Barnstormers to Play for Coos Bay Contra Dance

Contra dancing is coming to Coos Bay this Saturday, December 5, at 7 o’clock.  This light-hearted form of social dancing is easy to learn, and lots of fun for the whole family.  There will be three hours of live music at the
Harding Learning Center located at 755 South 7th.  For this special event, a guest caller from Roseburg, Woody Lane, will teach every move and figure you need to know.  Woody is an experienced caller with an exciting repertoire of dances.  He will give a lesson at 7PM, and first timers who show up for this lesson will receive a ticket for free admission to their next dance.
Contra dancing in
Coos Bay is sponsored by the South Coast Folk Society.  They invite the public to enjoy a full evening of contra, circle and square dances.  Singles, couples and families are all welcome, and no partner is needed. The music for this month’s Community Contra Dance will be provided by The Eugene Barnstormers.  The Barnstormers are a perennial favorite of the local dance community.  Their infectious rhythms will make you feel like dancing all night.  They play lively old-timey music which blends seamlessly with Woody’s calling.
The Folk Society hosts Contra Dances every first Saturday at the
Harding Learning Center, and every third Saturday at the Greenacres Grange.   Both venues offer a full evening of social dancing to great live music.  These events are alcohol and fragrance free.  Refreshments are available.  Doors open at 6:45PM.  Admission: General $7, Students w/ID and Seniors over 60 $6, Members $5, and Supervised Children under 6 are free. Proposal

June 4 2016 Art In The Park

The proposal from the State Parks Department is a  two session instruction / teaching session for  anyone interested in plein air painting.  There will also be  a four scene  presentation from Shakespeare performed in the gardens at Shore Acres by local talented actors.

The park has been a favorite painting spot for the various groups of plein air painters for  over a decade.  There are three groups who sometimes overlap and have all contributed to a history of the changes in the landscape.

Stephanie Miller, Park Ranger, is coordinator for this event.  She has contacted Sally Rolicheck and I agreed to carry this forward on behalf of BAAA.

As Mr Tom Leahy says Art, Tourism and Culture are the mainstays of our economy in the Bay Area.  This type of event showcases the sense of place and community for our area.  I feel this is a very important event that needs to be supported and presented in a well organized enthusiastic way.  This will need the support of everyone who is a member of this organization.

In our initial discussion we covered time and the duration of each session.   This is a  seven hour actual time commitment am/pm on a Saturday. Stephanie Miller will speak at our January meeting about the event.

We need a group of people in the planning and execution of this event.  A group large enough to be able to cover unexpected time issues for other members of the group.  Be  a Sunset Bay Painters in the Park promoter!   Joan 541-217-8242

Sing a Song

The Country Dance and Song Society is the international group that brought us South Coast Folk Week and provides many other essential services to the South Coast Folk Society, including event insurance and education. We're happy to pass along this message they asked us to share with our members.

---
Dear South Coast Folk Society Members:
We here at CDSS would like to thank you for participating in South Coast Folk Week, the community residency in Coos Bay in October, as part of the CDSS Centennial Tour!

The Centennial Tour is a pilot program, exploring the community residency model for connecting with and supporting our members.  What we learn in 2015 will help us build our capacity to support communities in the future.  With your help, and the help of others like you, CDSS will be able to continue this program beyond our Centennial.

We were able to bring the Tour to your community because of the generosity of folks across North America who supported our "Spread the Joy" Centennial Campaign in 2013 and 2014.

Now we're asking you to help us "Pay it Forward" to future communities, so they can benefit as you have, by making a gift of any size to the "Spread the Joy" campaign. Go to
http://wordpress.us10.list-manage.com/track/click?u=727bcda7b9a3cb6201829cfc7&id=18144c2cff&e=47261c8db2 and click on the "Donate" link.

If you've already made a gift to the campaign, thanks so much!  If not, this is a wonderful time to add your support.  Regardless of how much, it is your participation that matters. While $100 for 100 years has a nice ring to it, remember that lots of small donations add up.

Thanks for all the valuable work you’re doing to support these traditions in your own community.  Let’s pay it forward for the next 100 years!

Spread the Joy!
