a specialist in the history of photography.

Juror: Andy Charles
Juror Andy Charles is a resident of North Bend, Oregon and an avid outdoorsman. A largely self-taught artist Andy has been painting and drawing since his boyhood days in Maryland. Before moving to Oregon he served as Artist in Residence at the Carnegie Art Center in Walla Walla, Washington. Occasionally Andy has done commissioned illustrations including a children’s book for the chief diver of the Cousteau Expeditions. He works in a variety of media including prismacolor, watercolor and oil. His works are noted for precise detail and a wide range of subjects including travel, history, surfing, wildlife and fishing scenes.


Coos Art Museum:

“Coos Art Museum is the cornerstone of visual arts on Oregon’s Southern Coast. Through collections, exhibitions and educational programs, we are building an arts and cultural community and promoting the appreciation, understanding and expression of visual art.” Located on the scenic southern Oregon Coast Coos Art Museum is the 3rd oldest art museum in Oregon. CAM traces its roots to the Coos Artist League, active since 1950. Members of the League conducted early operations in storefront locations before moving to a Carnegie Library Building. In 1982 Coos Art Museum members, acquired and remodeled the old US Post Office building, a historical art deco structure built in 1937. The Museum has five active galleries totaling almost 5,000 sq feet of display space and a 540 piece Permanent Collection of mid-20th Century and contemporary American art.

35th Anniversary Women Only Photography Call for Entry

International Deadline: September 30, 2010 - To celebrate our 35th anniversary, New York's 'Professional Women Photographers' invites all women photographers - non-members and members, amateur and professional to submit entries. Jurors Elinor Carucci and Stephen Perloff will award $3000 in prizes and the Grand Prize image will appear on the cover of 'Imprints Magazine' Fall/Winter issue.

Photographs will also be exhibited at New York’s Soho Photo gallery from June 1-June 14, 2011.

AWARDS
Winners will be selected from four categories. Submissions may be made to more than one category, but an entry fee will be charged for each category entered. The categories are:

People
Places
Nature
Abstract

Selected images will be seen by an international audience of collectors, curators, art consultants and others who appreciate fine art photography.

These images, as well as 20 Jurors’ Selections, will be exhibited in a two-week group show at New York’s Soho Photo gallery from June 1 – June 14, 2011 and in on online exhibition on the PWP website for six months, November 15, 2010 – May 15, 2011. An additional 30 images selected for Honorable Mention will also be included in the PWP online Exhibition.

Grand Prize: One photographer will receive $600 and have their image on the cover of IMPRINTS Magazine 2010 Fall/Winter issue. IMPRINTS Magazine, the official publication of PWP, is published in hard copy and online editions. The image will be in the Soho Photo gallery show and the PWP online exhibition.


First Prizes: 4 photographers (one in each category) will receive $300 and their selected image will appear in the Fall/Winter issue of IMPRINTS Magazine. Their image will be in the Soho Photo gallery show and PWP online exhibition.


Second Prizes: 4 photographers (one in each category) will receive $200 and their image will appear in IMPRINTS Fall/Winter issue. Their image will be in the Soho Photo gallery show and PWP online exhibition.


Third Prizes: 4 photographers (one in each category) will receive $100 and their image will appear in the Fall/Winter issue of IMPRINTS. Their image will be exhibited in the Soho Photo gallery show and PWP online exhibition.


Jurors’ Selections: 20 additional images will be included in the New York City group exhibition and the PWP online exhibition.


Honorable Mention: 37 additional images will be included in the PWP online gallery exhibition.

ELIGIBILITY
This Call for Entries is open to all women photographers, non-members and members, amateur and professional. PWP invites women photographers working in all mediums, styles and schools of thought to participate. Experimental and mixed techniques are welcome. Only 2-D work is eligible and must be limited in Framed Size to 24 x 30 inches.

JURORS
Elinor Carucci is an internationally recognized photographer whose photographs are in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Houston Museum of Fine Art. Her work has appeared in such prestigious publications asThe New York Times Magazine, The New Yorker, Details, New York Magazine, W, Aperture, and Artnews. She has had solo exhibitions at the Edwynn Houk Gallery, Fifty One Fine Art Gallery, James Hyman Gallery and London’s Gagosian Gallery. Group shows include The Museum of Modern Art in New York and The Photographer’s Gallery in London.

In 2002, Chronicle Books published Carucci’s first monograph, Closer, which is now available in a second edition with an introduction by Susan Kismaric, Curator, Department of Photography, MoMA. Her second monograph, Diary of a Dancer was published by SteidlMack in 2005. She currently teaches photography at the graduate program of School of Visual Arts.

Stephen Perloff is the editor of The Photo Review which he founded in 1976, editor of The Photograph Collector, and editor of Focus Magazine. He has taught photography and the history of photography, and was the recipient of the Sol Mednick Award for 2000 for Photographic Education and the first annual Vanguard Award from the Philadelphia Center for the Photographic Image in 2007.

He has curated more than 20 exhibitions, including the Woodmere Art Museum Photography Triennial in 2009/2010. His photographs have appeared in numerous exhibitions and reside in many museum and private collections.

ENTRY FEE
The entry fee is $35 for the first three images. Additional images may be submitted for $10 each. The same image may be submitted to more than one category.

IMAGE PREPARATION
Prepare your images as required before beginning the submission process. Submissions are only accepted via the online process. Submissions as email attachments, on CD, or prints are not allowed in this competition and will not be returned. Digital image files must meet the following specifications: 8 bit JPEG files (CMYK and 16 bits files will not be uploaded), the largest dimension should be 1280 pixels (width or height), resolution of 72 ppi, JPG compression quality of 7 or 8. Images will be viewed by the jurors as RGB images; therefore Adobe RGB or SRGB profiles should be used.

File names may contain a maximum of 25 characters, not counting .jpg. The file name may not include characters such as #, $, &, periods or other similar characters as part of the file, and should start with your name, then your first initial, and then the name of the file. There will be only one period in the file name, just prior to the file extension (i.e. Smith_J_filename.jpg). It's important to follow these instructions about the file name to allow the right storage into the image database.

Image title may not exceed 40 characters. Please note that image title is the name of the artwork, not the file name.

ACCEPTANCE NOTIFICATION
Everyone whose image is chosen for the exhibitions will receive an email notification of the accepted image(s).

EXHIBIT PRINTS
All accepted images submitted for exhibition must be printed and framed professionally. PWP recognizes that some work is non traditional and incorporates the framing as an integral part of the presentation. To encourage participation by photographers from around the world, PWP offers optional discounted printing, matting and framing services. Specific information on these exhibition services will be sent to the selected photographers with their notification of acceptance.

SALES
All work accepted for the gallery show must be for sale. PWP will receive a 20% commission on the sale of any work.

USE RIGHTS
By submission for jurying, artists whose submissions are chosen for the exhibition grant PWP the right to use their images for the purpose of marketing the exhibition and other PWP programs. Artists grant the use of their image(s) as stated without further contact or compensation from PWP. Artist’s recognition is provided with any use.

Our juror is Kathleen Ewing, owner of Kathleen Ewing Gallery, which specializes in photography. She represents over 40 contemporary photographers and maintains an inventory of 19th and 20th century vintage photographs. She was the Executive Director of The Association of International Photography Art Dealers, from 1991 to 2007 and is also the Executive Director of the Art Dealers Association of Greater Washington.
